KollywoodDirected by Don Sandy, ‘Gorilla’ is a confused film that feels like a half-hearted effort right from the start.Anjana ShekarHeist comedy is an exciting genre. There’s plenty of action, risky plans that involve extreme stunts and, more importantly, there’s plenty of thrills. Often for us the audience, there’s excitement from having watched a perfectly executed heist on screen, the more impossible it looks the more thrilled we are. But in actor Jiiva’s Gorilla we only end up feeling robbed of our time and money, and generally sad from realising that such films are still being made. Turns out, the film’s posters showing a group of people, armed and striking a pose, standing along with a stylish looking gorilla carrying a machine gun is the most elaborate trick the makers pulled on us. Gorilla, directed by Don Sandy who made his debut with Mahabalipuram in...

KollywoodThe film's main character is a Chimpanzee named Kong. Digital NativeDigital NativeThe first look poster of Jiiva’s upcoming film titled Gorilla was released by its makers on Thursday. Helming the affairs of the film is director Don Sandy who had directed the crime thriller Mahabalipuram earlier. The film's main character is a Chimpanzee. The Chimpanzee which is named Kong, is from the world renowned Samut training station of Thailand, which boasts of training animals for Hollywood films like Hangover 2, Planets of the Apes hence the shooting of a major chunk of Gorilla is taking place there, a source reveals. In an interview the film's director told Toi, "We have had scenes in Tamil cinema that show bank robberies. But no Tamil film has explored the idea in totality, in a full-length film. This movie will be like those bank robbery movies in Hollywood. It will be an out-and-out comedy where the lead cast heads off to loot a bank. They all have a short flashback as to why they are doing it, too. It will be an interesting subject for Tamil audiences.” Shalini Pandey of Arjun Reddy fame has been roped in to play the female lead and the film also has a bevy of stars in the cast including Radha Ravi, Sathish, Muniskanth, Yogi Babu and Mottai Rajendran. It may be mentioned here that Rj Balaji was initially roped in to play a pivotal role in this entertainer but later he was replaced with Sathish. The film is bankrolled by Vijayaraghavendra under his banner All In Pictures, who bankrolled movies such as Masala Padam and Rum. The music for this comedy entertainer will be composed by Sam Cs of Vikram Vedha fame. Vetri Mahendran will crank the camera and Ruben is in charge of the cuts. Jiiva will be teaming up with Joker fame Rajumurugan for his next titled Gypsy. The pre-production work has begun and soon the team will start shooting for the movie. Unlike Raju Murugan's earlier movies, Cuckoo and Joker, sources say Gypsy will be a commercial entertainer with a subtle social message. It will be a travel based film which will be shot across the country. (Content provided by Digital Native)...

KollywoodPETA had urged the filmmakers to use CGI instead of real animals.Digital NativeDigital NativePETA had advised the makers of the upcoming film Gorilla, starring Jiiva in the lead role, to use VFX instead of a real chimpanzee to shoot the film. Apparently, the film is centered on a chimpanzee and the filmmakers made arrangements to use the services of an animal trained at the Samut Training Station of Thailand, well known for training chimps. However, with PETA raising an objection to it, the filmmakers have made it clear that the entire film has been shot already. In a letter to the producers, PETA India’s associate director of celebrity and public relations, Sachin Bangera had said, “Compassionate, forward-thinking filmmakers would never dream of hauling sensitive wild animals to a chaotic movie set and forcing them to ‘act’ for viewers’ amusement. Blockbusters such as the Planet of the Apes franchise and The Jungle Book have relied on technical wizardry and advanced CGI to create realistic animal characters without harming or harassing their live counterparts.” However, the film’s producers in a letter have stated that the entire shooting has been completed. The contents of the letter are as follows, “PETA had requested us not to use live chimpanzee hereafter for shooting. As it is, we have finished shooting of the entire film. We also informed them that the entire shoot and the portions involving the animal have been shot within the legalities, rules and regulations of our government and Thailand government.” Directed by Don Sandy, the film is bankrolled by Vijayaraghavendra under his banner All In Pictures, who bankrolled movies such as Masala Padam and Rum. The music for this comedy entertainer will be composed by Sam Cs of Vikram Vedha fame. Jiiva, who plays the lead role in Gorilla, also a couple of films lined up for release this year including Kee and Gypsy which are in different stages of production. After bagging a plum role in the bilingual film Savitri, the biopic on legendary southern actress Savitri, and the Tamil remake of Telugu film 100 % Love, which has been titled 100 % Kaadhal, she has now signed a yet-untitled comedy heist thriller opposite Jiiva, who is basking in the success of horror-comedy Sangili Bungili Kathavu Thorae. To be directed by Don Sandy, the film will have music by Sam Cs, who made a splash with Vikram Vedha this year. The team also confirmed that a big surprise awaits the audience. Apparently, she tried to adjust her dates but as the film didn’t take off as planned in August, she was left with no option than to walk out. Even before Lavanya, Vanamagan fame Sayyeshaa was considered for the project and the makers even approached her but she turned down the offer. 100% Kaadhal is being directed by debutant Chandra Mouli, former associate of Sukumar who directed 100% Love.
