★☆☆☆☆ Johnny Depp continues his descent into self-parody with the mawkish and turgid caper Mortdecai (2015) from director David Koepp. Based on Kyril Bonfiglioli's 1970's comic novels, it follows the misadventures of the dodgy art dealer Charlie Mortdecai. He is a buffoonish British aristocrat who gives dear Johnny plenty of scope to up-the-ante on his long list of insufferably tiresome character performances. Like the Mad Hatter, Jack Sparrow and Willy Wonka before, he seems all too at home with the eccentricities of the role; complete with plummy British accent, twittering facial whiskers, and nods to the films Peter Sellers, Ronald Neame's Gambit (1966) and its 2012 remake.

Mortdecai is ultimately a film held down by not knowing what it’s after. That means the film is planted firmly in the realm of being a theoretical failure, and you don’t overcome that easily. It’s either too silly,or not silly enough, and it seems a shame, because you’ve got a lot of talent here, and you have to guess that the novel (by Kyril Bonfiglioli) is brilliant.
Johnny Depp stars as Mortdecai, a difficult character to describe, largely because of the confusing aim. He’s got pieces of Clouseau in him, but he’s on the wrong side of the law, and his comedy draws far too much from his cleverness. He drops references in unusual circumstances that belie his education and upbringing, but he has a definite streak of foppishness to him as well, and at times he seems to be just plain idiotic.

Mortdecai
Written by Eric Aronson
Directed by David Koepp
USA, 2015
Seemingly late in the game of David Koepp’s Mortdecai, the eponymous character (played by Johnny Depp) asks his wife, “Are you quite finished with your barrage of insults?” It’s an apt question for the film itself, a cataclysmically unfunny, unbelievably tedious disaster of baffling misjudgments and multiple career lows that feels as long as Shoah, and only a little less harrowing. No such luck, though, as the film goes on for another 25 minutes. It then ends on people about to throw up. Also apt.
Lord Charlie Mortdecai (Depp, in a career low as both actor and one of the film’s producers) is an eccentric English art dealer and “part time rogue”, and the sort of whimsical, foppish figure who refers to America as “the Colonies”. (This film is apparently set in the present day.) He’s in...

Final Update, Sunday Am: Warner Bros. is reporting that American Sniper will raise its domestic cume to $200.1M through Sunday after a massive $64.4M weekened at 3,705 theaters, the third-highest weekend ever in January, behind Sniper’s opening last weekend, and Avatar’s third Fss of $68.5M.
That figure, should it hold into tomorrow, marks a mere 28-percent slip – the best second-week hold for a wide release ever for a film that debuted with more than $85M. Previous to this, the best big debuts to hold an audience were 2004’s Shrek 2 (down 33 percent in its second frame) and 2002’s Spider-Man (down 38 percent). American Sniper is marching toward $300M, a mark only six Warner Bros. films have passed.
“Many exhibitors are hearing from their theater managers that the infrequent moviegoers who go only two to three times a year, are coming out to see this movie,” said Warner Bros. distribution chief Dan Fellman.

Chicago – I have to say while watching Johnny Depp in “Mortdecai,” I found myself amused. I rarely elicited anything more than a slight chuckle, but its indomitable spirit of silliness made it a not entirely unpleasant evening out.
This feather-weight trifle of a caper is only slightly more than the funny mustache movie its posters and trailer make it out to be.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Depp as Mortdecai comes across as sort of a randier Austin Powers, with more of a roguish rascal aura about him. Based on a character from a series of novels in the 1970’s by the late Kyril Bonfiglioli, Mortdecai is another in a long line of upper class British bumblers. He has all the upper class affectations of the aristocracy with none of the brains. While the film delves deeply into bathroom, breasts and boner humor, the spirit of the character wouldn’t be entirely out of...

Johnny Depp likes to play dress-up and try on funny accents, so Mortdecai—based on Kyril Bonfiglioli’s 1973 novel, Don’t Point That Thing at Me—just might be the actor's idea of heaven. He plays Charlie Mortdecai, a foppish bon-vivant with a dashing archaic wardrobe and a Poirot-style mustache that is testing his marriage to the splendidly delightful (and manipulative) Johanna (Gwyneth Paltrow). Mortdecai dabbles in expensive art smuggling, but his good fortune has run out: he owes the British government millions. To get out of the hole, he reluctantly pairs up with an old classmate (Ewan McGregor) now...

