Cinematographer and director Warwick Thornton scored top honors Saturday at the Camerimage cinematography film festival for his magical tale of an aboriginal youth, “The New Boy,” which film jurors called a distinctive “portrait of an extinguished spirituality.”
Thornton, in accepting the Golden Frog, said he had been so moved by the cinematography work onscreen at the fest, a top global event for directors of photography, he’d been “tearing for a week.”
Ed Lachman, director of photography for Pablo Larrain’s horror fantasy “El Conde,” inspired by the life of Chilean tyrant Augusto Pinochet, won the Silver Frog for what the jury called “cinematic high poetry,” while the Bronze Frog and Audience Award went to cinematographer Robbie Ryan for his Gothic dream-like imagery in Emma Stone-starrer “Poor Things,” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.

For the second year in a row, a film starring Cate Blanchett has taken the lead prize at Poland’s EnergaCamerimage Festival, celebrating the work of the world’s best cinematographers. This year, the Aboriginal drama “The New Boy” won the Golden Frog for its cinematographer Warwick Thornton, who also happens to be the picture’s director.
The film follows a 9-year-old Aboriginal orphan taken in by a rural monastery. It premiered to kind notices at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. However, the film still does not have a U.S. release date at this time. In 2022, Todd Field’s “Tár” won the Golden Frog for Oscar-nominated cinematographer Florian Hoffmeister and also starred Blanchett.

Imagine the 96th Academy Awards ceremony opening with an epic “Barbie” musical medley.
According to Puck’s “What I’m Hearing” newsletter, The Academy wants it to happen. Who foots the bill on the production is another story. Typically the studios are responsible, but as Matthew Belloni writes, “Warners is selling off movies to raise money these days. By the time the Oscars arrive, marketing and awards budgets are spent, so who knows?”
But with three major songs vying for awards recognition — Dua Lipa’s disco pop ode “Dance the Night,” Ryan Gosling’s climactic centerpiece “I’m Just Ken” and Billie Eilish’s ballad “What Was I Made For?” — “Barbie” is the obvious pick for an extravagant Oscars musical number.
Director Greta Gerwig has been out campaigning for the three songs, which will all likely make the original song shortlist next next month, but only two songs from a given film can land nominations,...

Exclusive: S.S. Rajamouli is currently assembling a production team for a new movie about the birth and rise of Indian Cinema.
Rajamouli, whose Rrr racked up an Oscar win and over $166M WW, is not directing, we understand. At $130M, Rrr is the third highest grossing movie in Indian cinema. Rajamouli is ‘presenting’ which over in India is a bigger title than producer on a film, though akin to how Hollywood views the role of a producer.
The new biopic about Indian Cinema is not yet titled, though reps for Rajamouli promise it’s a “magnum opus telling” which will be told “on a huge scale and canvas.”
Rrr followed the fictitious telling of two legendary revolutionaries and their journey away from home before they started fighting for their country in the 1920s.
Rrr won an original song Oscar this past spring for its single “Naatu Naatu” written by M.M. Keeravani and Chandrabose.

When Everything Everywhere All at Once star Stephanie Hsu is about to get caught with hard drugs in the red band trailer for Joy Ride, she has to think quickly. And well, instead of deciding to swallow coke and pills like her friends, she hides the drugs up her asshole.
Putting a spin on comedies like Girls Trip, the movie stars Hsu as Chinese soap opera star Kat, who ends up in the aforementioned situation while helping with her college friend Audrey’s (Ashley Park) search for her birth mother in China. They are joined on the trip by Audrey’s childhood best friend and “hot mess” Lolo (Sherry Cola) and Deadeye (Sabrina Wu), Lolo’s “eccentric cousin.”
The film is described as a “hilarious and unapologetically explicit story of identity and self-discovery” in the official logline, which also promises that “their no-holds-barred, epic experience becomes a journey of bonding,...

