#TheVillians...Probably Not Who You Were Expecting
I'm honestly running out of ways to say "starring social media influencers" for these articles but welcome again to my coverage of this season of The Amazing Race, now with extra social media influencer action! This is the last episode before the big season finale, the crowning of a new Race winner, and the $1 Million dollar prize that comes with it. Will #Torey continue to dominate? Will Team Rooster Teeth continue their second place winning streak? Will Dana finally consume Matt whole with her rage? Can Team Family Time continue to be true underdogs and move out of last place?
All these questions were answered this episode but the editing took quite a few surprising turns, depicting the teams in a very different way than we've seen them all season. For starters, the teams' first task is to fly to Shenzhen, China to search for their next clue.

A note on "Amazing Race" travel: If there are two flights to a location getting in an hour or two apart in the mid-morning or early afternoon, it's probably acceptable to worry if you're on the later flight. Those people ahead of you have a solid advantage and if they don't screw up, your chances of moving ahead of them are remote, though probably not nil. If, however, there are two flights to a location getting in an hour or two apart late at night, chances are reasonably good that you won't need to sweat it. Yes, there's always the chance, especially if the destination city is considered a night-life hot-spot, that your next task could be at a bar or club -- i.e. Sri Lanka last season -- but precedent suggests you're more likely to follow your clue to a sign telling you to have an unpleasant night's...

This happens every year, so I should stop complaining about it. Every year, it seems that "The Amazing Race" manages to start one week ahead of the Oscars, so it's one ordinary week of recapping responsibilities and then... Bam... An evening spent covering the Academy Awards, followed by a late-night "Amazing Race" recap. All that means is that I already had most of my soul slurped from my brain by Ellen DeGeneres taking selfies and ordering pizza, John Travolta bumbling Idina Menzel's name, the discovery that Kim Novak is still alive, various "12 Years a Slave" people forgetting to thank each other, Matthew McConaughey's three rules to live by and other bits of Oscar silliness. I'm sleepy. However, it was an eventful episode of "The Amazing Race" and even if it wasn't a perfect episode, some pretty big things happen and those things need to be discussed, so I'm...

Don't expect any enlightenment from my exit interview with "Amazing Race" winners Bates & Anthony Battaglia. The hockey-playing brothers, who won five Legs during this season's Race, were easily the most physically dominant team on the course and they were able to overcome a few mental blunders, including Anthony's ongoing struggles identifying chartreuse jelly at a Detour in Belfast. They also won fans with their goofy, self-deprecating humor. If you like that kind of thing, there's a lot of that goofiness in this interview, which led me to suggest that the guys possibly may have had a late night...

The Amazing Race Review, Season 22, Episode 11
“Beacon of Hope”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
When evaluating the cast of each Amazing Race season, it’s easy to look at two strong guys and expect them to blow through the race. When this pair includes professional athletes, that chance seems even greater. The interesting part is that physical competitors frequently go out early. They could be poor navigators, struggle with intricate tasks, or just hit a run of bad luck. When an imposing team does get it together, the results can be predictable. Max and Katie won three straight legs heading into the finals, but it still feels like Bates and Anthony’s race to lose. They succeeded by following other teams and then rolling on the challenges. That’s hardly a bad strategy if they follow the right people (they did). Even with a few hiccups, the hockey...

A two-hour season finale whittled the remaining four teams down to one winner on "The Amazing Race." The first hour saw the teams in Scotland and Northern Ireland where they got to swim in an Irish bog, and in the Detour choose between spray painting graffiti on a wall or serving a 5-course meal at the site where the Titanic was built.
At the end of this leg, which saw the teams close competitors, no single thing doomed Caroline & Jennifer. They were just the team that came up short on the mat.
The final leg carried the teams through England before flying off to Washington, DC. At the Capitol, Mona & Beth decided they knew better than the clue, which told them to go to 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue to get their picture taken with the President. It was actually a CG trick, but they determined that they should probably go to the...

Amazing Race 22 Bates & Anthony Battaglia won the show in finale episode tonight. Tonight's 2-hour finale episode, kicked off with the final teams, learning they had to go to Belfast,Northern Island. Then head to a park to get their first clue for this leg of the race. Once they retrieved that first clue, they ran into a Road Block. In it, they had to go Bog Snorkelling ,which required them to swim a couple of laps through muddy, nasty water in 4 minutes to get their next clue. After that, they had to head back to Belfast and search for "that thing with a ring" to get their next clue. Once they found it,they ran into their detours: "Tray It," or "Spray It." In the "Tray It" detour, the teams had to correctly serve 5 courses of meals that were actually served on the Titanic, to get their next clue. In the "Spray It" detour,...

"The Amazing Race" came down to the wire but hockey brothers Bates and Anthony Battaglia clinched the win.
The fan favorite brothers edged out newlyweds Max and Katie Bichler. Roller-derby moms Mona Egender and Beth Bandimere finished third.
Friends and country singers Caroline Cutbirth and Jennifer Kuhle were eliminated before the final stretch in Washington D.C.
The finale was especially bittersweet for father and son cancer survivors Dave and Connor O'Leary, who were forced to quit this year's race due to an injury Dave sustained. They joined the other eliminated teams at the finish line to cheer on Bates and Anthony.
The Battaglias led our poll for who deserved to win, so we're guessing there are a lot of happy "Amazing Race" fans out there. What did you think of the finale and the season overall?...

