3.8 Crisis On Earth X Part 1
We were promised a more serialised crossover this year, and Crisis on Earth X Part 1 delivers on that front. In past crossovers, there was a clear 'home court advantage' so to speak. That is to say, while the characters concerned with the main action appeared throughout the crossover, each episode generally took on the characteristics of the show the time slot belonged to. There were also usually side characters who only got to participate when their show's episode brought the action into their orbit, whether physically or otherwise.
If Crisis on Earth X were to follow that model, Barry and Iris' wedding would likely have had to...

Time is an unpredictable thing. Sometimes, it steals things from you that you can't get back — emotions of a younger self your older self can no longer feel. Other times, it respects the most precious things you have, the feelings that have come to define you, and lets them endure.
Claire and Jamie's love falls into that second category. When they come together after two decades apart, both are nervous that the love they still feel will have faded in the other. We, as viewers, know this is not the case. We have seen...

Imagine being at a party and talking about Lord Of The Rings (it happens!) and hearing a voice pipe up from outside your circle. “The man might have made up some beautiful languages and written stories that generations of writers have responded to in ways ranging from homage to bad photocopy,” the voice says, breaking through the crowd. “But I’m going to guess he was no connoisseur of geography.”
You’d groan, right? It’s okay, though, because we’re not at a party. We’re on the internet, and we’ve chosen to hear writer Alex Acks’ argument for why J.R.R. Tolkien’s map of Middle Earth is a “geographical car wreck from which I can’t quite look away.” Basically, his argument circles around the realities of tectonic activity and the world’s head-scratching mountain ranges, some of which apparently have corners. “Mountains don’t ...

Tom Cruise has enjoyed one of the most stable careers in Hollywood; unlike other celebrities of his caliber, Cruise remains unscathed by controversy, couch jumping, aging, and lackluster films. Even The Mummy, which was almost universally panned, wasn’t a true loss for Cruise when you take a closer look at box office sales. The man is unbreakable, and probably immortal too.
This week on The A.V. Club, we take a closer look into the state of Tom Cruise and exactly what makes his armor so impenetrable. A.V. From first frame to last, Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk is a monumental achievement, a World War II epic of staggering visual spectacle (see it in IMAX if you can) that hits you like a shot in the heart. Leave it to a filmmaking virtuoso at the peak of his powers to break both new ground and all the rules – who else would make a triumphant war film about a crushing Allied defeat? And who but Nolan, born in London to a British father and an American mother, would tackle WWII without America in it?...

You guys, this is the Grey's Anatomy that I love!
Is it just me or was that a great hour? I mean, it was a great hour, and it wasn't a bottle episode. Based on the track record for season 13, the best hours have been bottle episodes. I'm pleasantly surprised.
Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 21 finally put some of the pesky issues to bed. Catherine and Richard finally made up. Catherine admitted she was wrong. Badass Bailey was back, and Eliza was nowhere to be found.
The whole irritating love triangle issue finally came out into the open and was dealt with, and not only was likable Amelia back but likable April, too.
As customary for Grey's, I laughed so much and got so teary-eyed throughout the entire hour, and that was mostly due to the cases. I love the fact that the cases were at the forefront and much of...

What an unsettling hour.
I can honestly say that Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 17 left me with conflicted feelings on many things. It left me with a few questions as well.
Montana was a breath of fresh air and a welcome reprieve. The return to Grey Sloan Memorial brought with it, the messiness that is so many characters' personal lives.
The hour chose to focus mostly on Maggie, as her mother returned, and Owen and Amelia's crumbling marriage.
Maggie tends to be an acquired taste for some viewers. Personally, I have a soft spot for her. That doesn't mean I'm incapable of acknowledging when she's annoying.
She was annoying a few times in this installment. A repeat pattern for her, is to be left out and completely unaware of critical information so that when she goes on one of her rants or behaves in an unflattering way, she comes across particularly...

All's fair in love and politics. That's how the saying goes, right?
Jane and Petra went head to head in the 2017 election for Room Mom on Jane the Virgin Season 3 Episode 14. The battle for mom supremacy didn't last long, but their rivalry did lead to some to some emotional revelations.
Elsewhere in the episode, Mateo's aide provided relief, and Xo questioned the future of her relationship with Bruce.
After the lackluster Jane the Virgin Season 3 Episode 13, I'm happy to say this installment got back on track. Everything from the election theme to Rogelio's personality to the romantic pairings just felt more natural.
Even though Jane and Petra have gotten along during the majority of the time jump, that doesn't mean they don't let their competitive sides come out from time to time. This time around, their rivalry extended to their children's school for the title of Room Mom.