After sweeping the 95th Academy Awards with seven monumental wins for Everything Everywhere All At Once, A24 plans to release the Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense in 4K for a theatrical release! Director Jonathan Demme’s first concert film is my favorite concert experience ever captured on film. The phenomenal performance by the Talking Heads changed how I listen to music. I’ll never forget the first time I watched Stop Making Sense on my way to All Tomorrow’s Parties 2008, curated by My Bloody Valentine.
Stop Making Sense stars core band members David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, Jerry Harrison, P-Funk Bernie Worrell, Alex Weir, Steve Scales, Lynn Mabry, and Edna Holt. Shot over three nights at Hollywood’s Pantages Theatre in December 1983, the elaborate set features memorable Talking Heads songs like “Psycho Killer,” “Life During Wartime,” “Found a Job,” “Slippery People,” Burning Down the House,” “Making Flippy Floppy,...

A newly restored 4K version of Talking Heads’ groundbreaking concert film, Stop Making Sense, is being released in theaters later this year. As part of today’s announcement, Talking Heads frontman David Byrne retrieves his famous oversized grey suit from the dry cleaner in a newly shared trailer.
Stop Making Sense 2023 comes courtesy of A24, which has acquired the film’s worldwide rights and will release it in theaters later this year to coincide with its 40th anniversary. Directed by Jonathan Demme, Stop Making Sense captured the band as they performed at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater in December 1983 in support of their fifth album, Speaking in Tongues. The highly choreographed production, unlike anything ever seen in its time, is universally acclaimed and remains the gold standard for concert films four decades later.
Accompanying the film will be a new deluxe edition of its soundtrack, due out on August 18th via Rhino Records.

John Travolta choked up as he introduced the In Memoriam segment at the 2023 Oscars, which featured a performance by Lenny Kravitz.
Travolta was teary eyed as he spoke onstage at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday ahead of Kravitz’s performance of “Calling All Angels.” Before Kravitz performed, Travolta choked up as he paid a subtle tribute to Grease co-star Olivia Newton John: “They’ve touched our hearts. They’ve made us smile, and became dear friends who we will always remain hopelessly devoted to.”
Kravitz sang and played piano as photos of famous faces who recently passed appeared on the large screen, including Newton-John, Burt Bacharach, Ray Liotta, Kirstie Alley, Irene Cara, Mary Alice, Raquel Welch, Nichelle Nichols and many others.
It was one of several performances Sunday night.
Rihanna sang “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever while Lady Gaga performed “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick.

Lady Gaga is in the house - and she brought it down with an emotional performance of her best-original-song-nominated track, "Hold My Hand," at the 2023 Oscars on Sunday night. It was originally reported that the singer, who's currently filming her next movie, wouldn't be present at the Dolby Theatre as a performer, however, it seems she tore herself away from the set long enough to pull together a last-minute performance for fans.
Gaga opened up her performance by introducing her song as the one she wrote for best picture nominee "Top Gun: Maverick"; she previously won best original song for "Shallow" from her 2018 film, "A Star Is Born." The singer, who sported a faded black T-shirt and ripped jeans on stage, also shared a heartfelt spiel about "Hold My Hand"'s message, saying, "It's deeply personal for me, and I think that we all need each other." Tom Cruise may not have attended the 2023 Oscars, but Lady Gaga represented his film Top Gun: Maverick in a memorable way by performing the soundtrack song — and Best Original Song nominee — “Hold My Hand.”
Gaga needed no introduction for her Oscars performance. The program cut to her already on stage, where she recalled writing the “deeply personal” song in the basement of her studio about how we all need heroes sometimes. Forever committed to the bit, the artist — who was previously seen in the audience in a gown and a full face of makeup — dressed down into black jeans and a black t-shirt for the performance, and completely took off her makeup. It matched the stark beginning of “Hold My Hand,” where Gaga sang a cappella before the track built to a rapturous end.

Lady Gaga appeared on the Academy Awards stage Sunday night to deliver a surprise performance of “Hold My Hand,” the Oscar-nominated song from “Top Gun: Maverick” — and the only thing more startling than that it happened at all, after earlier denials, was just how stripped-down, yet enormously effective, her reading of the song was.

