Since 2004, The Biggest Loser has showcased the most shocking weight loss transformations as participants drop hundreds of pounds in just a matter of days. Because of how quickly contestants manage to slim down, the show has been under quite a bit of scrutiny. As you might know, many past cast members have been vocal about the extreme way producers encourage them to lose weight. The diet and exercise routines are so brutal, many participants simply gain it all back once the show is over. In 2016, Kevin Hall, a scientist at a federal research center, studied the Season 8 cast of the show to determine why some contestants struggled to keep the weight off. His findings would later change the show forever. According to his research, people who compete on the program show a drop in metabolism. In other words, the weight loss is so sudden, their bodies fight to put the weight back on.

After Rachel Frederickson’s controversial victory last season, the producers are giving themselves a second chance with The Biggest Loser: Glory Days. All 20 contestants this year are former athletes, which theoretically should mean their minds and bodies are better suited for the intense regime expected of this competition. These former champions already know what it takes to be a winner but also understand the concept of limits and discipline, something Frederickson was criticized for lacking. Though it gets a little annoying how many times the trainers say it, this does have the potential to be the best season yet.

Jillian Michaels recently revealed why she chose to leave The Biggest Loser one season after her triumphant return to the weight-loss reality TV show.
Jillian Michaels 'Loser' Exit
Michaels, 40, wants it made clear that she’s not leaving the show with the idea of seeking out a more lucrative opportunity, and that she’s appreciative of the exposure The Biggest Loser gave her. However, the differences between Michaels and the producers ultimately made her realize it would be best to part ways.
"I don't want fans to think I feel like I'm too big for the show or that I'm seeking greener pastures. I'm so grateful to the show and so sad to leave,” Michaels told People, explaining, "There were some fundamental differences [with Loser's producers] that have existed for a while."
One of the issues Michaels had with producers was the edit that they gave her, which increasingly portrayed her as a one-dimensional villain.

After 10 years motivating contestants towards their weight-loss goals on NBC's The Biggest Loser, fitness guru and star trainer Jillian Michaels has herself thrown in the towel on the reality show. But why?

Yet, Michaels, 40, says, "there were some fundamental differences [with Loser's producers] that have existed for a while."
One main issue: how she was being portrayed in recent seasons.

After the controversy surrounding her shocking weight loss on "The Biggest Loser" last season, Rachel Frederickson faced a lot of scrutiny over whether she should have been allowed to win by dramatically dropping an unhealthy 155 lbs -- over half of what she weighed at the beginning of the competition.
By the end of the season, the 5'4" Frederickson weighed 105 pounds. She was eating 1600 calories and working out six hours per day. It was unhealthy, and even her trainers didn't seem happy with her state.
But two months after the controversial finale reveal aired, she's gained back 20 lbs, bringing her weight up to 125 pounds. And Frederickson is happy with the gain, calling it "my perfect weight."
Frederickson reveals to Us Weekly that she's more focused on eating healthy than losing weight. "I loosely count calories, but sometimes I might eat an Oreo," Frederickson says. "It's not the end of the world.

Jillian Michaels shocked face was plastered all over the media last month when The Biggest Loser winner Rachel Frederickson appeared at the show’s finale displaying a much leaner body than the one she had when she first left the show.

Michaels, who didn’t personally oversee Frederickson’s weight-loss, hadn’t expected to see the contestant so thin. "I was stunned," Michaels told HuffPost Live, adding that fellow trainer Bob Harper didn’t know the extent of Frederickson’s slimdown either. "I thought she had lost too much weight."
In an effort to avoid situations like Frederickson’s, The Biggest Loser employs a variety of “checks and balances.” After contestants leave the ranch to utilize the eating and exercise habits they’ve been taught, they are routinely contacted to make sure everything is going well. Michaels believes that the system failed this time around.

Jillian Michaels is finally opening up about her reaction to Season 15 winner of "The Biggest Loser" Rachel Frederickson and her stunning weight loss.
Michaels, who was visibly disturbed by Frederickson's 155 pound loss when it was revealed live during the show's Feb. 4 finale, yet only issued a perfunctory non-statement statement in the immediate aftermath, now admits she had no idea the transformation would be that extreme.

In Michaels' estimation, Frederickson somehow fell through the cracks in the gap period between filming at the ranch and the finale. "I was immediately concerned and wondering how this happened," she says. "In my opinion this had failed through those checks and balances.

The 24-year-old former swimmer and current voice-over actor lost 60 percent of her body weight and went from 260 pounds to 105. On Today, she argued that she was unhealthy before the show, not after, and lost the weight over seven months. She added that the reaction surprised her, since she "felt proud" of everything she accomplished. After Rachel's dramatic weight loss earlier this month, the show's trainers also spoke out, saying health was a main criteria. And Rachel said she would continue to find a balance. Rachel Frederickson raised eyebrows when she returned for "The Biggest Loser" finale in early February appearing very thin for the final weigh-in. She has admitted that perhaps she was "too enthusiastic" in her training once the show wrapped filming, but Wednesday (Feb. 26) on "Today," Frederickson says her weight loss was healthy.
"It was absolutely healthy weight loss. I dieted, exercised and did it healthy the whole way," says Frederickson. "I appreciate all the concern, and I can see where it comes from -- there is the movie magic, it's over seven months, almost a year of my life, losing the weight."
"I'm the healthiest, most alive I've ever felt," she adds. "I'm in the maintenance mode, which is just as hard as losing the weight. ... I think what I've learned is that I have an inner strength, I have a voice and I can trust myself."...

After last week's controversial finale, where winner Rachel Frederickson won Season 15 with a shocking overall weight loss, it seems "The Biggest Loser" is taking steps to keep contestants from going "too far" in their weight loss journey from this point forward.
According to E! Online, sources connected to the show say producers are considering making "small but significant tweaks" to how the contestants stay in touch after they leave the ranch, but before the live finale three months later, providing more "support and check-in" opportunities during the time they are losing weight on their own.
"There might be more focus on what happens to the winner after they are supposedly done with the show," says the source. There has been no official comment on any changes to the show from NBC.