Poor Guillermo Del Toro. The man has made both critically acclaimed indies and giant robot-vs-monster movies, and yet he still struggles to get movies green-lit. This week, we learned that Hellboy 3, the long-rumored third part of a planned trilogy, has finally and definitively been declared dead. The director, along with star Ron Perlman and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, met but were apparently unable to figure out a way forward. A.V. Club staffers Alex McLevy and Danette Chavez try to break down what went wrong and where Del Toro should turn next.

Like the collapse of a building, Alex's life is crumbling around him.
Just as he was getting ready to face the court on Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 9, Jo finally told Alex her secret. The reveal prompted him to turn into hero mode real quick.
Elsewhere in the episode, Richard learned he was being replaced, and Owen's marriage took a turn for the worse.
Alex has grown immensely since we first met him as an arrogant, selfish intern. He's a caring doctor, a loving partner, and a great friend. Despite his sardonic comments, Alex ultimately tries to do the right thing, even at the expense of himself.
He was ready for whatever outcome the court would decide. However, Jo's confession set him on a course that he may not be able to come back from.

Change is never easy, but no matter how resistant, the world of medicine requires forward momentum.
A new educational consultant was introduced on Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 7. However, her initial contact with the attendings didn't go smoothly.
Elsewhere in the episode, April started dipping her toe into the dating pool, and Amelia confessed her secret to Owen.
Dr. Eliza Minnick's introduction made waves at the hospital and not everyone is on board with her methods. Granted, I would be pissed too if she was inserting her opinions while I was doing surgery.
Eliza wasn't entirely wrong. Allowing the residents to take a more hands on approach is the best way for them to become more competent doctors at a quicker pace. However, purposely nicking an artery so a resident can fix it just seems reckless, and frankly unethical.
Andrew was able to mend the damage, but a patient's life shouldn't be treated so cavalierly.

There's nothing like a movie night at Litchfield to bring people together... Oh wait, did I say bring people together? I meant further fuel racial tensions.
Taystee's movie night selection of The Wiz was not a popular pick amongst the inmates on Orange is the New Black Season 4 Episode 10.
Elsewhere in the episode, Aleida got reacquainted with the outside world, Piper was forced to take a stand, and news about the body buried in the garden is about to rock the prison.
Who knew The Wiz would cause such a raucous? Probably Taystee, but you can't fault her for her love of Diana Ross and Richard Pryor. Taystee's film selection, while humorous in her pitch to Caputo, served to further expedite the race war that is almost bound to happen by season's end.

A significant new retrospective of the legendary and hugely influential Russian filmmaker is a fresh opportunity to see some gorgeous films on a big screen. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Ingmar Bergman called him the greatest director. Lars Von Trier calls him “God.” The legendary Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky, who died in 1986 aged only 54, is one of the most influential in the history of the medium, a cinematic philosopher who was constantly at odds with the Soviet government, which saw subversiveness in his morosely dreamy films… as, indeed, there may well have been. Tarkovsky called his style of filmmaking “sculpting in time,” and the ambiguous moodiness of his work often encompassed a particular Russian-flavored tumultuousness on the small scale of a human life reflected against human history, full of tragedy, trauma, and torment. But...

But...

5th Update, 6:30 Pm: The 25-year-old man who walked into a Fox TV station in Baltimore this afternoon claiming to be wired with a bomb was in serious condition at a hospital tonight. The man was shot at least three times by police after he ignored instructions to take his hands out of his pockets as he exited the evacuated building, the Baltimore Sun reports. Ed Brizzi of nearby Elkridge, MD, told the newspaper the man is his son, Alex, who lives at home and recently had…...

Donald Trump on Sunday wanted to make clear that "we have very little violence, very, very little violence at the rallies," following another raucous campaign event - this time in Arizona - that saw attendees attacked, ejected and arrested. Speaking to George Stephanopoulos on ABC's This Week, Trump, 69, said, "We don't condone violence," and instead used his comments to focus on what he said was the unconstitutional behavior of the protestors that have become fixtures at his events. "These are professional agitators and I think that somebody should say that when a road is blocked going into the event so...

Road trip! In this week’s Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith, Jackson, Callie, Bailey and Jo were recruited by a Col. Miller to visit Bauer Medical, a military hospital, and throw a Hail Mary pass to save the life of a veteran with a monster of a tumor. There was just one problem (well, besides the tumor, obviously).
Though Owen had forewarned the Grey Sloan docs to be on their best behavior, no one had given the same instruction to the patient’s regular oncologist, Major Will Thorpe (Scott Elrod, late of The Young and the Restless). Mind you, it was...

