Now that awards season has come to an end and the dust has settled, it’s time to reflect on the past 10 or so months. There can only be a select group of actors who walk away with an Academy Award each year. For those who may be disappointed that Lily Gladstone failed to take home the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” fear not. While she may not have won the biggest prize, she still wound up winning awards season.
Gladstone, who has shared the fact they are nonbinary and uses both she/they pronouns, has clearly had a massive breakout year. Let us count the ways here:

With a fresh Leading Actress Oscar nomination for the role of Mollie Kyle in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Lily Gladstone is next set to enter sci-fi territory with upcoming movie The Memory Police—a move that will also reunite her with Scorsese, set to executive produce.
“It’s on an unnamed island at an unnamed place, unnamed time,” Gladstone said of the new film, during a Q&a following a Killers of the Flower Moon screening in LA on Sunday. “So it takes place nowhere and therefore everywhere.”
The Memory Police will be directed by Reed Morano, with a script from Charlie Kaufman, adapted from the Yōko Ogawa novel of the same name.
“The adaptation is done by Charlie Kaufman,” Gladstone continued, “so it’s labeled as a sci-fi, but in the way that [Kaufman’s previous films] Eternal Sunshine [of the Spotless Mind] or Synecdoche [New York] was a sci-fi. It...

Lily Gladstone is single-handedly expanding Indigenous representation in film with two upcoming projects.
The “Killers of the Flower Moon” Oscar nominee narrates and executive produces documentary “Bring Them Home/Aiskótáhkapiyaaya” about the buffalo restoration on the Blackfeet Reservation. The film will premiere at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival on February 24 in Missoula, Montana.
“‘Bring Them Home’ highlights a crucial story of survival; of Iinnii, our Buffalo, of Blackfoot people and our culture, and of the very land which we call home,” Gladstone said in a press statement. “Like the Buffalo, our land does not acknowledge fences, and nor does our changing climate. For the Blackfeet, survival of the Buffalo has always been intrinsically connected to our survival as people — the revitalization of this knowledge is essential for not just us, but for all of us who share this planet, and who work to nurture hope for our collective future.

Exclusive: Lily Gladstone is set to reteam with Morrisa Maltz on Jazzy, a companion piece and follow-up to their acclaimed indie drama The Unknown Country, released by Music Box Films, which brought Gladstone a Gotham Award last fall. In addition to starring, Gladstone will exec produce, along with the team at Duplass Brothers Productions.
While The Unknown Country followed Gladstone’s character — the grieving Tana — on a lonely road trip across America, it also introduced the scene-stealing character of Jazzy, based on and played by Jasmine Bearkiller Shangreaux, a young Oglala Lakota girl growing up in South Dakota. The roles are flipped in Jazzy, with Shangreaux taking center stage and Gladstone supporting her narrative journey. Following a turbulent year marked by dueling industry strikes and the violent contraction–if not yet full pop–of the streaming bubble, 2024 has thus far been pretty good to Hollywood. It certainly helps that we’re in the middle of awards season, which for cineastes amounts to a three-month holiday largely characterized by voluminous binge-watching. And not just binge-watching of the year’s top films. For the curious, the season also offers up a smuggler’s bounty full of talking special post-screening Q&As, roundtables, filmmaker panels, celebratory cocktail receptions and more.
Traditionally Film Independent’s Directors Close-Up series has been a little bit of all of the above, presenting behind-the-scenes insight into the year’s most important works of cinema, straight from the mouths and brains of filmmakers themselves. Tana is in the middle of nowhere. And so are we as we make ourselves comfortable in the passenger seat of this warm road trip movie. Morrisa Maltz’s second feature, The Unknown Country, would’ve been known as a slice-of-life movie in a better world, a world that’s content with the random magic found in fleeting experiences. Grief and hope go alongside Tana’s car as she transcends a profound sense of loss and sees the light at the end of the tunnel.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happens In The Film?
It’s not estrangement, per se, that’s created this overwhelming gap between Tana and her extended Oglala Lakota family. But when loss came at her out of nowhere and she set off on a road trip through the icy South Dakota roads, an invitation to her cousin Lainey’s wedding opened up a whole new world for her to look through.

