MGM+ has ordered a limited series adaptation of the George R. Stewart sci-fi novel “Earth Abides” with Alexander Ludwig set to star.
The streamer has ordered six episodes of the series, with Ludwig set to play the role of Ish. Production will begin in Vancover in April with the show slated for a late 2024 debut.
The official logline for the series states, “When a plague of unprecedented virulence sweeps the globe, the human race is all but wiped out. In the aftermath, as the great machine of civilization slowly and inexorably breaks down, only a few shattered survivors remain to struggle against the slide into extinction.”
The character of Ish is further described as “a brilliant but solitary young geologist living a semi-isolated life who awakens from a coma only to find that there is no one left alive but him. A plague of unprecedented virulence has swept the globe,...

In one fell swoop, Heels star Kelli Berglund stole the show and the championship belt.
Created by Michael Waldron and run by Mike O’Malley, Heels is the professional wrestling world’s answer to Friday Night Lights, as Jack Spade (Stephen Amell) and his younger brother Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig) are in a feud over their late father’s small-town Georgia wrestling promotion, Duffy Wrestling League (Dwl). Considering that both brothers are equally to blame for their fractured relationship, Berglund’s character, Crystal Tyler, quickly became the sympathetic fan favorite in their stead. After all, she began the acclaimed series in the thankless role of Ace’s valet, while also having an undefined toxic relationship with the younger Spade brother.
As season one progressed, it became clear that Crystal was not only a wrestling enthusiast, but also a highly skilled wrestler in her own right. And in the finale of the first season,...

Starz might just be the hottest ticket in town this summer. In the wake of “Minx’s” triumphant return last week comes the long-awaited second season of the professional wrestling drama “Heels,” which is quietly one of TV’s best shows.
Starring Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig as brothers Jack and Ace Spade, the Georgia-set series explores their complicated family dynamic through the fabricated but exciting world of small-town professional wrestling, in which one is considered a face (hero) and one is a heel (villain). Created by “Loki’s” Michael Waldron and with Mike O’Malley as showrunner, the series is bigger and better in Season 2, which premieres Friday at 10/9c, as it digs further into the brothers’ respective traumas and the ongoing feud between the Duffy Wrestling League (Dwl) and rival promotion Florida Wrestling Dystopia (Fwd), led by O’Malley’s Charlie Gully. With its compelling family drama and a well-placed sense of humor,...

Sports dramas are familiar to the television landscape, and are often beloved. Fans have leaned into series like “Glow,” “All American,” and even the mid-2000s cult classic “Friday Night Lights.” Yet it’s not the competitive action that keeps audiences pulled in weekly, or amid hours-long binges: It’s the characters and the worlds carefully crafted around them.
It’s been nearly two years since the Season 1 finale of the Michael Waldron-created series “Heels” aired. Set in the fictional town of Duffy, Georgia, “Heels” follows brothers Jack (Stephen Amell) and Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig), the stars of the Duffy Wrestling League (Dwl). The league and its dilapidated dome are the life’s work of the Spade brothers’ late father, Tom (David James Elliot). Jack has struggled to keep Tom’s fledgling dream and business alive in his absence.

If you thought the chances of the Duffy Wrestling League succeeding would increase on Heels Season 2, the latest trailer will probably dash those hopes.
Starz on Monday unveiled a new sneak peek at the next chapter of the Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig drama, and it teases lots of tension for everyone involved.
The premium cabler previously teased the second season with a trailer earlier this month, but the latest footage hints at plenty of big swings in the storytelling department.
Heels Season 1 was a big success story, and with fans waiting almost two years for fresh episodes, there are high expectations to deliver a satisfying follow-up season.
A small-town sports drama series based on a wrestling league in rural Georgia, Heels is aptly named after the wrestling term for a villain or antagonist.
"Most stories center around heroes vs. villains, but in wrestling, it's faces vs. heels," the logline teases.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details of the literal s***show of tonight’s Heels Season 1 finale.
In the end, the battle in the State Fair ring between feuding brothers Jack Spade and Ace Spade saw neither holding the coveted belt in the Season 1 finale of Heels.
With a sh*t-stained Wild Bill Hancock (Chris Bauer) taking down the crazed wrestling league rival Charlie Gully, the Stephen Amell- and Alexander Ludwig-portrayed heel and face of the Duffy Wrestling League were on their asses in the ring as former valet Crystal (Keli Berglund) tossed the script, won the match, won over the crowd and claimed the ladder to take the belt in front of thousands of Peach State fans.
It was a fitting end for the Michael Waldron-created and Mike O’Malley-showrun series that has yet to receive an official Season 2 renewal from Starz. Even more so perhaps...