So it turns out that I maybe I do have a Tardis, because I was able to finish watching Jessica Jones and to catch up on Supergirl.
You remember that basically crappy review of Supergirl I gave a couple of months ago? Well, the show is getting there, though, im-not-so-ho, they aren’t taking advantage of what could be some great story arcs. Except for Alex Danvers. And Cat Grant. And Hank Henshaw. But more on that in a bit.
I watched “Strange Visitor From Another Planet,” an hour that really could have called “Why Did You Abandon Me?” Hank Henshaw, a.k.a. J’onn J’onzz the Martian Manhunter, struggled with the personification of survivor’s guilt and abandonment in the appearance of a “White Martian,” a member of the “other” Martian race responsible for the Martian holocaust – a literal “Strange Visitor.” And while the psychological voices from...

SNL's Taran Killam stopped by the best thing on Broadway, the Hamilton ticket-lottery preshow Ham4Ham, with Lin-Manuel Miranda this weekend to drop a little knowledge all wrapped up in a Christmas ditty. Killam's "12 Days of Christmas" parody contained five actual Hamilton facts not discussed in the musical and seven "best guesses," all of which sound pretty dead-on. It should almost go without saying that Khloé is Alexander Hamilton's favorite Kardashian. The man was a founding father, a pioneer, and a genius. Who else was he supposed to pick? Kourtney? Kim? You have a lot of learning to do if you think the answer is Kim. Even Kris would make more sense than Kim. Go get in that lottery line and educate yourself, people!

This is the actual view from Savant Central, looking due North.
What a year! I was able to take one very nice trip back East too see Washington D.C. for the first time, or at least as much as two days' walking in the hot sun and then cool rain would allow. Back home in Los Angeles, we've had a year of extreme drought -- my lawn is looking patriotically ratty -- and we're expecting something called El Niño, that's supposed to be just shy of Old-Testament build-me-an-ark intensity. We withstood heat waves like those in Day the Earth Caught Fire, and now we'll get the storms part. This has been a wild year for DVD Savant, which is still a little unsettled. "Star Wars" takes the cake as one of the most iconic films of all time. Yet within "Star Wars," there are many iconic scenes that stand out within the movie itself. Perhaps one these iconic scenes is the cantina scene from "A New Hope." Back in 1977, the scene almost looked like it was pulled out of a western--of course with some science fantasy-esque modifications, and it went a long way in establishing the "lived-in" world that "Star Wars" became so well known for. But one of the most memorable things in the scene has to be the music.
Since "A New Hope's" release, it's been parodied a thousand times over, solidifying its place in the pop culture aether. As iconic as it is, one wouldn't expect director J.J. Abrams to try and emulate the scene in the upcoming "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" film, would he? While one wouldn't call it emulating,...

Supergirl, Season 1, Episode 5, “How Does She Do It?”
Written by Yahlin Chang & Ted Sullivan
Directed by Thor Freudenthal
Airs Mondays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
It is becoming increasingly clear that Supergirl quite simply doesn’t know what kind of story it wants to tell. It has the tone of a superhero procedural down, and the airiness that it seems to be aiming for is present, but everything else is all over the place to the great detriment of each episode. “How Does She Do It?” is the sloppiest of all episodes to have aired so far and in the most varied of areas. Not only are the A and B plots all over the place, but character motivations are unclear at best or the complete opposite of characterizations that have already been established at the worst. It is astonishing that there are so many moving pieces throughout the episode...

2015 hasn't been too kind to Warner Bros. so far, with Jupiter Ascending, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Entourage, We Are Your Friends, and (most recently) Pan all underperforming or straight up bombing at the box office, and the studio might have another big flop on its hands with director David Yates' $180 million 3D Tarzan movie starring Alexander Skarsgard, Margot Robbie and Christoph Waltz.... Executives at Warner Bros. are probably eager for 2015 to be over. The studio spent the year reeling from a string of flops, with "Jupiter Ascending," "Entourage," "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," "Vacation," and "We Are Your Friends" all underwhelming or failing miserably. But at the top of the pile is Joe Wright's "Pan," which could wind up costing WB $150 million. Ouch. I would wager the suits are eager for the calendar to roll over to 2016, so they can release guaranteed money earners like "Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice" and "Suicide Squad" and put the last twelve months behind them. But first, they'll have to deal with another potentially impending disaster. THR reports that "Tarzan" is facing a rough jungle as it heads into post-production. The movie, on paper at least, seems like a sort of promising reboot with "Harry Potter" veteran David Yates behind the camera,...