David Byrne performed the Everything Everywhere All At Once soundtrack standout “This Is a Life” at the 2023 Oscars alongside co-writer and producer Son Lux and one of the film’s stars (and fellow nominees) Stephanie Hsu.
Adorned in white and joined by a crew of contemporary dancers, Byrne and Hsu duetted the film’s ballad with an initial touch of grace, only for Byrne’s elongated fingers — a nod to Eeaao’s iconic hot dog hands — to steal the show. The performance juxtaposed beauty and absurdity, much like the film itself.
Hsu stepped in for the song’s original contributing vocalist and nominee, Mitski, though the actor did appear on the soundtrack herself on the solo track, “Sucked into a Bagel.” Elsewhere, Hsu was in the running for Best Supporting Actress and Son Lux was in contention for Best Original Score, while the film overall received 11 nominations.

Just hours before the live telecast of the 95th Academy Awards, Et can confirm that Lady Gaga will be performing at the awards ceremony. The news comes after it was first reported that she would not be able to make the event.
Prior to Sunday, 2023 Oscars producer Glen Weiss said Gaga — who is nominated in the Best Original Song category for her song, “Hold My Hand,” from “Top Gun: Maverick” — was invited to perform but was unable to make the commitment at the time. “We have a great relationship with Lady Gaga and her camp,” Weiss said during a press conference last week.

Surprise! Lady Gaga is reportedly set to perform at the Oscars after all. On March 12, Variety reported that several sources have confirmed the "Hold My Hand" singer will perform her Oscar-nominated song from "Top Gun: Maverick" at the ceremony.
The news comes just a few days after Oscars executive producer and showrunner Glenn Weiss announced that the singer would not be blessing the stage with her vocals. On March 8, Weiss told Variety, "We have a great relationship with Lady Gaga and her camp. She is in the middle of shooting a movie right now. Here, we are honoring the movie industry and what it takes to make a movie after a bunch of back and forth . . . It didn't feel like she can get a performance to the caliber that we're used to with her and that she is used to. So, she is not going to perform on the show.

The 95th annual Academy Awards returns to the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood after a one-year hiatus on Sunday, with Jimmy Kimmel as the night’s host, marking his third time leading the evening.
“It’s so important to have a host who knows how to handle live television and a live audience,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer recently said of Kimmel’s appeal. “He’s funny, he’s respectful, his edges aren’t too sharp.”
All eyes will be on the late-night host, in the first ceremony since Will Smith infamously slapped Chris Rock onstage at last year’s awards show.
As for his approach to another possible slap, Kimmel told The Hollywood Reporter he’s ready: “If somebody comes up on the stage and slaps me? Well, I size them up, and, if I’m bigger than they are, I beat the shit out of them on television. And if it’s the Rock,...

Los Angeles, March 9 (Ians) Singer Lady Gaga’s number ‘Hold My Hand’, from the ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ soundtrack, is nominated for Best Original Song at the ceremony but she will be unable to join the other shortlisted artists at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theater due to scheduling conflicts with ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’, in which she plays Harley Quinn.

“Babylon” only has three Oscar nominations, but if you go by the odds, it will win two of them: Best Production Design, which it’s dominated all season, and Best Original Score, where Justin Hurwitz has recently lost some ground to “All Quiet on the Western Front,” composed by Volker Bertelmann. That race could come down to the wire and wind up a whole lot closer than the composers’ first Oscar showdown.
Hurwitz and Bertelmann have faced off at the Oscars before, though you might not realize it at first glance. Bertelmann also performs under the name Hauschka, which was how he was credited for his “Lion” (2016) score, co-written with Dustin O’Halloran. That season, Hauschka and O’Halloran lost the Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award, BAFTA and Oscar to Hurwitz, who swept for “La La Land.”
While it was obvious Hurwitz would win the Oscar back then, that’s not the case this time around.

Sorry, Little Monsters: Lady Gaga won’t be singing at this year’s Oscars.
Oscars executive producer Glenn Weiss confirmed that the pop superstar won’t perform her nominated song “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick at Sunday’s ceremony. The culprit? Gaga’s packed schedule. She’s too busy shooting her role opposite Joaquin Phoenix in the much-anticipated big-screen sequel Joker: Folie à Deux to prepare a proper performance.

