Exclusive: Chinese streaming giant iQIYI is involved in a legal row after featuring Korean masterpiece Oldboy in its library for at least six years without a proper license.
iQIYI is one of the biggest streaming services in the world, with more than 100M subscribers, but the company has faced a legal claim from Oldboy’s London-based distributor Celsius Entertainment.
Deadline understands that lawyers acting for Celsius and Oldboy producer Egg Films contacted iQIYI last August to allege that the streaming service had breached copyright after its license for the film expired in 2016.
“The pirated broadcast of this film will have a wide range of negative impacts in China, South Korea as well as around the world,” iQIYI was warned in a legal letter seen by Deadline.
“Your company has the social responsibility to protect intellectual property rights and safeguard the corporate image of Chinese enterprises, so please treat this matter with caution.

The 2000s saw the action genre in a state of flux. The Matrix revolutionized everything at the end of the previous decade, The Bourne Supremacy would make shaky cameras standard practice in 2004, and the MCU would take flight with Iron Man in 2008. At the same time, Michael Bay reached his ultimate form with Bad Boys II, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Kill Bill made kung fu classy, and Oldboy changed the way we look at hallways.
Within those changes came a host of greats that didn’t get the same attention. Some of these movies represent the first steps in the development of those who would define the genre, such as Scott Adkins and Gareth Evans. Some find stars at the height of the powers, such as Donny Yen and Michael Jai White. And some are just cool, because that’s really all an action movie needs.

Patel’s feature film directorial debut hits an occasional rough patch, but when it’s firing on all cylinders, it’s incredibly entertaining.

South Korea’s current box office champion multiple weeks in a row, Exhuma, offers an unexpected and entertaining take on folk horror. While dense in lore and spiritual worldbuilding, the latest horror offering from writer/director Jae-hyun Jang (Svaha: The Sixth Finger, The Priests) balances its grim, sometimes bloody folkloric terror with levity and heart. Anchored by four “ghostbusters” of sorts, with charismatic actors behind them, the intricately woven Exhuma delivers one of the year’s biggest surprises in horror so far.
Exhuma hits the ground running with an introduction to Shaman Hwa-rim (Kim Go-eun) and her close protégé Bong-gil, arriving on a flight to Los Angeles. They have been summoned by the ultra-rich Park Ji-yong (Kim Jae-cheol) for a well-paying gig helping him rid his infant son of a supernatural curse. ‘Thanos’ Josh Brolin Once Admitted To Disliking The Process Of Creating The Mad Titan Through CGI ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Josh Brolin gave Marvel fans the most iconic comic book villains when he appeared as Thanos in the MCU. The big bad purple bald guy beat the crap out of the Avengers in Infinity War and Endgame, but filming the scenes felt strange to the Oldboy star. He reportedly did not like the process of creating the Mad Titan on screen via visual effects. Scroll below to get the deets.
Before Brolin, Damion Poitier appeared as Thanos in 2012’s The Avengers’ mid-credit scene. The MCU films are always heavy on CGI, the same process used to create the Mad Titan. The movies earned millions at the box office. As per reports, Marvel’s quality has dropped after Avengers: Endgame, and creating a more ruthless villain than Brolin’s antagonist has been a challenge for Marvel.

Cat Person (Susanna Fogel)
The talk of the internet in late 2017, Kristen Roupenian’s New Yorker story about a date gone horribly awry lit a short-lived fire of discourse surrounding gender and power dynamics. About five years later does the big-screen adaptation arrive, and while it expands details of the original text in a few compelling ways, its new third-act addition calamitously renders the whole experience a pointless, heavy-handed, misjudged exercise that relies heavier on horror tropes than any sense of humanity. – Jordan R. (full review)

The Holdovers (Alexander Payne)

Disney appears to be having a Squid Game moment.
The star-studded Korean spy series Moving has become Disney+ and Hulu’s most-watched K-drama ever — in the U.S. and globally — within just seven days of release. The show launched on Disney’s streaming services on Aug. 9 and has become the company’s most popular series in any language, based on hours streamed, across the Asia Pacific region, including in Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. That means viewers in Asia have already watched Moving more than Disney’s core franchise series like The Mandalorian. (Disney declined to share more precise viewership data.)

