Comcast CEO Brian Roberts’ Pay Rises to $35.5M, President Michael Cavanagh’s Drops to $29.6M in 2023
NBCUniversal owner Comcast has disclosed higher 2023 compensation packages for chairman and CEO Brian Roberts and president Michael Cavanagh, along with pay details for other top executives.
Comcast’s proxy statement, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday, a day after the company’s first-quarter 2024 earnings report, showed that Roberts’ pay hit $35.5 million in 2023, up 11 percent compared with $32.1 million in 2022. He had made $34 million in 2021, $32.7 million in 2020 and $36.4 million in 2019.
Cavanagh’s compensation package was worth $29.6 million last year, down 27 percent from $40.5 million in 2022 when he had served as chief financial officer until being promoted to president in October 2022, which brought him a pay boost. Jason Armstrong then took over as CFO in early 2023.
Cavanagh saw increases across most compensation categories, but his options awards for 2023 amounted to $7.0 million, compared with $21.1 million in 2022 when he was elevated.
Robert’s salary remained at $2.5 million in 2023, but his stock awards rose from $13.4 million in 2022 to $15.0 million,...

Peacock, the streaming service of Comcast’s entertainment unit NBCUniversal, grew its first-quarter revenue and narrowed its loss to $639 million from $704 million in the year-ago period, and $825 million in the fourth quarter of 2023, despite higher programming costs. The streamer ended March with 34 million paying subscribers, compared with a year-end 2023 figure of 31 million, the company also said on Thursday.
“Peacock paid subscribers increased 55 percent compared to the prior-year period to 34 million, including net additions of 3 million in the first quarter,” Comcast highlighted. “Peacock revenue increased 54 percent to $1.1 billion.”
Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning epic Oppenheimer exclusively started streaming on Peacock on Feb. 16 after its theatrical release in July 2023.
As streaming profits, which have so far been elusive for most industry giants, remain in focus for Wall Street, Peacock previously posted a full-year 2023 loss of $2.75 billion. But Comcast CFO Jason Armstrong earlier this year emphasized that “2023 marked the peak in annual losses at Peacock,...

Comcast CFO Jason Armstrong touted the momentum of NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock, thanks to the likes of Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-nominated Oppenheimer, as well as such series as Ted and The Traitors, and the benefits of having a combined offering of entertainment and sports content during an appearance at an investor conference in San Francisco on Wednesday.
Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Tmt Conference in a session that was webcast, he was asked about the recently unveiled sports streaming joint venture of Walt Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery and Fox Corp. “We’ve seen a lot of value in having sports and entertainment in one portfolio,” Armstrong responded. “Because as important as sports is, and it’s super important as an acquisition driver, it ends up being about 10 percent of our overall usage … but what are people sticking around for and doing in between sports is between our pay-one original library,...

Peacock, the streaming service of Comcast’s entertainment unit NBCUniversal, grew its fourth-quarter revenue by 57 percent to surpass $1 billion for a quarter for the first time, while narrowing its loss. The streamer ended 2023 with 31 million paying subscribers, the media, entertainment and technology giant disclosed Thursday.
Comcast president Mike Cavanagh said at an investor conference in early December that Peacock had reached 30 million subs. It ended September with 28 million subscribers after adding 4 million during the third quarter. That meant a gain of around 3 million in the final quarter of 2023.
Comcast CFO Jason Armstrong told analysts during a morning call that the 3 million new Peacock subscribers during the latest financial quarter came in part from viewers drawn to NFL and Big Ten football games, without specifying actual numbers. NBCU’s loss related to Peacock amounted to $825 million in the fourth quarter, compared with a year-ago loss of $978 million on revenue of $660 million.

NBCUniversal’s flagship streamer Peacock reached 28 million subscribers after adding 4 million during the latest quarter, and did so on a narrowed loss of $565 million.
The studio’s streaming service lost $614 million in the year-ago period. The entertainment conglomerate earlier pointed to “peak losses” at around $3 billion for Peacock this year, which on Thursday were reduced to a $2.8 billion loss outlook.
The latest Peacock earnings report, published as part of Q3 results from NBCU parent company Comcast, also showed streamer revenues coming in at $840 million, up 64 percent from a year-earlier.
Comcast Corp. president Mike Cavanagh on a morning analyst call said the media giant was sticking to its plans for Peacock to anchor its transition to the streaming space from legacy linear TV networks. “We continue to be pleased with our progress in the few short years since we’ve pivoted our streaming strategy as a result of the ownership changes at Hulu,...

