Exclusive: Amplify Pictures, the indie studio behind HBO’s Emmy winner 100 Foot Wave and the upcoming Legends for Nat Geo/Disney+, has greenlighted development on LA Native, a new half-hour comedy series written and created by Siena East (Clone High).
The show centers on Genoa Now, an unruly Native twentysomething in Los Angeles trying to make friends and connect with her Native American culture. Chadd Gindin, East’s collaborator on Fox’s animated series Grimsburg, will serve as showrunner and exec produce the project alongside Amplify Pictures.
“We’re in a really incredible time for Native television thanks to years of hard work by Indigenous artists who have fought for our stories to be told,” said East in a statement to Deadline. “It’s so exciting to get to develop a show close and dear to my heart. The European Film Market is off to a strong start, buoyed by post-strike optimism and a truly impressive lineup of projects on offer in Berlin this year, including available indie movies with the A-list draws of stars such as Margot Robbie, Dave Bautista, Scarlett Johansson, and Will Smith. Coming off a solid Sundance and improving box office figures, both in the U.S. and Europe, hope appears to be slowly returning to an indie film industry that seemed near the brink just six months ago.
But many EFM sellers still see a cloud over the horizon with the unresolved issue of the home entertainment market, particularly the all-important pay-one window. Ancillary revenues have always been the true driver of the indie market, but as streaming comes to dominate post-theatrical exploitation and the biggest platforms are pulling back on how much independent fare they buy, many are questioning how indie movies can make the numbers work.

Innovative methods of getting projects into production was the subject of discussion for a group of top U.S. and European producers, networks and streamers during a debate at the Avp Summit in Trieste.
The panel brought together the likes of Amplify Pictures Cco Rachel Eggebeen, Media Res International head Lars Blomgren, Cattleya Co-CEO Marco Chimenz, Nicola Serra from Palomar, Prime Video’s Davide Nardini and France Télévisions’ Head of International Scripted Series Morad Koufane, who each outlined how their operations could help projects get financed and into production.
Kicking off the session, Eggebeen talked up Amplify’s model of “enhanced acquisitions.” This means independently financing, developing and green light a project for production before selling it to a buyer, who will still be able to “have their fingerprints on it and be involved.”

Surfer Garrett McNamara, star of the HBO documentary series 100 Foot Wave, is one of the few people on the planet who can truly describe what it’s like to be chased by a massive wall of water.
“It’s just so choppy and the wind is just going by your face and your whole body,” McNamara said during a panel discussion of 100 Foot Wave as part of Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted event. “As you’re coming down [the wave], you’re looking to see if it’s going to keep you from behind or if there’s an exit, if you can make it or should you go deeper or run to the shoulder or try to pull into the barrel. Topic Studios president Maria Zuckerman is a canny executive who can see over the horizon. In 2019, the New Yorker figured out that the Hollywood universe was expanding at such a rate that it was time to become a bicoastal content provider instead of a distributor-buyer. She left producing at HBO, where she had been happily ensconced for almost 20 years, and moved over to independent Topic Studios. She quickly saw a route to diversifying and expanding the company’s lineup, by backing, funding, and producing (at different levels) a wide range of independent features, building on the Oscar-winning “Spotlight” toward this past weekend’s opener, Pablo Larraín’s surreal Princess Diana drama “Spencer” (Neon), starring Oscar frontrunner Kristen Stewart.
“It’s a fiercely independent company,” Zuckerman said in an interview with IndieWire. That’s because owner First Look Media (Oscar-winning “Spotlight”) created a two-sided entity: the not-for-profit and the studio. “Our mission is to be profitable,...

“1917” has won the Producers Guild of America’s award as the best-produced feature film of 2019, giving it an important victory at an awards show that usually honors the film that goes on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
The film, an immersive drama about World War I that was fashioned to look like a single shot, triumphed in a field that also included top Academy Award contenders “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” “The Irishman,” “Parasite” and “Joker.” While the PGA win makes it a de facto frontrunner of sorts in that race, this is a year in which the Oscar race still feels unsettled.
“Apollo 11” won the award for documentary feature, while “Toy Story 4” won for animated feature.