There is nothing less cool than a person trying to act like they are cool – and it’s not that much different in comedy. A comic performance embellished for maximum mugging and silliness may come off with the exact opposite reaction that was intended. An actor trying to pretend like they are funny without offering a natural knack for wit or tickled charm comes off as deeply unfunny. Case in point: Johnny Depp’s hideously off-key portrayal of an English aristocrat and art dealer in Mortdecai, a globe-trotting comedy of sorts from director David Koepp.
The international locales, A-list ensemble, frantic running gags and trumpet-filled score makes Mortdecai resemble a James Bond parody, like 1967’s Casino Royale or any of the Austin Powers films. What the film sorely lacks is a distinct comedic vibe – or, dare one say it, a mojo? – to keep both the tone consistent atop the rapid-fire jokes.

<< Continued from "'Sniper' to Easily Fight Off Weak Competition This Weekend"Opening at 2,648 locations, Mortdecai will likely be Johnny Depp's latest misfire at the domestic box office. He stars as the title character, a "debonair art dealer and part time rogue" who goes on a mission to recover a stolen painting.Marketing has positioned the movie as a broad slapstick comedy, and there's been a heavy emphasis placed on Mortdecai's silly-looking mustache. That includes a series of posters that feature each of the main stars, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Olivia Munn, wearing a similar mustache. While this quirky choice has helped differentiate the movie, it seems too slight to really translate in to ticket sales. In general, this is a pretty odd project. It's adapted from a series of novels by British author Kyril Bonfiglioli, which were originally published in the 1970s; while they surely have some fans,...

Mortdecai director David Koepp chats to us about the film, along with Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, Mission: Impossible & more.
This piece contains spoilers for Snake Eyes and Mission: Impossible (the first one)
David Koepp has a rather solid CV as a director, including Secret Window with Johnny Depp, the underrated ghost story Stir Of Echoes, and the really fun Joseph Gordon-Levitt bike messenger action film Premium Rush. But as a screenwriter, he’s worked on some of the biggest films of the last 25 years – Jurassic Park and its sequel, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Angels and Demons, Mission: Impossible, and Spider-Man.
He’s also had a hand in other notable Hollywood hits (and flops) including Carlito’s Way, The Shadow, Snake Eyes, Zathura, Panic Room, Death Becomes Her, and many, many more. He’s had a fascinating career.

Since going mainstream in Pirates of the Caribbean, Johnny Depp has trawled for laughs with mixed results in big-budget fare like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Dark Shadows and The Lone Ranger. The costume and make-up department has become ever more important in the process of transformation, and his ostentatious 'tache is even a running joke in knockabout caper Mortdecai. This is the last straw.
Depp is a gifted comic actor and the character of Charles Mortdecai, an eccentric art dealer (created by novelist Kyril Bonfiglioli), benefits from his particular brand of effete charm, but this is a performance formed entirely of mannerisms.
The comedy is broad and rather brash, except for Mortdecai's elaborate turn of phrase, peppered with twee English exclamations of "I say," "old boy" and...

Desperately seeking a “pretty movie stars chase art treasures in world capitals” vibe, this goofy soufflé ultimately falls flat
I admit to being a big fan of watching glamorous movie stars gadding around world capitols in the comedic pursuit of art treasures; I spent countless hours glued to the TV as a kid soaking in comic soufflés like “Charade” and “How to Steal a Million,” and I’ll even defend the much-maligned “Hudson Hawk” for its efforts to keep the genre alive in our modern, cynical era.

In the film, Depp stars in the titular role of Charles Mortdecai, a debonair (albeit dimwitted) art dealer, who must travel the globe to recover a stolen painting. The piece of art in question is rumored to be linked to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold. The character is from the 1970s book anthology The Mortdecai Trilogy by Kyril Bonfiglioli.

"What is that infernal thing on your lip?" If you think Johnny Depp looks terrible in the new rogue comedy Mortdecai, you're not the only one. Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor both hate the actor's mustache in the new trailer from the United Kingdom. Of course, by the looks of this trailer (and the previous Us theatrical trailer), it's not just the mustache that's a turn-off. This doesn't look funny at all. This feels like something that was actually imported from across the pond and just doesn't work over here. It's dry, but not in an appealing way. It would be nice if Johnny Depp did something worthwhile again. Watch! There have been plenty of bumbling crime-fighters throughout the years. Pink Panther, Johnny English, Oss 117, Frank Drebin. All are respected for being ridiculous while still, somehow, saving the day. And now there’s Johnny Depp as Charlie Mortdecai — filling out the cult figure from the 1970s Kyril Bonfiglioli books with far better names than this movie got. (Seriously, would you rather go see Don’t Point That Thing At Me or Mortdecai? Exactly.) The trailer offers a classic comic take on the absurd police figure. Guaranteed Depp’s character gets locked out of a building without his pants. It’s that kind of movie. Mortdecai is in theaters January 23rd.

