How Sarfarosh changed the patriotic film for good. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Not all patriotic movies mentioned the enemy nation by name. It was all about a ‘dushmun desh’ with junior artistes with oriental features and actors made to resemble them, for China (to whom we lost in 1962) was the major enemy! Pakistan as an enemy was rare.
All that changed after Border in 1997, which was a dramatized version of the Longowal battle in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Obviously, Pakistan had to be named and shown here. But Sarfarosh, released in 1999, was the first fictional drama to show our neighboring country openly as the ‘villain’ waging proxy wars. Eerily, the Kargil conflict happened within weeks of its release. And despite our then-Prime Minister’s friendly overtures to them, our recalcitrant neighbour continues to foster terror and express that they want Kashmir!

Box Office – Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kriti Sanon’s Crew is amongst Top-10 female centric films after Week One ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Crew continues to be in the record books after spending one week in theatres. It had a really good opening when it started in double digits, and then that stayed on to be the case for rest of the weekend as well when more than 10 crores kept coming in. Though Monday hold was quite good, there were steady numbers that kept coming between Tuesday to Thursday. That said, the drops were there and while they were not drastic, they were negligible. As a result, the Crew has to now contend with being in the Top-10 instead of being in the top 5.
Here Are the Week One/first 7 day numbers of the Top-10 Female-Centric Films: The Kerala Story – 81.07 crores Gangubai Kathiawadi – 68.93 crores Manikarnika – The Queen of Jhansi – 61.15 crores Veere Di Wedding...

Sam Bahadur & Animal Box Office Day 1 Set The Highest Cumulative Record To Be Broken By Dunki Vs Salaar!(Photo Credit –Instagram/Facebook/IMDb)
Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal have started the last month of this year at an all-time high. While Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s gangster drama has registered a box office collection of 65 crore (in all languages), and Meghna Gulzar’s war drama has registered 7.25 crore in India. Collectively, both films have registered a cumulative collection of 72.25 crore.
Interestingly, this number is still less than the highest grosser of the year – Jawan, which has claimed the top spot with 75 crore. However, Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal, along with their films, have set a record that will be a difficult one to break. Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki and Prabhas’ Salaar are next in line to clash at the box office.

Vicky Kaushal- Led Sam Bahadur’s Box Office Update! (Photo Credit –Instagram)
When Sam Bahadur decided to release this Friday, it was a given that the film would primarily be relying on word of mouth to do the trick. Regardless of whether it was arriving amidst completion from Animal or solo, this one was always going to be a long-term affair rather than just a weekend juggernaut. After all, Meghna Gulzar’s last film with Vicky Kaushal, Raazi, too, had started with 7.53 crores and then went on to score a huge century.
Sam Bahadur has opened lower than Raazi and brought in 6.25 crores. Of course, there will always be theories that the clash ended up reducing the footfalls. However, the fact also remains that due to this clash, there was also huge publicity that came in which also resulted in added awareness. So in a way, everything evens out...

Plenty of war films made in the Hindi language always cater to the jingoistic narrative. Most of them would include a plot that involves sheer hatred for a certain neighboring nation. Though the enmity between the two nations was at its peak during all the major wars, the filmmakers approached this subject matter by emphasizing nationalistic tropes and refusing to dial down the noise. They also do not focus enough on screenplay, direction, or other technical aspects.
Raazi, Border, Shershaah, Lakshya, and Uri: The Surgical Strike are a handful of films that did justice to war drama as a genre. Pippa belongs to the same category as well. This period war drama directed by Raja Krishna Menon was released straight on Amazon Prime Video on November 10, 2023, and is based on the book The Burning Chaffees: A Soldier’s First-Hand Account of the 1971 War by Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta.

The highly anticipated crossover between Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan’s respective spy characters, Tiger and Pathaan, has been shelved for now.
The news comes as a disappointment to fans who had been eagerly awaiting the film, which was expected to be one of the biggest blockbusters in Bollywood history.
Pathaan Theme
According to a source close to Srk, the project was scrapped due to its massive budget. “This was more a case of wishful thinking than a real project,” the source said. “Bringing Shah Rukh’s Pathaan and Salman’s Tiger together was just a pie in the sky, nowhere close to the storyboard. The project is financially impractical.”
In other news, Alia Bhatt is reportedly set to join the Yrf Spy Universe. Bhatt will reportedly play a “super agent” in the 8th film in the franchise, produced by Aditya Chopra.