“Working Our Barrels Off”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
This week’s Amazing Race splits the five remaining teams into two separate groups and forces one to scramble to avoid elimination. The interesting part is how they end up divided by several hours during the jaunt through Scotland. The leg begins with the warning that a U-Turn will be ahead, but that plays only a minor role in the ultimate outcome. Instead, it’s the lack of diligence from Joey and Meghan and the roller derby moms that pushes them to the back of the pack. After grabbing what’s apparently the best flight, they celebrate and prepare to grab the top two spots. This type of error happens nearly every season, and it’s easy to understand why they feel complacent enough not to look for better options. The saving grace...

The final five teams raced through Scotland this week doing everything from blowing bagpipes, pushing barrels and preparing haggis. In ?Working Our Barrels Off,? the big story was the alliances that continued to form heading into next week?s season finale. Caroline and Jennifer, Max and Katie, and Bates and Anthony all joined together to U-Turn the two weakest teams. Bates/Anthony and Caroline/Jennifer turned to the dark side this week and aligned themselves with the newlyweds. Will it turn out to bite them in the butt later?

“The Ultimate Fun House”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
This week’s action-packed episode of The Amazing Race reveals the best and worst aspects of the current incarnation of this long-running show. After 22 seasons, it’s impressive to see challenges that still feel creative and exciting for devoted fans. On the other hand, there are warning signs that the producers are drawing the wrong conclusions from the consistent success. They seem convinced the audience is fascinated by the showmance between the hockey players and Caroline and Jennifer. While mentioning it is fine, repeating the same types of conversations feels unnecessary when so much is happening in the competition. Even if they make the finals and are competing directly for the million, the story isn’t going anywhere. A much bigger moment has Bates waking up on the train to Dresden, Germany and...

“My Cheese Is Out of Control”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
The challenge when analyzing teams on The Amazing Race is realizing that survival is all that truly matters. Pairs have bumbled their way across the globe but ended up winning it all because they never finished last. The latest players to fit this description are Chuck and Wynona, who have remained near the back of the pack throughout this season. Even when they’ve finished higher, it’s been the result of struggles from other teams. This week, their luck finally runs out because of a penalty at the mat. The amazing thing is that they almost survive once again. When an exhausted Joey and Meghan struggle to find the Pit Stop, it gives the Alabama couple another shot to grab a life boat. This time, they aren’t so lucky and face an unfortunate exit.

Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
In some of its best seasons, Survivor thrives on making its strong competitors look silly. Players talk about being in control and running the show, then they’re immediately booted by the “weaker” contestants. This trend rarely happens on The Amazing Race, which frequently has teams dominate the seasons. There are notable exceptions like the Beekmans’ win last season, but it isn’t uncommon to watch a team roll through challenges and stay near the top of the pack. The audience believes the smart and physically capable players will do well, especially in the race’s first half. Those expectations have been thrown out the window in the 22nd installment. This week’s Amazing Race opens with an apology for insensitivity towards Vietnam veterans in last week’s episode. Phil’s statement is a response to an outcry led by Fox News that included calls to boycott the series. While those claims seem over the top, it spotlights a challenge for a show that’s moving so quickly through other cultures. A downed B-52 bomber was used as the backdrop for a clue, and a goofy song described the wonders of socialism. The current version of this competition plays out so quickly and rarely takes a breath to consider whether it’s cheapening the countries on display. This standard may be unfair for a reality competition, but that’s the challenge for a show that’s using aspects of these locations. While the apology is understandable,...

When 58-year-old David O’Leary apparently ruptured his Achilles tendon at the end of last week’s leg, his quick departure felt certain. How could he possibly continue? The guy is in excellent shape, but this type of injury is no joke. The Amazing Race requires great stamina and speed, and there’s little chance he can skip every physical challenge. This week, the doctors confirm that David ruptured his Achilles and the muscle around it, so they seem doomed. However, crutches and a walking boot allow him to continue. They’re living on borrowed time, but it’s remarkable they can even keep going. John and Jessica help out with the Express Pass, which sends them first to the mat. “Loose Lips Sink Ships”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
When did taking the penalty become so common on The Amazing Race? Two episodes into this season, players seem very interested in avoiding tasks. Idries and Jamil barely slip into the water and they’re ready to take a six-hour penalty. Their fear of water and limited swimming abilities make diving for pearls nearly impossible. While their struggles are understandable, they seem far too willing to give up right away. They eventually give the Detour a shot, but it’s their passive approach that raises warning signs. By the time they switch to the other option, the gap is too large. Apparently, picking them to win the race was not a wise idea. They’re hardly the only players who struggle, however. Three teams took a penalty last week, and several others grumble through this leg.