Much like his man turned machine in Transcendence, Johnny Depp is everywhere, popping up in Kevin Smith movies, big overwrought blockbusters, flashy musicals, and now an action-comedy called Mortdecai. In the trailer above you can get the flavor of this farce that has Depp playing the titular sophisticate with an eye toward crime and an impossible mustache. Based on Kyril Bonfiglioli's novels, Mortdecai follows Charles Mortdecai (Depp) on a quest to track down a stolen Francisco Goya painting that might be linked to a treasure trove of Nazi gold. According to the Yahoo trailer up top, this work of art might be sold to fund nefarious causes, and so they call in not a secret agent or spy but an art dealer named Mortdecai. He's a goofy aristocrat with a beautiful and demanding wife (Gwyneth Paltrow) and a bodyguard/man servant named Jock Strapp (Paul Bettany). But though this...

Based on the beloved novels by Kyril Bonfiglioli – namely Don't Point That Thing At Me, After You With A Pistol, Something Nasty In The Woodshed and The Great Moustache Mystery -– Mortdecai is a right royal romp of the highest order, with Depp surrounded by Paul Bettany as his valet, Jock, Gwyneth Paltrow as his wife Joanna, Ewan McGregor as an intelligence official looking to recruit Mortdecai to recover a stolen painting and Olivia Munn as a wealthy American with designs on our hero. Preposterous hamminess, ahoy! Yes, it’s Mortdecai, the decade’s cult classic to-be, landing with four new, moustachioed character posters. If you ever wondered what Gwyneth Paltrow looks like with a moustache – and, frankly, who hasn’t? – just hover your cursor over the strange-looking man with the blond hair below and click. With Johnny Depp in the title role and adapted from Kyril Bonfiglioli’s The Mortdecai Trilogy, the comedy-thriller looks like a goofy but goodhearted caper that shares some DNA with Charade, The Thin Man and Harry Enfield’s Playboys. Depp’s titular art dealer is thrown into a deadly world of raging Russians, lethal terrorists and MI5 agents, with only his wife (Paltrow) and a vast reserve of bonhomie to fall back on. Oh, and his manservant (Paul Bettany).Mortdecai is directed by Jurassic Park screenwriter director David Koepp, who most recently oversaw bike courier actioner Premium Rush.

The last time writer/director David Koepp and international man of mystery Johnny Depp teamed up, it was for the kooky, woefully under-appreciated Stephen King adaptation "Secret Window," a movie that ended with Depp, his teeth entwined with metallic braces, chomping down on some corn-on-the-cob. For their newest collaboration, January's "Mortdecai," the duo have decided to put the silliness out there, front and center, with Depp twirling a ridiculous (even by Brooklyn hipster standards) bit of facial hair and employing a British accent that makes Peter Sellers' voice in the "Pink Panther" movies seem like the pinnacle of grounded realism. And with our quartet of exclusive posters, everyone is getting in on the very goofy act.
In "Mortdecai," Johnny Depp plays the title character, a suave, slightly detached art dealer and, as the corresponding hashtag would suggest, part time rogue, who gets embroiled in a plot that involves terrorists,...

There's some good news for Johnny Depp fans. The actor's next film, "Mortdecai," will be released two weeks earlier than initially planned. Lionsgate has announced that it will hit theaters on January 23, 2015. The move will put the film up against the Jennifer Lopez vehicle "The Boy Next Door." The studio is moving "The Age of Adaline" from January 23 to April 24, 2015. It stars Blake Lively and Harrison Ford. "Mortdecai" centers on the dashing Charlie Mortdecai (Depp), who travels the world on the trail of a stolen painting which may contain a clue to a hidden cache of Nazi gold. Based on Kyril Bonfiglioli's book series, "Mortdecai" was directed by David Koepp ("Premium Rush"). He and Depp previously teamed on 2004's "Secret Window." "Mortdecai" also stars Aubrey Plaza, Ewan McGregor, Paul Bettany, and Olivia Munn. Depp was recently seen in "Transcendence," and will next appear in the musical "Into the Woods.