Cablers and satellite TV providers knew it was coming. They’ve been able to see the writing on the wall for years, and many companies are already preparing for it by doing whatever they can to build up their streaming services. Pay TV is on its way out, and one report suggests that more than half of American households have cut the cord for good.
A new survey from the media research firm Ampere Analysis gives pay-tv providers even more cause to be concerned. The data from Ampere shows that in 2023, average spending per household in the United States on video services will fall, after peaking at $1,146 per household in 2022. Cord cutting will be the biggest driver of losses, and it will cause the yearly pay-tv investment per household to fall below $650 for the first time since 2006.

Top cable and traditional pay TV providers in the U.S. widened their subscriber losses in 2022, as more consumers continue to cut the cord.
The largest pay-tv providers lost a total of 5.8 million net video subscribers in 2022, compared to a loss of 4.7 million in 2021, according to the latest tally from Leichtman Research Group. The pain was felt most acutely among the cable providers, who saw a total loss of 3.5 million subscribers in 2022, compared to 2.7 million in 2021. Of those, Comcast saw the biggest drop, losing just over 2 million subscribers, followed by Charter, with a loss of 686,000, and an estimated drop of 340,000 for Cox.
Satellite TV provider DirecTV also saw a big loss, losing an estimated 1.5 million subscribers in 2022, according to the research group.

Comcast continues to lose cable TV subscribers, but its streaming platform Peacock is posting customer growth, despite rising losses.

Comcast is looking forward to 2024, a year in which it will gain: A) Hulu or B) a boatload of money, based on Hulu’s huge valuation. There’s also C): It could buy another significant media company, a purchase possibly financed in part by B. And let’s face it: NBCU needs one of those outcomes to compete in the streaming wars. With or without next-day NBC episodes, Peacock is no contender for the crown.
In January 2024, Comcast will likely sell its 33 percent ownership interest in Hulu to Disney. According to a deal the companies made in 2019, Hulu is valued at a guaranteed minimum of 27.5 billion. Disney’s two-thirds ownership share has a baseline value of 18 billion with NBCU’s third at 9 billion, but only Disney contractually has to buy its partner out.

Widespread optimism months ago that domestic box office might readily return to pre-Covid levels has given way to a new sense of pragmatism about the movie business.
This year’s tally will far surpass last year’s 4.5 billion haul, but it will certainly fall billions short of 2019’s 11.4 billion in receipts, and all bets are off for 2023. Given the uncertainty, Wall Street analysts and media executives are sharpening their pencils and revising the books. Their general sentiment is that there is still money to be made — particularly on the studio side — but that old methods will no longer suffice.
Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra was asked at this week’s Bank of America investor conference if he thought the box office would eventually get back to pre-pandemic levels. “I hope it does,” he said. “I believe it will get close.” Despite the domestic struggles, he noted, “the rest of...

As more competitors enter the advertising-supported streaming space, including Netflix and Disney, Peacock executives believe the platform remains in a leadership position.
“We know there’s competition coming our way, but we’re out ahead with a really good team,” said Jason Armstrong, executive vp, deputy chief financial officer and treasurer of NBCUniversal owner Comcast Corporation.
Speaking at Bank of America Securities 2022 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference Thursday, Armstrong cited the 7 billion NBCUniversal brought in at the recent upfronts, with 1 billion of that going to Peacock as evidence.
He also addressed the company’s reported consideration as an advertising partner for Netflix, citing it as a signal of Comcast’s strength in advertising technology and saying that the company was “near the top” of Netflix’s list, but “may not have been willing to write the biggest guarantee around it.”

Walk Like a Duck Entertainment has acquired the life rights to the story of John Fairfax, an adventurer who crossed both the Atlantic and the Pacific in a rowboat.
The company plans to make a film about Fairfax and believes his extraordinary exploits have the making of gripping cinema. Fairfax crossed the Atlantic, becoming the first solo oarsman in recorded history to cross any ocean, and reached the shores of Hollywood, Fla., the day before Apollo 11 landed on the moon. His crossing was seen as so momentous that the astronauts sent back a message to Earth offering him their congratulations. “We who sail what President Kennedy once called ‘The new ocean of space’ are pleased to pay our respects to the man who, single handedly, has conquered the still formidable ocean of water,” astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin A. Aldrin Jr. wrote at the time.
