In January, A24 Music shared Paramore’s cover of “Burning Down the House” as the lead single from their forthcoming Talking Heads tribute album. Now, another teaser single from the compilation has arrived: Lorde’s cover of “Take Me to the River.”
Originally written by Al Green, “Take Me to the River” was a bit of an unlikely Talking Heads cut, since David Byrne was apprehensive about recording a cover. Nonetheless, the band’s 1978 version made it onto their album More Songs About Buildings and Food, and has since become a beloved slice of their inventive sound.
Lorde has accompanied her cover with a lengthy note in which she reminisces about her first time hearing Talking Heads and the impact it had on her creatively. You can read it in full below.

Surprise — Toro y Moi is back with a brand new EP called Sandhills, which arrives with an accompanying short film.
While the musical alias of Chaz Bear has often been more closely associated with genres like alt-pop, disco, psych, and yacht rock, Sandhills — named after a sleepy shopping mall in Bear’s hometown of Columbia, South Carolina — sees the musician explore a more folksy, Americana side of his art, fleshing out his songwriting with banjo, lap steel, and a lot of nostalgia. Sandhills is an ode to Bear’s Southern upbringing, but also acts as a benchmark of how far he’s come since passing out his first batch of self-recorded CDs.
Sandhills, the film, takes a pretty literal approach to this homecoming. It was produced by Bear’s high school photography teacher Katherine Perry, and directed by Steve Daniels, who once assisted Bear for a video with his high school band.

Caroline Polachek has unveiled her second solo album, Desire, I Want to Turn into You. Listen to the LP below.
Featuring long-released cuts “Bunny Is a Rider” and “Billions” as well as more recently premiered singles “Welcome to My Island” and Song of the Week “Blood and Butter,” Desire, I Want to Turn into You follows Polachek’s 2019 solo debut Pang.
Of the title, the artist explained, “One, it can be read as being about the ‘you.’ We all know that feeling of falling in love, of wanting to obsessively learn from and become that person. But on the other hand, maybe desire is the thing you want to turn into itself.”
Polachek is set to kick off a lengthy world tour in support of the album, which features a revolving door of esteemed indie rock support from George Clanton, Toro Y Moi, Sudan Archives, Magdalena Bay, Alex G, and Ethel Cain.

All Chaz Bear wanted was a vehicle. By early January 2021, he’d spent ten months cloistered in his home studio in Oakland, California, putting the finishing touches on his seventh album as Toro y Moi, and the time had come to think about a way of presenting it to the world in an ongoing pandemic. “Say, hypothetically, I can’t play venues,” he remembers asking himself. “What are you gonna do?” His mind turned to transportation — something guerrilla, preferably open-air — so he went to eBay and typed in “jeep.” Between...

One of the most consistent elements across all three seasons of the Netflix series “Dear White People” has been the music. From Kris Bowers’ unmistakable jazz-infused score to the wide range of musical selections that help punctuate some powerful episode-ending moments, the show has always sounded as good as it looks.
This year, as the show moved confidently on to its Season 3, that meant an entirely new group of songs to help illuminate the many different character changes that dotted the season. As Lionel learned how to become direct in his own pursuits, as Sam struggled with various creative roadblocks, and as Troy wrestled with expectations placed on him at various turns, those evolutions rarely came without something to accent the changes.
In the process, this soundtrack helps put forward the power of context. Whether it’s a beat that samples a ’40s standard, spinning one particular song’s generalizations to a subversive advantage,...

Late Night with Seth Meyers will go into overtime on Thursday, to dive into the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s redacted report earlier that day.
The NBC late night show’s A Closer Look should be something special that night.
In addition, Saturday Night Live cast member Leslie Jones will join Meyers for Game of Jones as the two watch and discuss the latest episode of Game of Thrones together.
“I simply will not stand for the Mueller report bumping Leslie Jones or vice versa, so we decided to make room for both,” Meyers said by way of explaining the welcome program expansion.
Oh, and Meyers’ guest that night: South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who announced his presidential candidacy last Sunday.
Also featured on the show that night, comedian/actress Amy Sedaris and singer Toro Y Moi. Fred Armisen will lead the 8G Band.

When the video for Toro y Moi’s ’50-50′ opens, singer-songwriter Chaz Bear is looking dazed, bleeding from one nostril as he stands on a white-sand dune in the desert. He’s wearing the clothes of a streetwear astronaut, and holding a large balloon-y parachute. Did he just land here? Where’d he come from? Is this all a dream? Ground Control to Major Chaz… Ground Control to Major Chaz…

If you’ve ever wanted to spend a pleasant afternoon just hanging out and vibing with Toro y Moi, his new video for “Ordinary Pleasure” is the next-best thing. The video, which has been seamlessly shot and edited to appear as one smooth take, begins with a walk down the hall of Company Studio, the Oakland arts space run by Toro y Moi, a.k.a. Chaz Bear. The camera enters to find Bear sitting at a piano, jamming on the theme from The Godfather as incense burns. “How’s it going?...

The last time Puff Daddy made a pure, uncut hip-hop album intended for car stereos instead of techno-fried dance floors was back in 2001 – before mixtapes like 50 Cent Is the Future made his big-budget rap albums unfashionable, and before YouTube made his big-budget music videos unnecessary. In those days, before he went by “Diddy,” he was the rap mogul who got Sting to sing about the Notorious B.I.G. on the MTV Video Music Awards, who got Jimmy Page to remake “Kashmir” for a Hollywood Godzilla reboot, whose videos had speedboats and Dennis Hopper.
