An Australian politician has blasted The ABC for spending too much money on the latest series from the Chaser team. Coalition senator Eric Abetz said that the television station should set an example to the public by saving money in the current economic climate rather than paying a rumoured $$1.2 million (£767,000) for the controversial comedy group's new TV show The Hamster Wheel. Abetz told the Herald Sun: "They are seeing a taxpayer-funded service going on a taxpayer-funded frolic at a time when everyone else is tightening their belts." Chaser member Julian Morrow, however, has defended the series, saying: "It is important for the committee to understand that as independent producers we bring projects to the ABC because we believe in public broadcasting and the programme-making values that go with [it]."