Women in professional wrestling have fought to be taken seriously as more than eye candy. Progress was certainly made in recent years with lady grapplers headlining WrestleMania, but there is still much work to be done. Actress Kelli Berglund can relate to the struggle working in Hollywood, putting that resilience into her portrayal of Crystal Tyler on the drama Heels. Berglund, who also turned heads in another Starz series, Now Apocalypse, plays a valet (manager) to Alexander Ludwig’s Ace Spade. Crystal wants to do more than stand at ringside and look pretty in the Duffy Wrestling League. She is constantly fighting for her voice to be heard by Dwl’s booker and Ace’s brother, Jack (Stephen Amell). We caught up with Berglund to chat about stepping in the ring, Crystal’s growth and evolution over the season, and more. Brandon Moningka How much of a wrestling fan were you?...

The further into this show one goes, the more they find out about the characters that are being played, and Ace Spade actually showed a little more heart this time around which was kind of surprising. Up until now, he’s been little more than the troubled young wrestler that’s extremely selfish and throws a fit when he doesn’t get his way. But when it comes to his nephew he’s a big softie since he loves the kid quite a bit. Unfortunately, when it comes to his father he tends to clam up a bit and becomes hard to talk to.

It's an easy supposition that Jack's plan, such that it was, to teach Ace a lesson backfired horribly.
In theory, it wasn't a bad idea to ask Ace to lose the fight. If Wild Bill hadn't come calling, dangling a future in the big leagues before him, Ace might not have seen that future snuffed out before an energized audience.
But the stars aligned perfectly to create a disaster that even Jack couldn't have planned.
There is a time to teach lessons to those you love and your employees, but Jack's attempt to impart humility to Ace played out on a public stage, and no matter how you choose to view it, it looks ugly.
Jack drills down kayfabe to his wrestlers, and Ace in particular, but we might need another name for keeping reality out of the ring to the same degree you want to keep the story going out of it.

The first episode of this show was definitely an odd way to start out, but it makes sense considering that it explains the dynamic in Dwl and the relationship between Jack and Ace Spade, which is volatile, to say the least. But hot on the heels, no pun intended, of the premiere episode, Dusty Finish comes out with the aftermath of Ace crying in the ring, and it’s not pretty. The episode makes it pretty clear that a wrestler breaking kayfabe in the ring is bound to be turned on by a lot of fans, if not all of them

For the stars and creative team of Heels, the Starz drama is more than just an inside look at the world of professional wrestling. Heels tackles universal themes that extend far beyond the the scripted fights and spandex-clad heroes and villains of Dwl for a deep and resonating story of passion, brotherhood, forgiveness and more.
“This show that Michael [Waldron] has created that we’ve all worked on is very deep,” said writer and showrunner Mike O’Malley during the show’s TCA panel on Thursday.
Penned by Waldron and O’Malley, Heels follows brothers Jack Spade (Stephen Amell) and Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig) who seek to bring back their family-owned indie wrestling promotion and carry on their father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind.

In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind.

Heels brothers Jack (Stephen Amell) and Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig) are the Duffy Wrestling League’s biggest draws.
Their anticipated one-on-one match in the series premiere brought a packed crowd to the Duffy Dome, even if the ending didn’t live up to expectations. (Spoiler Alert: It lasted mere seconds and concluded with Jack going off script and injuring his brother in the ring to prevent him from going to the big leagues.

