Actor turned film-maker Mark Leonard Winter’s directorial debut, which pairs veteran Weaving as a slobbering hermit with Phoenix Raei’s broken cop, doesn’t hurry towards anything
I tend to wince whenever I hear a film introduced as a blend of comedy and tragedy – not because it’s a bad combination, but because it’s one of the hardest to get right. So many artists attempt to tickle our funny bones while hitting us where it hurts, and so many come up short. Actor turned film-maker Mark Leonard Winter gives it a noble crack in his directorial debut The Rooster, a bumpy outdoorsy drama about two broken men – a cop and a hermit – connecting and potentially healing through the deployment of pensive stares and introspective dialogue, performed in Australian bush settings.

Phoenix Raei gained international acclaim with his lead role in the Netflix series, Clickbait (2021). Though the crime drama created by Tony Ayres and Christian White introduced him to a global audience, Raei has been a part of the entertainment industry since the 2010s. His passion for acting dates back to his early life, when he would rather act and make films with his parents’ camera than play with toys. Despite his apparent knack for acting, Raei almost didn’t become an actor. Education was of prime importance to his parents and this made him study law in college. But as...

This post contains spoilers for "The Night Agent," the novel and the TV series.
Before "The Night Agent" arrived on Netflix, it was sitting on shelves at Barnes & Noble. The 2023 political thriller series is an adaptation of Matthew Quirk's eponymous 2019 novel. A former journalist, Quirk writes breezy paperback thrillers in the Tom Clancy mold. "The Night Agent" is no different — a low-ranking FBI agent answers a call from a woman who escaped an assassin and together they come across a conspiracy within the White House.
That said, Netflix's "The Night Agent" is a very loose adaptation, as it uses the novel's premise and main characters to tell a different story. The novel's core characters — Agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), and White House Chief of Staff Diane Farr (Hong Chau) — are in the series. However, it also invents many new characters to fill out the supporting cast.

“Ginny & Georgia” has been chased off of Netflix’s all-time Top 10 list for English-language TV shows. In just its third week, “The Night Agent” has reported to the streamer’s overall chart in ninth place, dropping “Inventing Anna” to 10 and sending “Ginny & Georgia” back onto Route 20.
With another 130.48 million hours viewed in Week 3, “The Night Agent,” which premiered its first season on March 22, has now been viewed for a total of 515.57 million hours, per Netflix. Spoilers for "The Night Agent" follow.
"The Night Agent" proved to be a success for Netflix, so it's no surprise the platform has renewed the political thriller for a second season. Adapted from a novel by Matthew Quirk, "The Night Agent" follows FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso). He works in the White House's basement, and every shift, he sits next to a phone, waiting for calls from "Night Action" agents in case of an emergency. Peter's first call comes from Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), a niece of two Night Action agents. Rose narrowly escaped a home invasion that claimed her aunt and uncle's lives; she and Peter get thrown into a conspiracy that goes up to the Oval Office.
Quirk's novel was a standalone story, but the series had a more open ending — the creators were aware more seasons were on the table. After preventing the assassination of President...

“The Night Agent” might not be pulling “Wednesday” numbers, but the new thriller series had a very strong first week on Netflix.
The Shawn Ryan-created thriller topped Netflix’s Global Top 10 English TV series list in its first week of availability, with 168.71 million hours viewed. Beyond new debuts, “The Night Agent’s” start was the single best week for a show since Season 2 of “Ginny & Georgia” premiered to 180 hours viewed. Last week marked the third-biggest week for the debut of a Netflix show since the streamer started publicizing the Top 10 lists.

Hong Chau — the Oscar-nominated actor, who’s appeared in “The Whale,” “The Menu,” and “Downsizing” — is an interesting element on Netflix’s new series “The Night Agent,” and a revealing one. To cast Chau, a gifted and hardworking performer who’s been elevating projects for years, is to announce a certain ambition. Here, she’s playing the determined White House Chief of Staff, a figure close to the heart of various intrigues on a political thriller with schlock in its DNA. For all the things Amazon does as a streaming platform that make very little sense to me, I’ve always thought the service does a good job adapting airplane or beach novels for TV, delivering generally fast-moving genre pieces for an audience pre-disposed to devour them. Some (Bosch) have been good, some (Reacher) have been decently true to the spirit of the source material, and even the ones that were awful at least played directly to their target audience (please stop sending me DMs, Terminal List fans). All felt like reasonable plays for a company that, in its free time, has been known to sell books on the side.
Netflix doesn’t have that same business model, but Shawn Ryan’s adaptation of Matthew Quirk’s novel The Night Agent still feels like an Amazon-style show. It’s less textured and grounded than Bosch and its main character isn’t...

The Night Agent is a series created by Shawn Ryan starring Gabriel Basso. It is based on the novel by Matthew Quirk.
A call, an FBI agent and a conspiracy: the elements of the thriller are defined in just ten minutes.
About the Series
And the fact is that The Night Agent is a series that is not in the least misleading: a protagonist dedicated to good and an action script structure that jumps from one scene to another in a series that knows which strings to pluck and simply acts accordingly.
Absolutely nothing bad, but nothing that will be surprising either. A series with the tension of a John Grisham (without lawyers) in literature, close to Jack Ryan, although more devoted to intrigue and suspense than to action.
The Hollywood industry draws on what it knows best, from the well-executed suspense thriller, with its rhythm, the structured script, sometimes vacuous,...

A low-level FBI agent, Peter Sutherland, who works in the basement of the White House, watches a phone that never rings – until the night it does, sending him into a conspiracy that leads all the way to the Oval Office. The teaser trailer for The Night Agent begins with a phone ringing in the depths of the White House. An FBI agent looks shocked that someone’s calling this emergency line since it never rings. The agent answers it and finds himself plunged into a terrifying conspiracy.
Creator, showrunner, and executive producer Shawn Ryan describes The Night Agent, based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, as All the President’s Men with car chases. Speaking with Netflix’s Tudum, Ryan teased, “If you like the Jack Ryan books, the Jack Reacher books, if you like the Bourne Identity stuff, if you like political intrigue, then The Night Agent is for you.”
Ryan also confirmed that FBI Agent Peter Sutherland (played by Gabriel Basso) is just a well-trained man, not a superhero. “He’s very much an underdog in the middle of all this. He’s someone who, when he’s in a fight,...

If you're looking for something new to stream on Netflix after The Recruit, you might be interested in The Night Agent.
The new drama has a compelling hook that should be enough to get viewers to check out at least the first episode when it drops.
All episodes of The Night Agent will stream on Netflix on March 23, 2023.
As for that hook I was talking about:
Based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, The Night Agent is a sophisticated, character-based, action-thriller centering on a low level FBI Agent who works in the basement of the White House, manning a phone that never rings -- until the night that it does, propelling him into a fast moving and dangerous conspiracy that ultimately leads all the way to the Oval Office.
The teaser trailer is a fine display of action and intrigue, so Netflix may have another big hit on its hands.