Mumbai, March 5: Filmmaker Alankrita Shrivastava, whose web series Bombay Begums will soon be streamed, says that making women-oriented films is not easy in Bollywood. Right from shooting to distribution, it is tough to get the appropriate budgets and provisions.
"Budget problems are not specific to me and my films. It is the same story for all female filmmakers. If you want to make films with women who are not big stars, it is a problem. Even with big stars - Meghna (Gulzar) made Raazi (with Alia Bhatt) - she had to shoot within limited budget and had to shoot for long hours," informs Alankrita.
The filmmaker who made a mark directing Lipstick Under My Burkha in 2017, adds that this is because women-centric films don't get distribution. "The budget is justified through the exhibition and distribution system. These distributors feel that these films cannot make that much money," she says.

ReviewThe film makes you uncomfortable and emotional without obnoxious jingoism that’s common in army films.Geetika MantriScreengrab/Netflix In an ideal world, anyone can aspire to be anything. Some progressive families try to treat their children equally, irrespective of gender. But the world, more often than not, does not agree. A child, who was told she could soar, finds herself in a predicament when she learns that the society around her doesn’t think so. She fights back, but she is no superwoman – how many times must she prove herself despite being able? Many women would relate to this story. In a society that defines roles for us almost from the minute we are born, the struggle to swim against the tide can be difficult, exhausting and continuing forever. And the Janhvi Kapoor-starrer Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl does an efficient job of showing that without unnecessary angst or chest-thumping.

This year, the motion picture academy achieved its five-year goal of doubling the number of women among its membership. In all, 819 film professionals were invited to become part of the organization that hands out the Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous five years: 842 in 2019; a record 928 in 2018; 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.
While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.
For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.

It’s been a year of change for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which has responded not only to the pandemic, pushing back the global ABC Oscars telecast from February 28 to April 25, 2021 — setting a new award season calendar as other award shows have followed suit — but the urgency of the Black Lives Matter movement.
In its continuing push to swell the Academy membership ranks, 819 artists and executives from 68 countries have been invited to join this year. The branches have increasingly actively sought eligible people to become Academy members, but the Board of Governors makes the final call. People from underrepresented ethnic/racial communities (36 percent) and women (45 percent) are among the many invites, as the Academy continues to address its long-term white-male dominance. As always, actors make up the largest branch of the Academy, but many new members (49 percent) also come from overseas.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 819 artists and executives to join the organization in 2020.
In doing so, the Academy continues its work on diversifying its ranks. If all 819 invitees accept their invitations, 45% of the new members will be women and 36% are from underrepresented ethnic/racial communities. International make-up is 49% from 68 countries.
“The Academy is delighted to welcome these distinguished fellow travelers in the motion picture arts and sciences. We have always embraced extraordinary talent that reflects the rich variety of our global film community, and never more so than now,” said Academy president David Rubin said in a statement.
In 2016, as part of its A2020 initiative, the Academy promised to at least double the number of women and underrepresented ethnic/racial communities by this year. “Through dedicated and intentional work by the Board of Governors and members on the branch executive committees, the Academy has surpassed both these goals,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has released its annual list of invitations to join the organization, and surveying the new class of Oscar voters it is clear they are aiming in a big way to continue erasing the stigma of not being inclusive, particularly in terms of women, international members and underrepresented ethnic/racial communities. The org still says they have a long way to go, but the label of being a white man’s club is fading more with each year’s list of new members. The number this year does not represent a record but is closely in line with the 842 invited last year.
The org touts that its 2020 invitees are 49% international, 45% women, and 36% underrepresented ethnic/racial. Sixty-eight countries are repped on the list that includes such actors as Roma best actress nominee Yalitza Aparicio, Awkwafina, Zendaya Coleman, Harriet double nominee Cynthia Erivo, Eva Longoria, John David Washington,...

Chhapaak
Starring Deepika Padukone, Vikrant Massey,
Directed by Meghna Gulzar
What a splash Meghna Gulzar makes with Chhapaak! This sensitive stunning film about a real-life acid-attack victim’s attempt to rebuild her life as surgeons try to put together her shattered face, could easily have vacillated between cringe-inducing melodrama and unrealistic optimism. In this gut-wrenching masterpiece she has co-scripted with Atika Chohan, Meghna Gulzar allows herself no easy exits.
The fluent and virile narration (editor Nitin Baid does a splendid job of re-constructing the saga of the protagonist’s shattered life) drags us into the protagonist Malti’s fight to win justice against her attacker and dares us to leave her to her own devices.
This, I am happy to say, is impossible to do. Chhapaak persuades us with gentle hands to remain invested in Malti’s battle as she and her lawyer (an incredible career-making performance by Madhurjeet Sarghi...

