Three years after rebranding the channel formerly known as WGN America to NewsNation, the Nexstar-owned channel will officially be a 24/7 cable news outlet.
NewsNation says that with the addition of NewsNation Now with Adrienne Bankert on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, the channel will officially be programming news 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
NewsNation had been programming reruns of the CBS series Blue Bloods during the 4-7 p.m. weekend hours. Bankert will now anchor the window.
“We are immensely proud to announce that NewsNation is now a 24/7 cable news network,” said Sean Compton, president of Nexstar’s networks division, in a statement. “This milestone marks the culmination of our efforts to continue expanding and growing the network since launching it in 2020. It reaffirms our commitment to delivering unbiased news coverage, a mission that resonates deeply with our viewers, fostering their trust in the brand, and strengthening their loyalty to NewsNation.

Updated: President Joe Biden said that search and rescue operations are the top priority to find the six missing in this morning’s Baltimore bridge accident, in which a cargo ship slammed into the span and it collapsed.
“Our prayers are with everyone involved in this terrible accident, especially those waiting for news of their loved ones right now,” Biden said in a statement at the White House.
Ship traffic in the Port of Baltimore has been suspended, Biden said, while the bridge collapse has closed a major artery in the Northeast Corridor.
Biden said that the Army Corps of Engineers will lead the effort to clear the channel, and “we’re going to get it up and running as soon as possible.”
He also said that “it is my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect the Congress to support my effort.

Former President Donald Trump filed a defamation lawsuit against ABC News and George Stephanopoulos over the remarks the anchor made during an interview with Rep. Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina) on This Week.
Trump’s lawsuit, filed in a federal court in Miami on March 18, focused on how Stephanopoulos, at many points in his questioning, mentioned that the former president was found “liable for rape.” The jury found him liable for sexual abuse under New York law, but not rape.
“These statements were and remain false, and were made by Defendant Stephanopoulos with actual malice or with a reckless disregard for the truth given that Defendant Stephanopoulos knows that these statements are patently and demonstrably false,” Trump’s attorney, Alejandro Brito, wrote in the 20-page complaint.
“Indeed, the jury expressly found that Plaintiff did not commit rape and, as demonstrated below, Defendant George Stephanopoulos was aware of the jury’s finding...

Updated, with latest results: Donald Trump and Joe Biden dominated a majority of Super Tuesday contests this evening, making it all the more certain that the November election will be a rematch.
Biden and Trump were projected to be the winners, by a wide margin, of party primaries in California, Colorado, Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Maine, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Alabama, Utah and Tennessee. Biden also was projected to win Vermont, and Trump won a caucus in Alaska.
The lingering question was whether Nikki Haley would continue her bid for the Republican nomination as Trump’s last remaining rival. She was projected to win Vermont, denying Trump a sweep of all Super Tuesday contests. Referring to Trump’s speech earlier in the evening, her campaign said in a statement, “Unity is not achieved by simply claiming, ‘we’re united.'”
Otherwise, the former president scored lopsided margins of victory.

The suspense this Super Tuesday may be in watching how all of the networks try to make the night suspenseful.
Some 16 states and one territory will vote: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia. A Democratic caucus also is being held in American Samoa, and Iowa Democrats also will reveal their results.
But with Joe Biden and Donald Trump on their way to a rematch in the 2024 presidential election, coverage Tuesday will focus on margins of victory, when each candidate will clinch their nomination and what’s next from now until Election Day. There also will be attention to down-ballot races, including California’s Senate primary to fill the seat long held by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-ca).

Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis and the rest of the Republican field of presidential candidates aren’t the only ones who have something riding on the GOP’s next primary debate.
The event will be telecast Wednesday between 8 and 10 p.m. eastern from the University of Alabama by the upstart cable-news outlet NewsNation, and has the potential to affect more than just votes and donations.
Nexstar Media, the network’s corporate owner, hopes the special broadcast will woo new viewers to its recently assembled collection of media outlets, which also includes the CW. Megyn Kelly, the one-time Fox News firebrand who will be co-moderating the debate with NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas and Eliana Johnson of The Washington Free Beacon , will get a new crack at exposure to mainstream news audiences. NewsNation has bashed CNN in a new promo, noting that the network shouldn’t call itself the “most trusted name in news” if not covering all sides of a story on-air.
“Psst…Hey, CNN,” the promo began, immediately singling out the network. “If you want to call yourself the most trusted name in news…here’s an idea. Cover the news.”
The promo showed a clip of CNN in which anchor Jake Tapper noted they would not be carrying a Trump event live due to the controversial nature of the former president.
As of late, CNN has been cautious about showing footage of Trump on-air in an effort to curb the amount of misinformation spreading through his comments.
“Some of our competitors,” said NewsNation host Leland Vittert in the promo, “including CNN, have decided not to take these remarks” live.

Prince Harry‘s public image appears to have taken a tumble since splitting with the royal family in 2020. Once one of the clan’s most popular members, Harry’s status slipped once he and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped down from their roles as senior royals. In the years since Harry has become best known for airing his grievances about his family estrangement. This led one royal commentator to say the Duke of Sussex is “better to be seen and not heard.”

In the middle of what is one of the most consequential weeks for media in years, Michael Corn, the president of Nexstar’s NewsNation cable news channel, took a moment to gloat.
“We are as you probably know the fastest growing news channel in America right now,” Corn told a crowd of a few dozen assembled in the channel’s new New York studio Tuesday afternoon. “We are also the fastest hiring news channel in America right now. In fact, some of our competitors have been dramatically downsizing this week. We are upsizing, and hiring quite a bit.”
It’s something of an understatement for the news channel, which has stacked its lineup with familiar faces for TV news viewers, including ABC News and MSNBC veteran Dan Abrams, former CNN and ABC News anchor Chris Cuomo, former NBC News and ABC News anchor Elizabeth Vargas, Fox News alumni Leland Vittert,...

The new New York studio that Nexstar Media Group built for Elizabeth Vargas’ nascent NewsNation program is so big, the anchor believes she could do five cartwheels across if called upon to do so. Starting Monday night, the company begins the process of figuring out if such rigorous calisthenics will be necessary.
TV-news aficionados likely know Vargas from her 15-year stint as a co-anchor on ABC News’ “20/20,” but on Monday night, she will jump right into the fray in the information wars, with a program at 6 p.m. eastern – a time slot that has become more competitive in recent months. At MSNBC, for example, Ari Melber’s “The Beat” has become one of that network’s most-watched programs. Late-afternoon has become more of a cable-news battlefield as viewers who have learned to work from home after the coronavirus pandemic tune in earlier to get a recap of the day’s events.

Elizabeth Vargas thinks there’s room for a new evening newscast.
“I think a lot of people feel like they’re just being ignored or they’re turned off by the extreme nature of just one side, or the two extremes arguing with each other,” Vargas tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I think there’s a way to cover what’s happening right now in this country and around the world in a smart way. That doesn’t devolve into shouting matches or, you know, political talking points that aren’t really even related in many cases, to the events that we’re covering.”
Vargas, a veteran TV news correspondent and anchor (she succeeded the legendary Barbara Walters as the anchor of ABC’s 20/20), will launch her new show Elizabeth Vargas Reports on NewsNation Monday during the critical evening news window of 6 to 7 p.m.
“It’s the newscast of record for NewsNation every day.

Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor John Fetterman and TV personality Mehmet Oz met for their only pre-election debate, in what was perhaps the most closely watched match-up of all U.S. Senate candidates this midterm cycle.
Viewers were reminded that their high stakes race could determine who controls the upper chamber, but the debate was unusual in that Fetterman, who suffered a stroke last spring, is still recovering, and needed the assistance of a captioning screen, as was shown to the audience beforehand.
Right off the bat, Fetterman signaled to viewers about how he would come across to the audience: “Let’s also talk about the elephant in the room. I had a stroke. [Oz] has never let me forget that.
Former CNN host Chris Cuomo will be making his return to television news as he joins the subscription television network NewsNation, owned by the Nexstar Media Group. As reported by Variety, Cuomo will join the NewsNation prime-time line-up in the fall. He is the latest big-name news anchor to land at the fledgling news channel, following Leland Vittert from Fox, Dan Abrams from ABC News and MSNBC, and Ashleigh Banfield from CNN. “Chris joins our growing team of seasoned, award-winning journalists and will further our efforts to continue to ensure fairness and transparency in our news reporting and talk shows,” said Nexstar Media’s president of networks Sean Compton (via Variety). Cuomo was let go from CNN last year after evidence showed that he had advised his older brother, Andrew Cuomo, throughout the then-governor’s sexual harassment scandal. The news anchor is currently attempting to secure a 125 million payment from...

After a long and much-publicized interruption, Chris Cuomo wants to get after it again.
Cuomo, who made that phrase the mission statement for his 9 p.m. program on CNN, is taking his bulldog demeanor and lean-in anchoring style to NewsNation, the still-nascent news outlet backed by large station owner Nexstar Media, which has in recent months made a series of acquisitions aimed at bolstering its presence in the media sector. Cuomo will join the NewsNation primetime lineup in the fall.

Chris Stirewalt, who was a veteran politics editor at Fox News until he was let go in the aftermath of the 2020 election, is joining NewsNation, Nexstar’s non-partisan news venture.
Stirewalt will “provide balanced and accurate political analysis throughout the election season,” NewsNation said in announcing the hire, adding that it also had established a broadcast partnership with Decision Desk HQ for election data and polling results.
Stirewalt was dropped from Fox News in January 2021, in what the network said was a restructuring. But Stirewalt later wrote that he was fired from the network after defending the Fox News decision desk’s call of Arizona for Joe Biden on Election Night, the first major signal that then-President Donald Trump would lose his bid for re-election. That triggered a backlash against the network by Trump and his supporters.

An ABC News producer who has worked for years at “Good Morning America” has alleged that the show’s former top executive sexually assaulted her and another female staffer, and she claims the network did little to reprimand or punish him.
In a suit filed in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Kirstyn Crawford, a producer who works with ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos, alleges that Michael Corn, the former top producer at “Good Morning America,” assaulted her and another staffer, Jill McClain, on different occasions over a span of multiple years. Both women reported to Corn.

As the outgoing president’s legal cases to thwart Joe Biden’s 2020 election win continue to fail, the argument that Trump was actually victorious is becoming more and more farcical with each passing day. And Saturday’s heated Fox interview with Trump’s Director of Press Communications Erin Perrine proved as much.
In the interview, Perrine glossed over host Leland Vittert’s simple question about how Trump can secure 270 electoral votes, the amount needed to win the presidency, causing Vittert to abruptly end the interview.

The weekend’s images of protests of the death of George Floyd also saw widespread reports of members of the media being attacked, harassed, injured and arrested as they covered everything from peaceful marches to looting and unrest.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, run by the Freedom of the Press Foundation, said that they “are in the process of documenting at least 100 different incidents of aggressions against the media over the weekend” — from May 29 to May 31. The numbers may go higher as incidents are reported from Sunday evening. Of the more than 60 assaults on journalists they have tracked, 10 include damage to news equipment.
Still to be determined is how many of the incidents involved police action against journalists covering the protests, as reporters shared stories of being injured by members of law enforcement.