When the new Starz wrestling drama Heels began production last fall, the pandemic posed challenges that were both very new to the industry and also costly. And when dealing with a high contact sport, the stakes are even higher.
“Everybody had to be very disciplined,” executive producer and showrunner Mike O’Malley told Deadline. “We started shooting in late Aug., so the pandemic had been going on for about six months and people were scared they were never going to work again. If we couldn’t figure out a way to work in our business and make television and be responsible, then we wouldn’t make more television. I think there was a responsibility from this group and certainly from my perspective where we felt we had to show this was possible. We tested often, we stayed away from indoor restaurants and away from people. The isolation was very difficult.”

Oh, how the mighty fall.
To Jack Spade, kayfabe is everything. He and Ace grew up with it. In the shadow of their father, Tom "King" Spade, they learned that your reputation is crafted, while real life should be kept private in the wrestling world.
On Heels Season 1 Episode 1, going off script and letting his town-level fame go to his head taught Duffy Wrestling Lead's hero, Ace Spade, a helluva lesson.
It's not as simple as that, of course.
Jack and Ace Spade spent their entire lives leading up to that moment at the end of the premiere.
We may have spent only 55 minutes in their world, but the pain, the shock, was just as sincere from our perspective.
Sibling rivalry is a bitch, but everything is heightened when you're living in the public eye. And when Tom Spade died, leaving the Dwl to Jack, they were no longer just...

And finally, we've arrived at our last Heels interview before the show launches on Starz on Sunday, August 15.
Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig aren't strangers to physical demands in their work, but with Jack and Ace Spade, they've got the whole package with emotional character arcs requiring exciting stuntwork.
Below, find out why they do it and what to expect from Heels.
So, Stephen, you have had a love affair with professional wrestling for a while. What does it feel like to be leading this particular production?
Stephen: Well, I feel I've been dating a girl for 25 years and I finally made it official. I was saying earlier, any opportunity for me to be an ambassador for professional wrestling.
They don't need me or this show or any support. But to be able to shine a light on not just pro wrestling, but the part of it that not a lot of people see,...

Alexander Ludwig is a big, strong dude who starred on “Vikings,” a History channel show about big, strong dudes. These days he’s a lead on Starz drama “Heels,” a show about professional wrestlers — big, strong dudes (and women) who take big time punishment, regardless of the scripted nature of a match.
Ludwig is an athlete — he grew up skiing competitively — and a self-described “adrenaline junkie.”
The 29-year-old, who plays local wrestling rock star Ace Spade opposite big brother and Dwl (Duffy Wrestling League) Champion Jack Spade (Stephen Amell), said that training for and shooting the in-ring scenes for the new Starz wrestling drama “Heels” was “more painful than anything I’ve ever done.”
“My response to anybody who says wrestling is fake is, I go, ‘I dare you to run the ropes and take a flat-back bump and tell me that you think this is fake,’ because the only...

A sibling rivalry unlike any other. In this exclusive sneak peek from the Aug. 15 premiere of Starz's new drama Heels, brothers Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig) and Jack Spade (Stephen Amell) brainstorm moves for their upcoming wrestling match. While Ace is clearly excited for the face off, Jack seems underwhelmed by his brother's ideas. "Try this one on for size," an excited Ace states before climbing to the top rope to flip off of it. "So, I get to the top turnbuckle here, moonsault. You catch me mid-air and, bam, slam me onto the ground." As he continues, Ace explains that this will fake out the audience, who will think he's done in the match. "But I get back up," he adds....

We have so much to share with you about Heels, the upcoming drama on Starz, premiering on August 15.
We had the opportunity to visit with the cast during their virtual press day, and we're bringing all of it to you.
Our first interview was with Alison Luff and Kelli Berglund. Alison plays Staci Spade, wife of Jack Spade (Stephen Amell), and Kelli is Crystal, valet for Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig). Here's your opportunity to get to know a little bit about their characters before the premiere.
Kelli, starting with you, can each of you tell me a little bit about your characters and your perspective?
Kelli: Sure. So, Crystal is Ace's valet. And for those who don't know what a valet is, it's by definition a wrestler's manager, but I like to consider her kind of like a cheerleader as well. So she runs out in the ring with him...