In David Koepp’s spy comedy Mortdecai, Johnny Depp plays a dapper James Bond type (an art dealer by trade) whose good looks and roguish charm are his only weapons during the hunt to recover a stolen painting. He also has a “man servant” named Jock Strapp (Paul Bettany). Fine, Depp. You win this round. How can we refuse? The film is adapted from the Mortdecai Trilogy written by Kyril Bonfiglioli — who was actually an art dealer in a former life. The books have been compared to the works of P. G. Wodehouse, particularly the Jeeves-Wooster novels. The gimmick seems to fall somewhere above the outright ridiculousness of the Austin Powers series. "Bit of a moron actually." If the perpetually drunk antics of Captain Jack Sparrow just aren't doing it for you anymore, than maybe the bumbling, foolishness of art dealer and rogue Charlie Mortdecai will get the job done. Johnny Depp takes the title role in Mortdecai, the adventure comedy from Premium Rush director David Koepp. The first teaser trailer has just arrived and it basically introduces us to the main character from Kyril Bonfiglioli's anthology book series. Mortdecai seems to have a bit of a reputation, and it's not a very good one. Do audiences want another weird, trademark Depp character in action? Watch! Here's the first trailer for David Koepp's Mortdecai, originally from Apple: Mortdecai is directed by David Koepp (Premium Rush, The Secret Window) and written by Eric Aronson, based on the anthology by Kyril Bonfiglioli. The first and last time David Koepp ventured into comedy territory behind the camera, we came away with Ghost Town. This time around, he’s throwing action into the mix as well for next year’s anticipated Mortdecai, and with Johnny Depp leading an all-star cast, we’re pretty much guaranteed something special.
With less than half a year left on the clock before the action-comedy hits, Lionsgate has launched a great first trailer to give us an idea of the film’s tone.

We've had a lot of feelings about Johnny Depp over the years, from his smoldering "Winona Forever" days to, well, pretty much everything from the past few years. However, this trailer for the upcoming spy comedy "Mortdecai" looks promising.
Depp's character, Charlie Mortdecai, is a veddy fancy art dealer (he has his own bloody manservant, thank you!) who has to find some MacGuffin-y painting that could hold the key to a trove of Nazi gold. Meanwhile, he's got a slew of people hot on his trail, from his wife to the British M15. The cast of "Mortdecai" includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Aubrey Plaza, Oliver Platt, and a whole lot of other cool customers. We don't get much in the way of plot deets, but the stylish '60s vibe goes well with the goofy British mannerisms of our hero.

Based on the beloved novels by Kyril Bonfiglioli - namely Don't Point That Thing At Me, After You With A Pistol, Something Nasty In The Woodshed and The Great Moustache Mystery - Johnny Depp's Mortdecai is a right royal romp of the highest order, with Depp playing an anarchic aristocratic art dealer named Charlie Mortdecai, and Paul Bettany his valet, Jock. Think Jeeves and Wooster, but with more sex, swearing and guns, and you've just about got the new trailer for Mortdecai. brightcove.createExperiences();As you may have spotted from that very brief teaser, the quality of the books (and the characters, and Johnny Depp's moustache) has attracted some pretty starry stars in the shape of Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Goldblum, Olivia Munn and Ewan McGregor. Johnny Depp was once labeled the greatest actor of his generation and, like many greatest actors of their generations, he’s gone through a bit of a rough patch, role-wise. Where he was once known for his versatility and indie choices, he’s now become a caricature of his former self, appearing in too many Disney movies and blase thrillers where he basically plays the same quirky character over and over again. Maybe this will all change with the upcoming comic thriller Mortdecai, in which Depp plays a charming international spy/terrorist/art dealer/all around rogue who also sports one remarkable mustache.
The plot of Mortdecai seems like a good one: Depp is Charlie Mortdecai, the aforementioned rogue, who races to recover a stolen painting that supposedly contains a code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold. The film is based on the book trilogy by Kyril Bonfiglioli,...

Well, the techno-thriller Transcendence may not have worked out all that well for Johnny Depp last month, but fans of the actor needn't worry, because 2015 will put Depp back on the weird side again. Mortdecai is an adaptation Kyril Bonfiglioli's The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery, the author's final novel which remained unfinished until satirist and parodist Craig Brown completed it. In the film, Depp plays the title character, an art dealer setting off from adventure to misadventure via Jersey and Moscow to a final showdown in a Buckinghamshire bungalow of unparalleled hideousness. Sounds pretty wild. And now we have a first look at a blonde, mustachioed Depp in the film, looking like a dashing hipster. Look!
