Stephen Karam’s 2016 Tony-winning play The Humans has been hailed by critics for holding a great mirror to New York City’s hard-scrabble inhabitants in the wake of 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy. However, the A24 film version, Karam’s feature directorial debut, arrives in theaters and on Showtime at an intriguing time, taking on an additional level of significance during a global pandemic.
Karam was joined by stars Richard Jenkins, Amy Schumer and Jayne Houdyshell on a panel for the film Saturday at Deadline’s Contenders Film: New York showcase.
The Humans follows Erik Blake (Jenkins), who has gathered three generations of his Pennsylvania family to celebrate Thanksgiving at his daughter Brigid’s (Beanie Feldstein) apartment in lower Manhattan. As darkness falls outside and eerie things start to go bump in the night, the group’s deepest fears are laid bare. Houdyshell, who played Erik’s wife Deidre onstage, reprises her Tony-winning role here,...

The third time might be the charm for Richard Jenkins, a two-time Oscar nominee who is the current front-runner to win Best Supporting Actor for “The Humans,” according to the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby readers. This comes as momentum starts to shift between two actors from another film, “The Power of the Dog.”
Jenkins gets leading odds of 5/1, with eight of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed betting on him to win: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Matthew Jacobs, Susan King (Gold Derby), Michael Musto (Queerty), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby).

Among the most anticipated November releases for awards watchers is “The Humans,” Stephen Karam’s theatrical adaptation of his Tony Award-winning play with an all-star cast that includes Richard Jenkins, Steven Yeun, Amy Schumer, Beanie Feldstein, June Squibb, and Jayne Houdyshell, who reprises her Tony Award-winning role from the stage. On Friday, A24 released the first trailer for “The Humans” after its successful debut at the Toronto International Film Festival with a bit of news attached: in addition to a theatrical debut on November 24, “The Humans” will also premiere on Showtime on the same date.
The timing is fitting for the film, which focuses on a family gathering for Thanksgiving in a crumbling New York City apartment building. Here’s the official synopsis: “Erik Blake (Jenkins) has gathered three generations of his Pennsylvania family to celebrate Thanksgiving at his daughter’s apartment in lower Manhattan. If you knew nothing about “The Humans” aside from the title and the first 30 seconds of its just-released official trailer, you might think it’s a horror film.
“I keep seeing these ads for that zombie show on TV,” a woman’s voice says. “It’s awful. I can’t believe people want to watch that kind of stuff at night. There’s enough going on in the real world to give me the creeps.”
Cut to Brigid (Beanie Feldstein) telling her dad, Erik (Richard Jenkins), to lean closer to the window because he can’t get cellphone reception.
Seems ominous, right?
Even the official description of the film, based on Stephen Karam’s Tony-winning 2015 play, hints at some supernatural situations: Erik Blake has gathered three generations of his Pennsylvania family to celebrate Thanksgiving at his daughter’s apartment in lower Manhattan. Fresh off strong reviews out of the Toronto International Film Festival, A24 has debuted the official trailer for Stephen Karam’s “The Humans.” The film marks Karam’s directorial debut and is an adaptation of his Tony-winning play of the same name. Richard Jenkins, Jayne Houdyshell, Amy Schumer, Beanie Feldstein, Steven Yeun, and June Squibb star in this isolated chamber piece about a family come undone over Thanksgiving dinner. Houdyshell is the sole holdover from the original Broadway cast, and she won a Tony for her performance on stage.
The official synopsis for “The Humans” from A24 reads: “Erik Blake has gathered three generations of his Pennsylvania family to celebrate Thanksgiving at his daughter’s apartment in lower Manhattan. As darkness falls outside and eerie things start to go bump in the night, the group’s deepest fears are laid bare. Haunting and piercingly funny, The Humans explores the hidden...

Every film made in response to 9/11 is a horror film in one way or another, but none of them — from the unbearable simulation of “United 93” to the eerie found footage of “Cloverfield” and the chilling-that-this-was-nominated-for-Best-Picture-ness of “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” — have spoken the genre’s common tongue more fluently than “The Humans.” And yet, for a movie which opens with a thunderous jump-scare that it follows with another solid jolt every few minutes before ending with the year’s most pitch-black sequence of pure terror, the biggest shock of all might be that Stephen Karam’s debut feature is so conventionally scary in the first place.
A prestigious screen adaptation of a Tony-winning play is just not the sort of thing that one expects to watch between their fingers, even if it stars legendary scream queens [checks notes] Beanie Feldstein, Amy Schumer, and… June Squibb? Indeed, even those familiar with...

The threat of impermanence or, looking at it another way, the threat of unfulfillment’s permanence, hovers like a cloud over the Blake family Thanksgiving dinner that makes up the running time of writer-director Stephen Karam’s “The Humans.”
The title of Karam’s Pulitzer Prize–winning play is curiously bold and blasé, like words you’d see in an elegant font on a stand next to a zoo exhibit. But over the course of a three-generation, six-person get-together in a mostly unfurnished, ghostly New York apartment, Karam’s characters reveal what is edgily real about modern existence and what’s eternal about trying to survive it.
Karam makes his directorial debut adapting his widely acclaimed work, and it’s not surprising he’s assembled a formidable cast: Jayne Houdyshell, Amy Schumer, Beanie Feldstein and Oscar nominees Richard Jenkins, June Squibb and Steven Yeun. He’s also done his utmost...