Lady Gaga will not perform her anthemic “Top Gun: Maverick” ballad, “Hold My Hand,” on Sunday’s live Oscars telecast on ABC, according to show producer Glenn Weiss.
According to Deadline, the song will be included in clips for “Top Gun: Maverick” and while Gaga was intending to be available for the movies’ big night, her shooting schedule on Todd Phillips’ “Joker: Folie à Deux” will not allow her to attend this year’s ceremony.
The last time Gaga performed at the Oscars, she emerged an Academy Award winner for cowriting the high-octane song “Shallow,” and was also a Best-Actress nominee the same evening. But a Best Original Song win could happen all over again this year at Hollywood’s big night.

Oscars executive producer and showrunner Glenn Weiss confirmed the news that Gaga, who landed her fourth career nomination for the “Top Gun: Maverick” song “Hold My Hand,” will not be performing during a creative team press conference on Wednesday afternoon.
“We invited all five nominees. We have a great relationship with Lady Gaga and her camp. She is in the middle of shooting a movie right now. Here, we are honoring the movie industry and what it takes to make a movie after a bunch of back and forth…It didn’t feel like she can get a performance to the caliber that we’re used to with her and that she is used to. So, she is not going to perform on the show,” Weiss said.

The 95th Academy Awards are upon us and with it a number of highly anticipated musical performances. Rihanna is set to perform “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” for the first time publicly. Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava will sing “Naatu Naatu” from “Rrr” no doubt accompanied by a pack of energetic backup dancers. David Byrne and Son Lux will join Supporting Actress nominee Stephanie Hsu to sing “This is a Life” from expected Best Picture winner “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” Lenny Kravitz will perform the In Memoriam and, maybe if we’re lucky, Lady Gaga will show up to sing “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick.” And it’s possible that one or two of these performances will join the increasingly long list of great musical numbers that have graced the Oscars stage.

Can you imagine being nominated in this category and hearing the very last nominee’s name, and it’s the one and only John Williams, who has received 53 Oscar nominations and won five times? Granted, it’s been almost 30 years since his name was last called on Oscar night, so maybe the other four nominees don’t have so much to worry about, but make no mistake that this is a highly competitive year.
Four of this year’s nominees line-up with Best Picture, with one very notable newcomer to the category.

The final stretch of the 2023 Oscar season has started with voters casting their ballots for the winners of the 95th annual Academy Awards. All season long, Gold Derby has been interviewing dozens of the nominees, including four contenders for Best Score. Click on each composer’s name below to watch each of these 20-minute interviews.
Volker Bertelmann, ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’
Composer Bertelmann grew up reading the 1929 novel “All Quiet on the Western Front’ when he was in school, which served as the basis for the 1930 Best Picture winner and the new 2022 Netflix adaptation. He recalls the advice that director Edward Berger gave him about how he wanted to film to sound: “I want to have a music for the stomach of Paul Bäumer, who’s the main protagonist. I want to have destruction. And I want to have a snare that is played by somebody who can’t play the snare…...

Almost exactly one year ago, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” premiered at SXSW. The sophomore feature from the two-headed directorial entity known as Daniels — aka Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — had plenty of hype going into the festival, as the GenX filmmaker had already garnered a decade of fans for their music video work, with bonus points for the silly-sweet gamble of their 2016 feature debut “Swiss Army Man.” Yet even the visionary concept of an island castaway riding a farting corpse to freedom couldn’t have prepared audiences for the cultural phenomenon to come.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” was an instant sensation with almost as many layers as the multiverses strewn across in its plot. It’s an innovative and hilarious sci-fi comedy about the messiness of modern life, a touching exploration of intergenerational Asian American identity, and a rousing showcase for Asian actors long under-appreciated by the industry.

Four-time Grammy winner Lenny Kravitz will perform for Sunday’s emotional “In Memoriam” segment on the Oscars 2023 ceremony. While only 40-50 people are generally remembered for the television ceremony on ABC, over 200 people will be recognized on the Academy’s webpage starting that evening.