Re-releases reliably dot the theatrical calendar and this week have a standout. Oldboy, the 2004 Cannes prize-winner, re-released by Neon on its 20th anniversary restored and remastered, grossed $235k on Wednesday and $150k Thursday — for a total cume $385k on 250 screens heading into the weekend.
San Francisco, NYC and LA, led by Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, are the top-performing cities so far for Park Chan-wook’s classic film — the first screening in U.S. theaters since its original North American release in 2005.
Oldboy follows Oh Dae-Su (Choi Min-sik), who, after being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, is released but must find his captor in five days. The critically acclaimed film is the second installment of Park’s The Vengeance Trilogy, preceded by Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) and followed by Lady Vengeance (2005). Episode 6 of Mask Girl really ties up things very neatly and truly embraces the revenge thriller genre. It may not have as big a twist as Oldboy, but it’s just as exciting and almost as shocking. We’re left with a few questions after the sixth episode and are hoping the finale will tie it all up neatly with a bow and leave no questions unanswered. Episode 6 has a large time jump from 2011 to 2023, and we see a huge change in Mo-Mi’s character as well as her appearance as she is older and has been in prison for years. We see the prison system and how some people are influential, but Mo-Mi manages to stand her ground and make her own space there too.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happens In the Episode?
Finally, we’ve returned to Mo-Mi’s side of the story after four episodes of new perspectives.

Twenty years after it premiered in South Korea and 19 years after a Cannes Film Festival jury headed by Quentin Tarantino gave it the Grand Prix award, Park Chan-wook‘s “Oldboy” is returning to theaters on August 16 via a pristine new 4K restoration overseen by the director himself. A philosophically dense meditation on the purposes and limitations of vengeance filled with bravura filmmaking moments — the most famous of which is an unbroken shot detailing a brutal fight in which the film’s hero takes on an army of enemies with a hammer — the film’s greatness was recognized almost immediately by critics and audiences, and its reputation has only grown in the decades since.
Revisiting the film during the remastering process, Park is happy with it yet wishes he had known what a phenomenon the film would become when he made it. “Initially when we were designing Woo-jin’s penthouse, I...

For the lucky few who caught Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy during its original, limited U.S. theatrical release in 2005, the film landed with the full force of the Korean cultural wave that was yet to come. Here, seemingly out of nowhere, was a viscerally disturbing cinematic vision — live octopus-eating, hand-to-hand combat via claw-tooth hammer and a climax involving double incest and the severing of a human tongue — but one delivered in a style as baroquely accomplished as anything Hollywood or American indie cinema had ever produced. The experience was that rarest of aesthetic shocks to the system (perhaps now extinct in our late, smartphone-everywhere era), like landing in a country and culture totally foreign to you for the first time, or stumbling onto a landmark work from a true master artist — who, somehow, you hadn’t even known existed.
To celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary, Neon is rereleasing Oldboy in U.

"Oldboy" is a hugely influential film, one that helped usher in a new age of Korean cinema and also made it popular in the West. The film is an adaptation of the manga of the same name, written by Garon Tsuchiya and illustrated by Nobuaki Minegishi, and it's a phenomenal tale of revenge. "Oldboy" is arguably best remembered for not only its plot twist -- which remains one of the best ones in cinema -- but an insanely well-choreographed hallway fight scene.
This scene has become something akin to the bike slide in "Akira," in that it became synonymous with the film, and it has since inspired countless homages and parodies. The Netflix universe of Marvel shows that started with "Daredevil" were essentially built off of hallway fight scenes, while James Gunn recently paid homage to the scene in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," as did an episode of "Superman & Lois.

So, we’ve had the perennial discussion about which actor could or should be the next James Bond but what about the man behind the camera? Strangely, the conversation around which director should helm a Bond movie doesn’t seem to take off quite as much — but it certainly deserves to. With that in mind, here are 10 directors we’d love to see take charge of the next James Bond movie.
Christopher Nolan
The fans’ number one choice. Nolan’s movies are always events — from “The Dark Knight” all the way up to “Tenet” and the upcoming “Oppenheimer,” Nolan is one of the best technical directors around and he is an expert of melding exquisite action set-pieces into the most intriguing narrative stories. Several of his movies already evoke a sense of Bond, including his Batman trilogy, “Inception,” and “Tenet.” Nolan and Bond would be a marriage made in heaven.

While Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden dealt with a lot of sex and kink in its story of a handmaiden who gets into the good graces of her Japanese heiress, only to defraud her, the Korean filmmaker in his latest Decision to Leave, dotes on a detective Hae-Joon (Park Hae-il) who is head over heels with a very possible murder suspect, Seo-rae (Tang Wei).
Ya see, it looks like she threw her husband off a mountain.
And love being the motif between the two pics, Chan-wook was called to the carpet by the global press today at the Cannes Film Festival to field, “What is love for you?”
The refreshing query came in the wake of an immediate press conference for Crimes of the Future in which David Cronenberg slammed U.S. conservative tendencies, in particular Roe vs. Wade.
