We may not ever get a Scarlett Johansson lead Black Widow stand-alone film, but we it looks like we are getting the closest thing to with Jennifer Lawrence.
We have been waiting for a Black Widow film since she first showed up in Iron Man 2. We will probably continue to wait for it, but we are getting the next best thing. Nearly the same story, just outside of the McU, and starring Jennifer Lawrence, as Fox has released the first trailer for Red Sparrow. Check it out below.

Jennifer Lawrence in on a roll. On the heels of her press tour for the film Mother, the actress appeared in a new trailer for an upcoming film called Red Sparrow—based on the book by Jason Matthews. Here's a summary of the film based on its YouTube description: After suffering an injury, Lawrence's character Dominika Egorova is forced to end her career as a ballerina. With her and her mother now facing an unclear future, she is manipulated into joining the Sparrow School—a Russian spy agency that trains people how to use their bodies, trickery and sex appeal to operate. "Young officers train to seduce and manipulate, to use their bodies, to use everything," a...

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for Jennifer Lawrence's new assassin spy thriller Red Sparrow. The film is based on the novel written by Jason Matthews and looks like it's going to be an amazing movie! I saw the first footage of the film earlier this year at CinemaCon and I loved what I saw. Today's trailer for the film just gives us a little taste of that, but it's definitely enough to spark your interest and get you excited.
The story follows a young promising ballerina who is injured. After the injury ends her career she is recruited into the Red Sparrow school where she is trained to be a deadly spy and assassin. This is going to be one hell of an intense movie!

Jennifer Lawrence has stumbled into a new role that looks anything but clumsy, quirky and relatable — think somewhere between Eyes Wide Shut, Black Swan, and The Americans. 20th Century Fox revealed its first look at Red Sparrow on Thursday at Cinemacon, the annual gathering of movie theater owners and Hollywood studios, and if sexual intensity is what you want, put down the Fifty Shades Darker DVD and listen up.
Based on the trilogy of novels from former CIA agent Jason Matthews, Red Sparrow is directed by Hunger Games: Mockingjay helmer Francis Lawrence, who's re-teaming with Lawrence for something a little less "young" and a little more "adult." From the first-look trailer we just saw in Las Vegas: Dominika Egorova (Lawrence) is a brilliant young ballerina who suffers a gnarly leg break.

Best In Show for CinemaCon 2017 goes to Twentieth Century Fox, which closed out its presentation with a full-throttle Hugh Jackman seduction in honor of his P.T. Barnum biopic, “The Greatest Showman,” which will be released Christmas Day.
Jackman turned on his Broadway charm for the exhibitors, walking them through the passion-project original musical directed by newcomer Michael Gracey. There was extended footage from the film (complete with music by Oscar-winning “La La Land” lyricists Justin Paul and Benj Pasek), which stars Jackman as Barnum, Michelle Williams as Barnum’s rags-to-riches wife, and Zac Efron as an acrobat who soars through the air with the greatest of ease. And then there were the audience members/Fox employees who brought it home by singing and dancing in the aisles.

Jennifer Lawrence will bring Joel Edgerton in from the cold in the upcoming thriller, Red Sparrow.
Red Sparrow, the upcoming espionage thriller from The Hunger Games franchise filmmaker Francis Lawrence, has rounded out its lead roles. Academy Award winning actress Jennifer Lawrence will be playing a trained seductress and Joel Edgerton will be taking the male lead.
Lawrence will be playing state intelligence officer Dominika Egorova, who has been coerced into being trained as a 'Sparrow', which is the spy term for seductress. Edgerton will play a young CIA agent who handles the Agency’s most important Russian mole.
Red Sparrow is based on the spy novel by Jason Matthews. The first draft of the screenplay was written by Eric Warren (American Hustle). It was been re-written by Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road).
It's set in modern-day Russia where Dominika has infiltrated the intelligence community as a CIA double agent.

