Hallmark has revealed that it will have 40 all-new, original movies for both its flagship channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, as well as special content for Hallmark Movies Now, the company’s subscription streaming service.
Even though the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes impacted TV and film productions, Hallmark anticipated the labor dispute by getting a head start on production in Canada. “Christmas is a year-round business at Hallmark, so we were able to mitigate early in the year understanding that the strikes were unfortunately imminent,” Lisa Hamilton Daly, EVP of programming at Hallmark Media, was recently quoted as saying. “We’re grateful to meet all our goals for a full, all-new holiday slate and to bring our viewers the content they love most to celebrate the season.”

Last week, Lea Michele made her much-ballyhooed debut in Funny Girl. It’s an understatement to say the casting of the former Glee star was not without controversy: although Michele had long been considered an obvious choice for Fanny Brice in the revival, having publicly campaigned for the role for more than a decade, Booksmart star Beanie Feldstein was cast instead. Initially, many Broadway insiders speculated the casting decisions stemmed from producers’ reluctance to work with Michele, following 2020 allegations from her costars that she had engaged in bullying and racist behavior on-set.

Olympic gymnast Simone Biles pulled out of the women's team finals at the Tokyo Games Tuesday morning, paving the way for the Russian Olympic Committee to win the gold medal.
According to USA Gymnastics, Biles dropped out due to an undisclosed medical issue after faltering in the vault competition -- the first event for the American team on Tuesday. "She will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions," the organization said in a statement.
Many speculated that Biles' decision to drop was more about her mental health than her physical health. Biles has been vocal in saying that the pressure of being on a global stage like the Olympics has been harder than ever. A few hours later, Biles clarified that her decision was indeed made for the sake of her mental health.

Tony Award-nominated actor Chad Kimball, among Broadway’s first wave of performers to contract the coronavirus last spring, is finding little support among his Broadway colleagues after he pledged to “respectfully disobey” Washington State Covid-19 guidelines limiting religious services and participation.
Kimball, a Seattle native, star of the hit, now-suspended, Broadway musical Come From Away and Tony-nominated for his performance in 2011’s Memphis, tweeted his opposition to Washington Governor Jay Inslee’s newly announced wide-ranging anti-covid restrictions that, among other measures, limit religious services to 25% indoor occupancy or no more than 200 people, with face coverings required at all times.
Kimball, who became sickened with Covid-19 last March, took particular issue with Inslee’s restrictions on singing during religious services. Under the new guidelines, “no choir, band, or ensemble shall perform during the service. Vocal or instrumental soloists are permitted to perform, and vocal soloists may have a single accompanist.”

Though it’s yet to launch in the UK and other parts of Europe, Disney+ has already proven itself to be a major player in North America – thanks in large part to its suite of digital content, which ranges from Marvel Studios to Star Wars and everything in between.
And much like its online peers, Disney+ is still to roll out a fresh wave of content for April 2020, beginning with Doctor Dolittle on April 1st – not to be confused with the recent remake starring McU mainstay Robert Downey Jr.
What’s more, April marks Earth Month, so you can expect plenty of eco-friendly documentaries to air via National Geographic. Indeed, it’s fair to say that the Disney+ lineup has fast become one of the most diverse on the market. From new episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars to age-old classics like Doctor Dolittle, there’s really something for everyone.

Patti Murin knows the power of Twitter. Murin, who originated the role of Princess Anna in Frozen on Broadway, is a regular tweeter. But unlike the rest of the world, her tweets got her a role in one. "It's literally how it happened," Murin told E! News. Murin said she was always aware of the Hallmark holiday movie tradition, and once she started watching, she understood. Here are details on the full soundtrack and song list from Frozen 2, as well as audio clips of Elsa and Olaf's big numbers.
Thanksigiving still hasn't arrive, yet we suspect countless children (and maybe just as many adults) are ready to build a snowman. Indeed, Frozen 2 has arrived. Six years after the original film captured the imagination of the youngest generation—and put its enchanted songbook into everyone else’s head, whether they wanted it there or not—Anna and Elsa are back. And with them comes the unenviable task of crafting a Frozen 2 soundtrack on par with the original.
Luckily, Walt Disney Animation Studios has compiled the same songwriting team as the original with Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, as well as score composer Christophe Beck. Additionally, the vocal talent that made the original “Let It Go” so empowering is also ready for an encore. Yep,...

