Exclusive: 2022 finalists for the Latinx List, showcasing top works by up-and-coming Latinx screenwriters, have been unveiled by The Latin Tracking Board, Nalip, the Untitled Latinx Project, and The Black List.
The batch of selected scripts consists of five original pilots and six original features. Among the finalists are Daniel F. Pérez (2096) and Makana Lani (Contingent), who have received WGA-minimum script deals from Netflix, through the Latinx List’s partnership with the streamer announced last summer.
“By providing this opportunity, the Latinx List is kicking the door wide open for emerging writers, and I’m humbled to be selected among such talented creatives,” said Lani. “As a queer, underrepresented writer, I’m thrilled to be writing a script for Netflix–a company that’s truly following through on their mission of championing diverse voices.”
“I’m thrilled that 2096 is part of this year’s Latinx List, and so excited to develop with Netflix!

In 2016, Esteban Arango enrolled in Hola Mexico Film Festival’s mentorship program, Tomorrow’s Filmmakers Today, with a short film — a coming-of-ager about two brothers from Colombia who love metal music and feel disillusioned by the American dream. Arango and his co-writer, Erick Castrillon, needed guidance on adapting the piece into a full-length project, and the pair found that support in the program. “Blast Beat” had its premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and is available on Hulu. Now, Arango returns to Hola Mexico (which takes place in Los Angeles through Sept. 25) for a special screening of the film on Sept. 23.
“I always thought that the movies that Hollywood put out about Latino experience were victimizing. We were always portrayed in negative ways,” says Arango, who is based in L.A. “So the most positive thing that came from [Tomorrow’s Filmmakers Today] has been creating that community of filmmakers sharing this journey with you.

Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Arango moved to South Florida with his mother and brother when he was 14, a cultural shift that directly informed his debut feature, the Sundance-bound “Blast Beat.” (The film is inspired by his 2015 short of the same name.) With that project, which features Colombian-American brothers (and former Disney Channel stars) Mateo and Moisés Arias as siblings, Arango wanted to correct a problem he found in Hollywood-produced Latino narratives.
“There were stereotypes in those stories that I didn’t associate myself with: the violence, the drug trafficking,” Arango says. “You would see movies that reference Colombia, and it would look like the jungle. It’s far from the truth. I wanted to tell stories that felt cinematic, sophisticated and fun, where it’s not about underprivileged characters from Latin America, but the opposite: [people] with complex personalities and cool taste.”

In the post-“Crazy Rich Asians” and “The Good Doctor” era, trawling Asia for new IP to bring to Hollywood has gone from being an “esoteric pursuit” to a “mad scramble,” actor and producer Daniel Dae Kim told Variety on the sidelines of the Asia Society’s U.S.-Asia Entertainment Summit, which took place Tuesday, on the eve of the Afm.
Kim’s own production company, 3Ad, has about 20 projects at various stages of development for both TV and film. A few of its properties are from Korea, and one was originally a Japanese manga. A few originated as stage plays, while others were books.
“It’s kind of anywhere and everywhere,” Kim told Variety. “Nowadays a good story is told in many different places. Everyone’s looking for that story now that’s going to cross borders, and I think we can find it.”

Latino audiences have the highest moviegoing rate in the Us, but make up only a 5.2% share of all film roles, and The Black List — the annual survey of Hollywood executives’ favorite unproduced screenplays — wants to do something about that.
The Black List has partnered with The Latin Tracking Board, Mijente, Nalip, The Nathan Cummings Foundation, Remezcla, and UnidosUS to launch The Latinx List, a curated list of promising screenplays written by Latinx writers that explore the Latinx experience.
The Latinx List will include the same caliber of screenwriting that The Black List has become known for, telling the kinds of stories that all participating organizations would like to see onscreen.
“The last two years have cast many of the consequences of a movie industry that doesn’t look like the country or the world into sharp relief,” said Franklin Leonard, founder of The Black List. “The scripts on the Latinx...