At the time, I mentioned that it would be a while until things were finalized, and now it looks like casting is finally falling into place. While it came as no surprise to hear that Jennifer Lawrence would be taking the lead role in the upcoming thriller Red Sparrow – directed by Hunger Games franchise filmmaker Francis Lawrence – a new, interesting turn of events sees Joel Edgerton circling the position of male lead in that film. "The Hunger Games" sequel director Francis Lawrence is reportedly eyeing the spy thriller film "Red Sparrow" as his next directorial effort.
Based on the Jason Matthews novel and set in contemporary Russia, the story follows a female state intelligence officer drafted against her will to become a 'Sparrow,' a trained seductress in the service. She is soon assigned a first-tour CIA officer who handles the agency's most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence.
The two young officers collide in a charged atmosphere of deception and sexual attraction. She then seeks revenge against her soulless masters, whilst helping the CIA to ferret out a high-level traitor in Washington.

According to Deadline, it's still early days and Singer has yet to adapt the book, meaning it will probably still be finished long before they get started on a Dragon Tattoo sequel. As fantastic as it was, David Fincher’s jet-black adaptation of the Stieg Larsson bestseller The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, which earned star Rooney Mara an Oscar nomination for her role as hacker Lisbeth Salander, doesn’t appear to be getting a sequel anytime soon. Andrew Kevin Walker is still writing the script (so far as we know) and Fincher has reportedly killed talks that he’ll direct, which might mean that we’ll all be better off if The Girl Who Played With Fire never ends up hitting theaters anyway.
However, just because that series hasn’t panned out, that doesn’t mean Fincher and Mara are done working together. The director and actress are reportedly circling Red Sparrow, a spy thriller that’s being adapted by American Hustle screenwriter Eric Singer from a book by Jason Matthews.

While the sequel to “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” may not be moving forward any time soon (read, ever), bffs David Fincher and Rooney Mara have found a way to move forward together. But this time, it’s an entirely different project. The director and actress are circling “Red Sparrow,” an espionage book that’s being adapted by Eric Singer, the screenwriter of “American Hustle.” 20th Century Fox, who are distributing Fincher’s next film, “Gone Girl,” are currently in talks with Singer to adapt the spy thriller by Jason Matthews. It would be at a familiar home too; Steve Zaillian’s Film Rites is one of the producers and Zaillian obviously wrote “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” and the sequel that stalled out at Sony. With his biblical epic Noah now in postproduction, celebrated director Darren Aronofsky is readying for a follow-up, but the 20th Century Fox spy thriller Red Sparrow has been dropped from his dance card. THR reports that after months of negotiations on the in-development thriller, Aronofsky has walked away from the table. He's now looking elsewhere for his next project. Despite this setback, Fox is still enthusiastic about Red Sparrow. A former ballerina whose career ambitions were smashed with a fateful injury, she is now a "sparrow," an intelligence officer working for President Vladimir Putin. Darren Aronofsky will no longer direct Red Sparrow for 20th Century Fox. According to source, the negotiations fell through, and the director is moving on.
Based on the spy-thriller by Jason Matthews, the book is officially described as follows:
In present-day Russia, ruled by blue-eyed, unblinking President Vladimir Putin, Russian intelligence officer Dominika Egorova struggles to survive in the post-Soviet intelligence jungle. Ordered against her will to become a “Sparrow,” a trained seductress, Dominika is assigned to operate against Nathaniel Nash, a young CIA officer who handles the Agency’s most important Russian mole.
As the action careens between Russia, Finland, Greece, Italy, and the United States, Dominika and Nate soon collide in a duel of wills, tradecraft, and—inevitably—forbidden passion that threatens not just their lives but those of others as well. As secret allegiances are made and broken, Dominika and Nate’s game reaches a deadly crossroads.

Back in August we reported that Darren Aronofsky had briefly emerged from deep in Noah's post-production to attach himself to Fox's spy thriller Red Sparrow. Disappointingly, however, the director has now given up on the negotiations, and will not be behind the cameras on the Peter Chernin-produced project after all. He'll have to find something else to occupy his post-Noah attention, although we don't imagine his drawer of potential future scripts is empty.Fox bought Jason Matthews’ novel last spring, snatching the rights after a bidding war against several other studios.