The final month of the year has arrived, and with it an early Festivus bounty of news (very exciting!) about the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards, which are happening once again on February 25, back on the beach in Santa Monica. Now, the nondenominational secular-humanist Holiday Gnomes have brought us something potentially even more exciting… the nominees!
For the third consecutive year, the Spirit Awards will recognize outstanding achievement in uniqueness of vision, innovation and boldness in TV and streaming in addition to feature film. And for the second year, all acting categories are gender-neutral.
Noms were revealed in a livestream earlier today on Film Independent’s YouTube channel (like and subscribe!) by special guest presenters Joel Kim Booster and Natalie Morales:

“American Fiction,” “May December” and “Past Lives” dominated the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards nominations on Tuesday, picking up five nods apiece. The three movies are all up for best feature, where they will battle it out against “All of Us Strangers,” “Passages” and “We Grown Now.”
The annual honors recognize the best of television, as well as film. “The Last of Us,” a sci-fi epic that was a ratings hit for HBO, and “I’m a Virgo,” an absurdist miniseries from Boots Riley that was produced by Amazon, led the small screen crop, with four nominations each. Only new TV shows that have run for one season and were released between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of this year are eligible for awards. That’s why some big-budgeted fare was deemed eligible or, in the parlance of the show, independent.

‘The Unknown Country’ Review: Lily Gladstone Anchors This Beautiful Road-Trip Through Middle America
In one of the final scenes in writer/director Morrisa Maltz’s debut feature, “The Unknown Country,” the camera tracks the shadow of a moving car, following it as it bends around rocks and trees, constantly moving forward in its anonymity. It’s an apt visual metaphor for this lyrical film, as Lily Gladstone traverses through the country, driving towards some unspoken conclusion.

Just two miles outside of their destination, the Cadillac that star Lily Gladstone was driving for director Morrisa Maltz’s “The Unknown Country” ran out of gas amid a 2,200-mile road trip, the pair recently told IndieWire. And just days before their film was set to be released, SAG-AFTRA went on strike, leaving Gladstone unable to promote the passion project in its homestretch.
“The Unknown Country,” an independent road trip movie that blends documentary and narrative elements to gorgeous and profound effect, is Maltz’s debut feature and is finally hitting theaters Friday after premiering at SXSW 2022. It’s also the type of movie that might struggle to find any sort of wider audience, if not for Gladstone’s involvement.
For months, Gladstone had this week circled on her calendar for promotion. But, per the strike rules laid out by SAG-AFTRA, actors are unable to promote past, present, or future projects produced by struck companies.

There is no unknown country in “The Unknown Country,” a gently meandering road trip through an America that even those of us directly unacquainted have traveled via the movies: Morrisa Maltz’s lovely second feature trades in the familiar imagery of unfettered highways ribboned through the great, grassy middle of nowhere, roadside inns outlined in humming hot-pink neon, gas stations slumped against the sparse landscape like oily oases. It’s the people building their lives along this route, however, that this sociable, inquisitive docufiction seeks to discover, as Maltz profiles the faces flashing by the driver only passing through. A diner hostess, a convenience store clerk, a motel proprietor — here, all get to share their stories beyond the usual scope of road-movie bit parts.
Indeed, for much of the film’s compact running time, we learn more about these foregrounded background figures — playing themselves with generous candor and good humor...

Tana, the compassionate protagonist of The Unknown Country, is asked about her plans at one point in the movie and answers with a slightly embarrassed smile: “Just kinda floatin.’ ” Cut loose from the day-to-day by the death of her grandmother and far from home, Tana might not have a specific itinerary, but, mile by mile in what will turn out to be a 2,000-mile journey, she’s searching, in her guarded way, and open to possibilities. Lily Gladstone inhabits the role with warmth and deep wells of feeling, striking nuanced notes in Tana’s watchful solitude as well as her interactions. The people Tana meets during her travels include characters played by actors and real-life locals playing themselves, and the quiet but stirring effect is a dreamscape of eye-opening geography, existential longing and the enduring workaday.

Following another round of waivers granted by SAG-AFTRA, we have the first one granted that will allow to promote a film rather then shooting a film. Sources confirmed to Deadline that The Unknown Country, which stars Lily Gladstone and Quantum Leap‘s Raymond Lee and opens this Friday, was granted a waiver by the guild allowing for guild members to do publicity for the upcoming film.
SAG also sent an email to any publicist working with talent that they may now resume work with SAG-AFTRA performers, including publicity, which will allow Gladstone and Lee to promote the film before and after the films release on Friday without any ramifications.

