ITV, the UK commercial broadcaster behind global hits like Downton Abbey and Midsomer Murders, has revealed that it is casting actors from diverse backgrounds in more than a quarter of lead roles in its drama series.
ITV published the figure in its Diversity Acceleration Plan report, which provides a health check on diversity and inclusion commitments made by the broadcaster in July last year, at the height of the Black Lives Matter movement.
ITV said 26% of the available 2,886 lead roles in its dramas were filled by Black, Asian, and minority ethnic talent between July 2020 and April 2021. That’s a 33% increase on the same 10-month period to April 2020, when 572, or 21%, of 2,731 headline roles went to diverse talent.
As an example of progress, the broadcaster pointed to the casting of Tala Gouveia in Mammoth Screen’s crime series McDonald & Dodds. Gouveia has previously told The Guardian that it “means a lot...

(L-r) Samantha Collins, Jessie Mangum and Laura Scrivano.
While she was studying at the UK’s National Film and Television School six years ago, Australian-British screenwriter Samantha Collins wrote a screenplay about an Australian woman who goes to London in search of her missing sister.
Collins began developing the psychological drama a couple of years ago with another UK-based Aussie expat, producer Jessie Mangum.
Both women admired the works of London-based Italian-Australian filmmaker Laura Scrivano, particularly her short film Alice which starred Sarah Snook, and invited her to join the project.
Now entitled My Sister Ellie, it’s among 13 projects selected for Attagirl, the feature film development lab for female and non-binary creative teams.
Collins’ screenplay follows an Australian woman who abandons her life for a British winter, determined to bring home her pregnant sister, the surrogate of her unborn child. Clutching at clues trailing from London to the Kent coast,...

It’s pretty obvious by now that I am a fan of this man and his crew… I always look forward to seeing what he has cooked up in his labyrinthian mind and knowing that this time he had a well known studio (Goldfinch and Lionsgate) and some pretty big names onboard I was somewhat excited to check out G-loc… Oh and did I mention we were treading on some straight up sci-fi territory this time! of course I say straight up but when has Paton ever let his movies be confined to just one genre.
Of course this time we have what looks to be more of a tastier budget than we are used to and with that comes some bigger names and...

Exclusive: ITV has commissioned an extended second season of its odd-couple detective series McDonald & Dodds, starring Jason Watkins (The Crown) and Tala Gouveia (Cold Feet).
Mammoth Screen, the producer behind the upcoming BBC/Netflix series The Serpent, will produce another three feature-length episodes of ITV’s crime-of-the-week murder mystery drama. The first season, watched by 6.4M people, was just two episodes long.

The three new episodes will be directed by Alex Pillai (Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina), Rebecca Rycroft (Malory Towers) and Ian Aryeh (In The Long Run).

"Someone is trying to sabotage the mission." Lionsgate has released a trailer for an epic sci-fi thriller titled G-Loc, one of the latest films from genre filmmaker Tom Paton. The title G-Loc is a reference to an actual aerospace physiology term: "G-force induced Loss of Consciousness - a loss of consciousness occurring from excessive and sustained g-forces." This is sort of in the plot - they try to save a ship being pulled by gravity into a planet. In a world on the brink of collapse, mass migration to neighboring planet, Rhea, is humanity's final hope for survival. The only problem is, Rhea has become intolerant towards new settlers. 'Earther', Bran, has big dreams of a better life in this new world, but the odds are stacked against him. Confronted with a dangerous journey in a damaged spaceship, Bran must face an even greater threat: a hostile planet. G-Loc stars Stephen Moyer,...

Exclusive: ITV is hunting down a new detective franchise in Invisible starring The Crown’s Jason Watkins and Cold Feet’s Tala Gouveia.
The British commercial broadcaster has ordered two feature-length films from Victoria and Poldark producer Mammoth Screen. Invisible is written by Robert Murphy, the lead writer on Left Bank’s long-running detective series Dci Banks.
Set in Bath, Watkins, who is playing former British Prime Minister Harold Wilson in season three of The Crown, plays the shy, modest DS Dodds, who is paired with the wildly ambitious Dci McDonald, played by Gouveia.
While McDonald has transferred from the mean streets of South London to leap up the career ladder, Dodds has happily languished on the shelf for most of his working life. McDonald is a tough, driven, battering ram of a cop who cracks cases through sheer force of will and Dodds is quiet, unassuming and enigmatic. But...