MSNBC anchor Ali Velshi usually gets to do his job from the comfort of a New York studio, surrounded by a helpful crew and the latest technology. On Saturday, he had to worry about being tear-gassed on the streets of Minneapolis.
Velshi, who has been delivering reports from the streets of that protest-torn city, was struck by a rubber bullet while covering the scene, just one of a number of mainstream press operatives confronted by new realities as they set about their job of trying to provide information to the public about a story that is more dangerous than the norm. Protesters have gathered in cities across the nation, ranging from Los Angeles and New York to Minneapolis and Salt Lake City, largely in reaction to the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police.
I’m hit in the leg by a rubber bullet but am fine.

Fox News reporter Leland Vittert, his cameraman and two security officers were harassed and struck by protesters in Lafayette Park as they covered the demonstration near the White House early on Saturday.
In an interview with Deadline, Vittert described how a number of those in the crowd turned their anger on the network, before about 30 to 40 surrounded them to the point where he and his crew banded together to make a brisk exit from the park.
“The last time I was this sort of scared in a crowd or something like that was in Tahrir Square,” Vittert said, referring to covering the Eqyptian protests in the Arab Spring of 2011. “There was a group from the Muslim Brotherhood that surrounded us, and a similar thing happened. But it was equally… it was very, very frightening. Had we not been able to push through and stay together, I think things could have ended very poorly.

A correspondent for Fox News Channel was harassed and chased by protesters in Washington, D.C., the latest example of TV journalists facing potential harm as they try to do their regular job of chronicling events as they happen.
Leland Vittert, a Fox News staffer who has been with the cable-news outlet since 2010, is no stranger to reporting from roiled settings. Both Fox News and CNN felt some of the protesters’ frustration as they gathered and marched across the country for a fourth straight night over the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Vittert acknowledged the heckling during the broadcast, saying, “We have some media critics out here.” He was then followed by protesters who continued to scream expletives at him after his report was interrupted.

Over the course of his presidency, President Donald Trump has hurled invective at any number of TV journalists, whether it be Don Lemon, Arthel Neville, Neil Cavuto, Nicolle Wallace, Brian Williams, Chris Cuomo, Leland Vittert, Peter Alexander, Yamiche Alcindor, Weija Jiang, Jon Karl or Paula Reid. But he seems to launch his worst material at Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski.
Trump’s continued efforts to stir up debunked conspiracy theories about a former staffer in Scarborough’s Florida congressional office represent just his latest attempt to smear the news hosts. The nation’s TV-news outlets have spent countless hours covering the coronavirus pandemic. On late Wednesday afternoon, for at least a little while, they will focus on something entirely different.
CBS News, NBC News and ABC News are preparing to break into regularly scheduled programming a few minutes before 4:30 p.m. eastern Wednesday in a bid to chronicle the launch of a joint mission between Nasa and entrepreneur Elon Musk’s SpaceX that will represent the first time American astronauts will take off from U.S. soil since 2011. Both Fox News Channel and MSNBC are planning to break away from regular programming at that time in order to bring viewers coverage of the spectacle. Fox News will offer Fox Broadcasting affiliates special coverage of the event at 4:25 p.m. with anchor Leland Vittert.
Some news divisions are using the launch to highlight emerging business ventures and new means of distribution.

Networks are ramping up their coronavirus coverage, as concerns escalate of a worldwide spread, major public events are postponed or canceled, and Wall Street experienced its worst week since the 2008 financial crisis.
The White House contends that the media is raising unnecessary alarm about the virus and its spread in the U.S., even with the intent of hurting President Donald Trump.
As he headed out to a rally in South Carolina on Friday, Trump told reporters, “I think that CNN is a very disreputable network. I think that they are doing everything they can to instill fear in people.”
Earlier in the day, his acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, appeared at the Conservative Political Action Conference and told the crowd that “the reason you’re seeing so much attention to it today is that they think this is going to be the thing that brings down the president.

President Donald Trump hasn't been happy with Fox News lately. Last month, the president attacked network anchors Shepard Smith, Arthel Neville and Leland Vittert.