The last two Producers Guild of America Awards told us which movies — “Green Book” (2019) and “The Shape of Water” (2018) — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact, 21 of the previous PGA Awards winners have then gone on to claim Best Picture victories.
For the 31st annual ceremony slated for Saturday, January 18 at the Hollywood Palladium, we already know the top choice will be at the very least a major front-runner for this year’s Oscar. The PGA’s 10 nominated films are “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Knives Out,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story,” “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite.” All but “Knives Out” contend at the Oscars for Best Picture.

In the aftermath of sexual harassment allegations against former Amazon Studios head Roy Price, Amazon Studios continues to jettison planned publicity opportunities. Vanished from the schedule of Saturday’s Producers Guild of America conference “Produced By: New York” is “360 Profile: Amazon Studios,” which was to feature the company’s Head of Motion Picture Production, Ted Hope, and Joe Lewis, the now-former Head of Comedy, Drama, and Vr.
The PGA announced the panel September 14 as part of its conference programming. By October 22, Lewis was still a top Amazon executive — but the panel was no longer part of the schedule. (Variety confirmed his departure Oct. 23; the next day, Amazon’s head of unscripted programming, Conrad Riggs, also left the company).
This comes at what should be a key moment for Amazon, which is now launching its in-house distribution arm with Woody Allen’s “Wonder Wheel.” Amazon representatives declined to confirm the cancellation by press time.

Conrad Riggs, the exec who oversaw the growth of Amazon’s unscripted programming, has left the company. He’s the latest high-level exec to depart Amazon Studios in recent days as the behemoth looks to reorganize its streaming service.
Riggs’ departure comes a day after Joe Lewis, who was head of half hour and drama series development, left the company. Earlier this month, head of international productions Morgan Wandell exited to join Apple in a new gig. Following Lewis’ departure, Sharon Tal Yguado, who joined Amazon in January as head of event series, was given oversight over all of Amazon’s scripted programming.
The reshuffle comes as Amazon Studios undergoes a massive overhaul following the departure of head Roy Price, who was the architect of Amazon Prime’s programming strategy. Incorporated was quietly canceled on Syfy today.
The series about a future run by corporations giving them unlimited power and a man from a poor background (Sean Teale) who infiltrated their world in an attempt to save his childhood love.
Incorporated was pulling in about 500k viewers per week, well below series such as The Magicians and The Expanse.
Syfy has other series on tap, including Krypton and The Haunted and recently ordered two more seasons of its incredible horror anthology series Channel Zero.
If you've been waiting for CBS All Access' Star Trek: Discovery, prepare to wait a bit longer.
CBS Chief Les Moonves was at a business conference when he shared the news the upcoming Star Trek series would fly "sometime late summer early fall...probably."
Of course, it's not the first time we've been given a timeline for the new series, but perhaps this will the winner.

Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s novel Good Omens is finally going to get its long-awaited adaptation. At one point Terry Gilliam was supposed to direct a film based on the story with Robin Williams and Johnny Depp starring in it, but it never happened.
Amazon Studios has now picked it up, and they will develop it as a limited 6-part comedy series with each episode being an hour long. Gaiman is set to write the entire series, and he's also going to be the showrunner, so fans are going to get the purest adaptation possible. If you're not familiar with the story, here's the description:
Good Omens takes place in 2018 when the Apocalypse is near and Final Judgment is set to descend upon humanity. According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter Witch (the world’s only completely accurate book of prophecies), the world will end on a Saturday.

Amazon announced on Tuesday that it has renewed The Man in the High Castle for a third season — and with a showrunner at the helm, to boot.
After Frank Spotnitz abruptly stepped down as showrunner midway through production of Season 2, the dystopian thriller proceeded without a singular boss, operating instead like “a republic,” it was explained at the summer TCA press tour. “We have a system that is working as good as we can make it,” said Ep David Zucker.
For Season 3, however, Bosch executive producer Eric Overmyer will assume the top post.
