In the near future, Vivica A. The Lashman
Written and Directed by Cameron McCasland
Starring Stacey Dixon, Shawn C. Phillips, David Vaughn, Jeremy Jones, and Kaylee Williams
The Lashman has been making it's Festival run for a bit now, and has been getting some love. I will start by saying I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but I know that the slasher film is my favorite sub-genre of horror, so I was excited to get a chance to check it out.
What McCasland, and Co., have constructed here is every bit a love letter to a specific time period in horror history. Films such as “The Town that Dreaded Sundown”, “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, and “Friday the 13th” all came to mind, while viewing the movie. I have to admit here and now that this is not my favorite time period for horror. So to say that I...

Hello Maiara,
First let me start by saying thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions, and that I really was impressed by your performance in VANish (review). I thought it was absolutely great.
Maiara Walsh (Mw): Well first of all, thank you! I’m glad that you enjoyed it, it was, as Bryan Bockbrader would say, “one hell of a ride”.
I've got a questions pertaining to both you, as an actress, and to the film itself, so I will try to alternate them for the most part. My first question is for you, and really, I'm always curious what leads anyone to get into this industry. I know I have a story. Everyone I know has a story, whether they Direct, act, work Craft services, etc. So what lead you to want to be an actress?
Mw: Ah stories,...

On to Werewolf Weekend movie #2, Dark Sky Films release Late Phases. I hadn't received a dud from this company, for review yet, and Phases keeps that going. Written by Eric Stolze, and Directed by Adrian Garcia Bogliano, Late Phases tells the story of an Army Vet, Ambrose, who has went blind with time, after being injured in Vietnam. He has become hardened to life, and in his own way, looks forward to death. His son puts him in a retirement community, thinking it's best for everyone involved, until Ambrose realizes there's something very dark hiding in the community.
I'm going to start with what I didn't like, this time. There were a couple sparse sound design issues. This is something that's hard to pin point where the problem originated at, because so much work goes into it. Suffice it to say that,...

WolfCop (2014)
Written and directed by Lowell Dean (13 Eerie) and starring Leo Fafard (Corner Gas: The Movie), Amy Matysio (Lawrence & Holloman), Jonathan Cherry (Final Destination 2), Aidan Devine (Outlander) and Sarah Lind (Severed).
This weekend has been dubbed “Werewolf Weekend”, as I have not one, but two movies to review, that just both happen to be werewolves. I wasn't sure what to expect, when I was asked if I wanted to review WolfCop. Any werewolf movie immediately has my attention, but this just had 'cheesy schlock film' written all over it. It just raised a whole lot of questions in my mind, and I wasn't certain I'd be able to give it a good review, let alone finish the thing.
However, WolfCop is a perfect example of why you shouldn't judge too harshly, before giving something a chance. Was it cheesy? Absolutely. Was it schlocky?...

I had heard mixed things about As Above So Below, prior to checking it out. Some people said it was a great horror film, while others said it was simply another by-the-numbers entry. I have to say, after sitting down to view it, both were right, for different reasons.
I'm not a fan of found footage. I never have been. In fact, the only movie I really appreciate done in this format was the very first “Paranormal Activity”. Outside of that, the whole gimmick wore out it's welcome very quickly. So when the trailers for “As Above...” started rolling out, I was unimpressed. But, a couple people said that it was great, besides the found footage aspect, so I bought it. And there is a lot of great things about the movie.
The acting stands out, as probably the best part of the entire film.

I wasn't sure what to expect, putting this film in. Seth, the gent who runs MoreHorror, simply asked, “would you like to review Starry Eyes?” – what he really asked was, “would you like a free movie?” – of course, I'm going to say “yes”. So, today there's a knock at the door, and an envelope sitting on my deck, and this evening, I pop it in.
And this is just terrible. Terrible, I tell you. Terrible that I had to wait until 2015, to see one of the best films of 2014. No, not one of the best horror films. One of the best films. Now, I'm a man who loves his mainstream films, so when you ask what my favorites of 2014 were, movies like “Guardians of the Galaxy”, “Gone Girl”, and “The Winter Soldier” are going to be at the top. “Starry Eyes” has easily made...

Let me start by saying that when Tusk first came out, there wasn't a theater within an hour, and forty-five minutes, from me, showing it. As a huge Kevin Smith fan, this was disheartening. Every time I planned to drive, to see it, something came up. I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to catch it until it came out on DVD/VOD. Then a stroke of luck, and our little local indie theater, Cinema Center, got it for Halloween weekend. Score.
Going in, I had high hopes, but had become worried, as I saw the negativity rolled out. It wasn't until at some point watching the movie, that I remembered this is Kevin Smith we're talking about, and “haters gonna hate.” – mainly because this movie was pretty damn awesome.

When I first heard about Zack Parker, being from Indiana, myself, my first thought was, “No way! Someone in Indiana makes movies for more than five grand!? And they don't sneak into locations, to do it? Get out of town!” – Because while the people of Indiana are very film-friendly, the state Government is not so welcoming.
So to hear someone goes out of their way to film in-state when they have a budget that means they don't have too, it was kind of shocking. All this said, I immediately sought out Zack's work, starting with Scalene. I must admit that I wasn't a fan. Not for a lack of quality, or anything particularly wrong with the work. Calm down. It simply wasn't this cat's meow. This happens, sometimes.

What do you get when you cross bio-engineering, strippers, deadly fish, gold-flake cinnamon drank, and lovable losers? You get awesome, is what you get. This particular serving of awesome is called 'Piranha Sharks', and it comes to you from the mind of one Leigh Scott. Sigh. Yes, 'Transmorphers' Leigh Scott. No, this is not 'Transmorphers'. Relax.
Piranha Sharks are bio-engineered creatures, that are repackaged, and targeted towards kids, as the year's hot new Christmas item. However, when the animals make their way into the New York water system, it falls on Jackson (Collin Galyean), and his pest-killing buddies (John Wells, and Josh Hammond) to get rid of them, before they destroy the city.
The writing works first, to set this film apart. It takes a shot at many of the cheesy indie cliches, with hilarious class, and accuracy.

Possible spoilers ahead. *Seriously, don't read, if you haven't seen the movie*
When I first heard about Jen and Sylvia Soska (re: Soska Twins/The Soskas), I admit I had never seen their work. I had zero idea about who they were, or how they had come to Indie Horror prominence, yet once I started hearing their names, it became almost a daily occurrence.
Something about this concerned me, though, because the first thing I heard about them was, “Have you seen 'American Mary'? They're awesome for female Directors! Their stuff can lean a bit extreme feminist at times, but, they're not bad, at all!” – and that didn't quite sit well, with me. The way their work was described was almost 'man-hating', and for obvious reasons, I found myself hesitant to seek out their work.