The new musical “The Prom” won over industry folks with its big heart and bevy of Broadway insider jokes. But many wondered where each member of the ensemble cast would compete at this year’s Tony Awards. While the Tony Administration Committee decided Brooks Ashmanskas would be the sole Lead Actor contender, they went the opposite route with the women. Beth Leavel and Caitlin Kinnunen will each compete for Lead Actress in a Musical. So can they both land bids?
Leavel, a Tony winner for “The Drowsy Chaperone,” plays vain Broadway diva Dee Dee Allen. She and her fellow thespians head to a small town in Indiana to help Emma (Kinnunen) bring her girlfriend to the high school prom…and scoop up some much needed press in the process. Disney’s The Princess Bride has been flirting with Broadway for years, but the ever popular tale seems to be taking another step down – or at least toward – the aisle with the putting in place of a new creative team: composer and lyricist David Yazbek and a book writers Bob Martin and Rick Elice.
Disney Theatrical Productions confirmed today that the team has been recruited, but few other details – when, where, who else – were forthcoming about a stage adaptation for the 1987 Rob Reiner movie.
Yazbek is a Tony winner for The Band’s Visit, the Broadway hit now in its final stretch (closing date April 7), and his Tootsie is currently in previews at Broadway’s Marquis for an April 23 opening. Both Martin and Elice have shows currently on Broadway: Martin’s The Prom and Elice’s The Cher Show.

Not even Santa Claus or gusty winds could compete. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade yesterday drew the kind of post-parade buzz usually reserved for balloon blunders or temperature woes. This year, Broadway stole the show, with the parade’s first-ever same-sex kiss capping a performance from The Prom, the charming musical from director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw. Based loosely on a real-life incident, The Prom follows a troupe of hilariously self-obsessed theater stars of a certain age who swarm into a small conservative Indiana town in support of a high school girl who wants to take her girlfriend to the prom.
The musical’s big finale, bringing together the entire cast in song and dance, hits its high note when the girls (played by Caitlin Kinnunen and Isabelle McCalla) embrace and kiss, a bit of tenderness captured on live TV that immediately became a social media “Did you see that?” moment.

The 24 Hour Musicals is coming to Broadway for the first time.
The marathon process for The 24 Hour Musicals begins at 9 Pm the night before the performance. Writers, composers, directors, choreographers, actors, music directors, musicians and production staff — many of whom have never worked with or met each other before — gather for an orientation where they are asked to share one costume piece, one prop, a special skill, and to reveal something that they have always wanted to do on stage, as well as some singing and dancing. At 11 Pm, the composers and writers get to work crafting 15-20 minute musicals overnight; at 9 Am the next morning, the actors receive their roles and the directors, choreographers and musicians arrive to begin rehearsal. Less than 12 hours later, they must be ready to perform in front of a live audience.

Broadway actress and three-time Tony nominee Marin Mazzie died this morning in New York. She was 57.
Her death was announced by her husband, actor Jason Danieley. Mazzie had been fighting ovarian cancer since her diagnosis three years ago.

“The lights of Broadway all shine a little dimmer tonight,” wrote Daniel Dae Kim, her co-star in 2016’s The King and I. “My heart goes out to Jason and all who were lucky enough to call her family or friend.”
“Beautiful, brave and inspiring,” wrote Harvey Fierstein. “A glorious voice and an even better human being…”

Cats, the famed musical production from Andrew Lloyd Webber, is finally coming to movie screens, with Universal Pictures just announcing a Dec. 20, 2019, release date. Considering that the show was first staged way back in 1981 (two years before coming to Broadway), that's a really long time to wait for an adaptation. Wicked — and its alternate take on the The Wizard of Oz — is reaching theaters in 2020, only 17 years after its debut. That's like an express train in comparison! Andrew, who was coming off of some pretty massive stage successes like Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, took inspiration for the show from T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, crafting a story of a tribe of cats known as the Jellicles, and focusing on the night that one of them will be chosen to ascend to Heaviside Layer, to be reborn into a new life. Now cats, as we all know,...

Get ready to moonwalk, folks! It looks like the legacy of the late Michael Jackson is being memorialized on Broadway. While few details are known at this time, including the name of the show, there are a few exciting things worth noting! "The Michael Jackson Estate and Columbia Live Stage have partnered to develop a musical inspired by the pop icon; the show is expected to bow in New York in 2020," Playbill announced on Wednesday, June 20. In addition to a projected date, the musical — which will include a number of Michael’s greatest hits — will be written by two-time Pulitzer Prize Winner Lynn Nottage, who is best known for Sweat and Ruined. Christopher Wheeldon of An American in Paris fame has also "been tapped" to direct and choreograph, Playbill noted. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) This wouldn’t be the first time that the King of Pop’s musical catalog was used on stage.