Propelled by Oddball and Blinky Bill: The Movie, next week Australian films are set to smash the record for the biggest B.O. total in a single year.
The feature films and docs released in 2015 plus holdovers have amassed an estimated $61.8 million.
Produced by Steve Kearney and Richard Keddie and directed by Stuart McDonald, Oddball raked in $3.55 million in its second week, lifting its earnings to $6.3 million. Deane Taylor.s Blinky Bill climbed to $1.9 million after pocketing a tad over $1 million in its sophomore session.
So by the end of next week the 2015 total will surpass the current record of $63.4 million set in 2001, the year of Moulin Rouge!, Lantana, The Man Who Sued God and Crocodile Dundee in La..
In that year the Australian films. market share was 7.8 per cent. If the 2001 total was adjusted for inflation then 2015 would not be a record in real terms but the market share is a consistent barometer.

Oh my, is it be “spy time” once more? Already? Wow, 2015 has been a big movie year for all those “cloak and dagger” undercover men (and women)! Early in the year, audiences were introduced to the “hush-hush” exploits of Kingsmen: The Secret Service, ripped fresh from a very adult graphic novel. As Summer began to heat up, funny lady Melissa McCarthy took satiric aim at the genre in Spy (aided by action vets Jason Statham and Jude Law). And just two weeks ago, film fans were gasping at the daredevil work of Tom Cruise, risking life and limb in his fifth go-round as Ethan Hunt, leader of the Imf in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (number one at the box office for the last couple weekends). And before the end of the year, the king of “gentlemen agents”, 007 Aka James Bond returns in his (official) twenty-fourth action extravaganza feature film Spectre.

They say that clothes make the man. They also make the man in the movie and, sometimes, even make the movie itself live on in the annals of classic filmdom. With that in mind, here is a list (in no particular order) of ten gents and the characters they played who changed our sartorial habits forever.
1. Michael Douglas/Gordon Gecko—Wall Street
Arguably the movie that set the style for second half of the 1980s, Oliver Stone’s Wall Street featured Michael Douglas’ Oscar-winning turn as corporate raider Gordon Gecko, whose ruthlessness in the boardroom was only matched by his sense of style. Douglas is all clean lines in his pinstripe suits, suspenders and slicked-back hair, creating an iconic look that screamed “power” and “go fuck yourself” simultaneously.

As I mentioned way back on this post from 2008, as much as I’ve tried to branch out, my tastes are pretty narrow when it comes to reading material.
I’d love to say that I’m broadly well-read when it comes to the more celebrated books of the day, but it’s just not true. If you’re looking to engage in a discussion about today’s most incisive fiction, you’re much better off speaking with my wife (who works in publishing) than one such as I. Truthfully, I’ve pretty much lost my taste for fiction almost entirely. Unless I have some vested interest (like, say, I know the author or it’s about something near and dear to me), I usually cannot muster up the interest to crack the binding.
As a result, whenever I’m perusing through the aisles of a bookstore (when I can still find one,...

Everyone is different, and no cinematic medium proves this statement more than horror. Some people are paralyzed by heights. Others are frozen at the sight of spiders. Another might cower when thinking about claustrophobic spaces. We’re all just terrified little snowflakes with our own unique fear triggers, fluttering downward towards a bloody chopping floor.
With this mentality in mind, Insidious: Chapter 3 won’t be for everyone. My post-screening chat with some critic buddies revealed some other disapproving tastes, but for my money, writer-turned-director Leigh Whannell picks up right where James Wan left off in the scare department. Thank you, Insidious, for once again providing the jolts mainstream horror so desperately seems to be lacking.

The South by Southwest Film Festival is starting up this Friday, and I could not be more excited. This is my fourth year of attending the fest, and each year brings about a couple of films I love. What is also great about SXSW is, unlike Toronto or Cannes, there is plenty of room for discovery. Many films are making their world premieres here from lesser known filmmakers. SXSW also brings together an eclectic assortment of genres for the program, from indie dramas to horror films to science-fiction to you name it. I think going to those aforementioned festivals and just seeing "prestige pictures" continuously could get a bit boring. Sure, SXSW has a higher risk for a terrible movie, but the risk is exciting. Consequently, making a most anticipated list for a festival offering a lot of discoveries seems like a contradiction. But, of course, if you look through the program,...