Noted director Meghna Gulzar of critically acclaimed films like Talvar and Raazi has turned her focus to a new tale. Starring Deepika Padukone, Chhapaak is a film that looks at acid violence through the lens of the real life story of Acid survivor Laxmi Agarwal.
To set the stage here is the trailer
In Chhapaak, Deepika plays Malti, a young girl who comes from a humble, unprivileged background. Malti was attacked with acid on a street in New Delhi, in 2005. Her assailant was a man twice her age, whose advances Malti had clearly declined. Through Malti’s story, the film makes an attempt to understand the on-ground consequences of surviving an acid attack in India, the medico-legal social state of affairs that transpire after the acid has been hurled and the face is irreparably burnt.
Meghna Gulzar talked with Stacey about making Chhapaak, the experience of working with Deepika Padukone and so much more.

Deepika is playing the role of Malti, an acid attack survivor, a character that was reportedly inspired by Laxmi Agarwal, acid attack survivor and activist. Directed by Meghna Gulzar of Raazi fame, the trailer shows how the film will go through Malti’s journey – from the horror of seeing her reflection in the mirror for the first time after the acid attack, to picking herself back up, and taking the battle against acid attacks to the court - much like Laxmi, whose petition with 27,000 signatures led the Supreme Court to direct Union and state governments to regulate acid sale in 2013. The trailer also hints that the film may attempt to address other issues that victims of gender-based violence face such as victim shaming,...

5 unlikely heroes, 4 days and India’s Osama… this is the synopsis in the trailer of India’s Most Wanted: a story based on true events of how an unlikely team of officers were able to track down and capture the most feared terrorist of the modern age on Indian shores. This is patriotism and humanity too; this is blind faith in the name of the flag and the human singular determination to put an end to evil. While the emotions are easy to build, its surprisingly difficult to put to music as it needs the perfect combination of lyrics and music to stir the hearts and remain in the minds., Amit Trivedi and Amitabh Bhattacharya must have had a lot of work ahead of them when crafting this album.

There's a thin line that divides patriotism from jingoism. But as Bollywood is riding on a high tide of films with nationalistic themes, actor John Abraham, who plays a spy in thriller "Raw", says it's totally worth it to have a stream of movies on what people need to see in the current socio-political environment. "Patriotism is something that you must feel in your heart, and you project it in a certain sensitive, credible, sensible and responsible way in your storytelling. Jingoism is when you wear that on your sleeve. I think there may be some films that may go over the top in trying to be opportunistic, but if there is a wave of films that do address what the country needs to see at this point of time, I feel it's absolutely worth it," John told Ians over phone from London.

A Bollywood movie about a rapper from the slums may sound derivative, but what does that matter when “Gully Boy” revels in high-wattage screen chemistry and an inclusive social message, all served up in a slickly enjoyable production showcasing Ranveer Singh’s many charms? Zoya Akhtar’s most accomplished film to date is a mainstream rap musical about a Muslim guy from working-class Mumbai determined to break free from the strictures of expectation and class, all served up with generous helpings of deftly written hip-hop lyrics and a largely well-woven narrative that’s so likable one can almost forgive how the script barely bothers to resolve an important plot element.
Even though few Bollywood films break through into non-specialized distribution, this one has a better chance than most to become an international crowdpleaser, polishing and semi-pop-ifying the gritty genre for a broader audience as it does. It doesn’t hurt...

India’s leading film festival struck several controversial films from its lineup to make room for female-directed features and address a mood of change. But will it halt harassment on set?
Introducing the recent series opener of India’s top-rated talk show, Koffee With Karan, the director-producer-personality Karan Johar championed Bollywood’s new-found “girl power”: 12 months of successes – such as the taut spy thriller Raazi and the raucous bridal comedy Veere di Wedding – that were led and authored by women. His guests, accordingly, were distaff royalty: reigning queen Deepika Padukone, newly radiant after surviving January’s trial-by-fire film Padmaavat, and beaming princess Alia Bhatt, Raazi’s immensely talented young lead. There is a sense of drama mixed with pride which makes these films popular with audiences. Raazi is the latest in this line released on the 11th of May to worldwide audiences. Headlined by those behind the scenes namely its director Megna Gulzar and producers Dharma productions and Junglee productions who made the movie good even before the release, the film stars Alia Bhatt and Vicky Khausal.
