Alisha Elenz and Kaleena Bliss were eliminated from “Top Chef” last week in “The Wright Way,” leaving 10 cheftestants on the main show (and two in “Last Chance Kitchen“) competing for a chance to win a feature in Food and Wine magazine; an appearance at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado; and $250,000 in prize money: Manny Barella, Kevin D’Andrea, Danny Garcia, Dan Jacobs, Savannah Miller, Laura Ozyilmaz, Charly Pierre, Amanda Turner, Rasika Venkatesa and Michelle Wallace.

At last week’s A Day of Unreasonable Conversation held at The Getty Center, entertainment industry members heard from Hollywood and government leaders with varying cultural perspectives.
Jill Biden and Halle Berry at A Day of Unreasonable Conversation
Through thought-provoking discussions, impactful performances, and, at times, emotional conversations, A Day of Unreasonable Conversation surfaced new perspectives on today’s most complex topics to an audience of television writers, showrunners, and executives. Speakers were vulnerable in sharing stories that often do not get heard and urged the audience of TV creators to incorporate these experiences into their work.
First Lady Jill Biden and Halle Berry candidly discussed formerly taboo women’s health topics such as menopause, emphasizing the need for a new approach to women’s health research. Berry shared a personal story about how she realized that she was going through perimenopause, bringing forth blushes and laughter from the audience.

If you think about it, there’s no better place to premiere “Black Twitter: A People’s History” than at South by Southwest.
The three-part Hulu and Onyx docuseries based on Jason Parham’s similarly titled “Wired” story exists at the perfect intersection of entertainment, internet, and culture — just like SXSW itself.
“When I read the article, it was not only was only something that I love, that I participated in, but I saw the power of it,” director Prentice Penny told IndieWire during the conference. “It was sort of feeling like the way my mother talks about the Civil Rights Movement. That’s what I felt like was happening on Black Twitter.”
Along with being an active platform-formerly-known-as-Twitter user, Penny (whose profile welcomes users with the subhed “Fux Yo Blue Check”) was itching to do something different after “Insecure” — something that scared him.

Prentice Penny had just wrapped the fifth and final season of Issa Rae’s Insecure and was awaiting its release on HBO when Wired senior writer Jason Parham published his definitive “A People’s History of Black Twitter” in July 2021. The three-part, 9,821-word series chronicles the evolution of the nebulous and influential collective of Black users on the platform now known as X, from an inciting event (the hashtag #UKnowUrBlackWhen) to its growing influence and respective backlash through the present.
For Penny, a multihyphenate talent whose work on such series as Insecure and Girlfriends had been elevated and celebrated by Black Twitter, adapting Parham’s articles into a colorful visual history through the documentary medium seemed like an exciting new challenge after spending much of his two decades in TV predominantly in the narrative comedy space with shows including Scrubs, Happy Endings and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Martha Stewart didn’t talk to CNN for a new original documentary series the news outlet has produced about her. But she’s still the star of the show.
“The Many Lives of Martha Stewart” is a four-part series produced by CNN Studios, a division devoted to longer-form and enterprise programming in the wake of a strategic decision made in 2022 to scale back big ambitions to compete in the documentary arena. Under previous leader Jeff Zucker, CNN extended its aegis to the world of film festivals and documentary series led by notables such as Anthony Bourdain, Lisa Ling and W. Kamau Bell.
A good chunk of that work was scrapped after Warner Bros. Discovery, a big player in the world of cost-conscious reality programming, took over CNN, and installed a leader, Chris Licht, who had a mandate to pare operations. Months later, CNN would win an Oscar for a documentary...

John Legend is no stranger to documentaries. Last month, he and his Get Lifted Films’ co-founders Mike Jackson and Ty Stiklorius announced that they would serve as executive producers on Oscar-nominated Waad Al-Kateab’s latest docu “We Dare to Dream.”
This month, Legend is behind HBO Documentary Films’ “Stand Up & Shout: Songs From a Philly High School.” About an annual music program in the city’s Hill-Freedman World Academy, the 54-minute docu features 10th-grade students learning to write, compose, produce, and perform original songs. Together with local musicians, the students pitch concepts, work out arrangements, and eventually create an album that captures the challenges they are living through and the joy music brings to their respective lives.
Director Amy Schatz spent one school year following a group of students from the program as they came up with song ideas, went through the recording process, and release their collaborative album.

Bill Cosby is a free man, but now the disgraced comic actor is facing yet another civil suit alleging sexual battery.
A New Mexico woman claims Cosby drugged and raped her when she was working as a waitress at a Bay Area restaurant more than 50 years ago.
In an 11-page complaint filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court (read it here), Donna Motsinger said she met the comic actor in 1972 at The Trident in Sausalito, north of San Francisco, where Cosby was a “regular.” The suit alleges that he followed Motsinger to hear home in nearby Mill Valley and invited her to his stand-up show at Circle Star Theater in San Carlos, where he was to record what became the LP Inside the Mind of Bill Cosby.
According to the lawsuit: “Mr. Cosby picked Ms. Motsinger up in a limousine from her house and drove her to the Circle Star Theater.

Anaïs Demoustier, the French actor known for her roles in films “Smoking Causes Coughing” and “Anaïs in Love,” has been announced as president of this year’s Caméra d’or Jury at Cannes. The Caméra d’Or award is given to the best debut feature film in the Official Selection and aims to inspire young filmmakers to continue in their creative endeavors.
“Among my greatest joys as a spectator is seeing the debut film of a director who goes on to become a major force. A gesture, the first one, one that forever anchors the necessity of a director and creates a desire to see him or her begin again,” said Demoustier.
“As an actress, I’ve been lucky to experience alongside young directors the delicate balance between nervous energy and a desire to see through their first creation. I am very honoured and looking forward to discovering debut films...

Twitter has begun a wide-scale process of removing the blue check marks from verified account holders, a large swath of the platform’s most high-profile users including journalists, celebrities and even Pope Francis.
Elon Musk, who acquired Twitter last fall for $44 billion, had indicated April 20 would be the date when the long-planned revamp of the blue check system would take effect. In what he has characterized as an effort to level the playing field among all users, Musk has phased in an $8 monthly fee for blue check marks, which used to be assigned at no charge to account holders who were verified through an opaque internal process. With Musk-era Twitter starved for revenue and several times smaller in terms of its workforce than it was before, the shift makes sense to a degree but also marks a milestone in the company’s history.

“It’s not being less of one culture, it’s having the opportunity to have a deeper connection to more cultures,” says one of the multiracial young people featured in the trailer for HBO’s upcoming documentary 1000% Me: Growing Up Mixed.
The film, directed and executive produced by W. Kamau Bell, sees the Emmy-winning host and comedian sitting down with a number of San Francisco Bay Area families. Piano-playing comedian and political satirist Mark Russell died Thursday at the age of 90, his wife Ali Russell said.
For more than 50 years, Russell took shots at all sectors of the political spectrum with stand-up monologues and song parodies. He was best known for his PBS specials, which he taped six times a year from 1975 to 2004. His routines, which he sang and performed on piano, covered the latest political news with timely lyrical updates of classic songs.
Russell was a member of the National Comedy Center Advisory Board, and was remembered by fellow member Jon Stewart, who said, “Mark Russell was a DC institution who did the hardest thing a comic can do… relentlessly and righteously mock his neighbors.”