Arrow alum Stephen Amell will soon lace up his leather boots in the wrestling drama Heels, premiering this Sunday at 9/8c on Starz.
He stars as Jack Spade, a family man and wrestler with big dreams to expand the Duffy Wrestling League, which he inherited from his father, beyond its small-town roots. The show, which was created by Michael Waldron (Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), finds Amell performing many of his character’s impressive in-ring moves, including a coast-to-coast leap from the top rope you’ll see in the first episode.

A new type of fight club takes center stage the trailer for Starz’s Heels. The premium cabler has unveiled the trailer and key art for its upcoming hourlong wrestling drama, which stars Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig.
Written by Michael Waldron, with Mike O’Malley as showrunner, Heels is a story about the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small-town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals, Jack Spade (Amell) and Ace Spade (Ludwig), war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy (Ludwig) and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel (Amell). But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind.

Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig) is a natural athlete with professional wrestling “in his blood.” The sky — in this case, presumably the WWE — is the limit for that one. But in the full-length trailer for the upcoming Starz drama “Heels,” Ace is simply trying to “hold it together.”
His brother Jack (Stephen Amell) isn’t having a much easier go of things. For starters, he can’t even figure out who wins the big Jack vs. Ace main event. Maybe go play soccer with your boy instead.
Watch the trailer via the video above.
The drama, written and created by “Loki” creator Michael Waldron, follows a family-owned wrestling promotion company and two brothers (and rivals) who war over their late father’s legacy.

Starz released a trailer for its new wrestling drama “Heels,” which will premiere on Aug. 15 at 9 p.m.
Set in a close-knit community in Georgia, “Heels” follows the people of a small town who chase their dreams in the world of independent professional wrestling. It centers on a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, one must play the good guy and the other their nemesis, otherwise known as “the heel.” In the real world, these characters prove difficult to live up to — or hard to leave behind.
Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig portray the set of siblings, older brother Jack Spade and younger brother Ace Spade, respectively. The cast also includes Alison Liff, Mary McCormack, Kelli Berglund, Allen Maldonado, James Harrison and Chris Bauer.

No, that’s not WWE’s Adam “Edge” Copeland in the first-look photos for Starz’s upcoming series, “Heels,” it’s his “Vikings” co-star Alexander Ludwig. But the resemblance certainly is uncanny, which bodes well for pro-wrestling fans who were hoping the Ludwig- and Stephen Amell-led drama had an authentic aesthetic.
The first look images from “Heels,” which follows a family-owned wrestling promotion in small-town Georgia, show Amell and Ludwig all costumed up as wrestlers Jack Spade and his younger brother Ace Spade, respectively. Stephen Amell is recovering from a back injury sustained earlier this week while shooting his Starz’s wrestling drama, Heels, in Atlanta.

Amell was immediately assessed by the on-set medic and wrestling/stunt coordinators immediately following the injury. All requisite stunt safety protocols were being observed at the time, we are told.

Exclusive: Chris Bauer (The Deuce), Allen Maldonado (The Last O.G.) and James Harrison (S.W.A.T.) are set as series regulars opposite Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig in Heels, Starz’s eight-episode hourlong drama set in the outrageous world of independent professional wrestling. Kelli Berglund and Alison Luff also star.
Written by Michael Waldron and directed by Peter Segal, with Mike O’Malley as showrunner, Heels is a story about the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small town pro wrestling.

Arrow’s Stephen Amell trades the streets of Star City for the squared circle, headlining Starz’s wrestling drama series, titled Heels.
Heels is an inside jargon term within the professional wrestling industry referring to the role of villainous wrestlers, whose jobs are to generate “heat” amongst the audience, getting people behind the heroic “babyface” wrestler. Yet, it’s a concept to which Stephen Amell, the former heroic defender of Arrow’s Star City, will soon become associated, thanks to a Starz television series.
Starz gave an eight-episode order for an hourlong wrestling-centric drama, called Heels, back in August 2019, setting up the next television platform for Amell, who has completed a defining eight-season starring run on The CW’s Arrow, and has long been associated with wrestling, having participated in it sporadically, utilizing his now-legendary training.