Poised for quite a major fall with Martin Scorsese’s stellar Killers of the Flower Moon, Lily Gladstone also leads one of our most recommended films of the summer. Though it premiered at last year’s SXSW festival to strong acclaim, Music Box Films smartly waited until this summer to release The Unknown Country ahead of Scorsese’s epic a few months later. Ahead of a July 28 release, the first trailer and poster have now arrived for Morrisa Maltz’s debut feature.
Here’s the synopsis: “Reeling from a devastating loss, Tana (Lily Gladstone) is pulled back into the world by an unexpected invitation to her cousin’s wedding. She packs up her late grandmother’s Cadillac and hits the open road, driving from her home in Minnesota to South Dakota. Music Box Films has revealed an official trailer for an acclaimed indie drama titled The Unknown Country, made by a filmmaker named Morrisa Maltz. This premiered at last year's SXSW Film Festival, and also played at BAMcinemaFest + the Denver, Montclair, Santa Fe, and Calgary Film Fests. An unexpected invitation sends a grieving woman on a lonely road trip through the American Midwest towards the border between Texas & Mexico. A personal reverie summoned from a beguiling mix of fact & fiction, The Unknown Country is an "arresting" debut from Morrisa Maltz. Described as "a stunning spiritual companion to Terrence Malick and Nomadland." The indie film stars Lily Gladstone as Tana (who also stars in Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon this year), with Raymond Lee and Richard Ray Whitman. Well this looks wonderful. Not only stunning cinematography, following her through America's landscapes,...

It’s an eerie image. Richard Davis stands out in a field, wearing a kevlar vest, and points a pistol into his belly. Then he pulls the trigger, skips back a bit, and checks his red-burned skin. Over the course of his life, he would do this—shoot himself—192 times, proving the efficacy of his life-saving device in the most visceral and operatic way possible.

Beginning with a departure in the dead of night in the middle of winter, and ending perhaps where its lead Tana (Lily Gladstone) was destined to go, Morrisa Maltz’s road trip film The Unknown Country was one of the most exciting offerings at SXSW. In a haunting exploration of biography and geography, Tana traverses a landscape from South Dakota to Texas, along the way stopping to examine lives well-lived as the film enters a quasi-documentary mode. The world proves quite a free place for Tana and we are given delightful, sometimes inspiring, sometimes heartbreaking insights into the people we pass by. They tell us their life stories as Tana flows between hotels, diners, gas stations, beer gardens, and convenience stores.

To deem Morrisa Maltz a spiritual disciple of revered master Terrence Malick may seem too facile a reference. Still, the evident links are all there: she’s from Texas and made a movie that traverses the Badlands of South Dakota for her heroine to get back to “The Lone Star State.” But while the stirring visual fluidity of “The Unknown Country,” her first fiction feature and a kind-hearted triumph, provides further arguments pointing to Malick likely being an influence, what distinguishes Maltz’s approximation to that style of evocatively loose filmmaking is that it’s grounded on the personal victories of real individuals. Based on that, she forges eclectic narrative devices for a tone poem with substantial dramatic meat on its bones.

A grieving young woman takes a road trip in The Unknown Country, a realist drama at SXSW from director Morrisa Maltz. Fans of Nomadland should be well served by this thoughtful film that casts actors alongside real people playing themselves (or thereabouts).
Lily Gladstone (Certain Women) stars as Tana, who’s lost her dear grandmother and is travelling to a wedding in her estranged Oglala Lakota community. Driving from the Midwest toward the Texas-Mexico border, Tana meets a variety of people who share their stories and invite her into their lives for a short while.
One of the first of these is Pam, who runs a diner and tells an extraordinary story about a customer who kept coming in to give her cash, until one day… he didn’t. The film’s postscript makes this story all the more poignant. As Tana continues on her journey, the absence of a...

Many of us have likely had the dream of packing it all in: the modern world, the rat race, the rampant consumerism, and heading to a cabin in the woods, to get as far away from civilization as is possible for anyone who has grown up in the contemporary world. The subject of Morrisa Maltz feature documentary debut, Ingrid, does just that: slowly weans herself off her former life and establishes a proverbial 'room of one's own'. Ingrid Gipson is a German immigrant to the United States, worked as a prominent and successful fashion designer in Texas in the 1980s; she was married twice, and had two children. But something was missing. After buying property in rural Oklahoma, she found herself returning more often to...

The Slamdance Film Festival announced today their narrative and documentary feature film competition for its 24th Festival edition, taking place January 19-25, 2018 in Park City. Established in 1995 by a group of filmmakers whose work had been rejected by the Sundance Film Festival, Slamdance is dedicated to fostering a community for independent emerging artists, fashioning itself “the premiere film festival by filmmakers, for filmmakers.”
The feature competition includes 16 premieres, mostly produced in the U.S. All competition films are feature length directorial debuts with budgets of less than $1 million Usd, and without Us distribution. In addition, the festival announced a new partnership with alumni Anthony and Joe Russo (“Captain America: Civil War,” and “Avengers: Infinity War”) to establish the inaugural Russo Fellowship award. Every participating filmmaker will be eligible for a $25,000 cash prize and mentorship from the Russos in the development of the winner’s next project at the brothers’ Los Angeles studio.
