Although never named in any entries of the franchise, the deadly aliens in the "Predator" series are a species called the Yautja (pronounced "Yah-oot-Cha"). The films themselves do little to explain where they come from and what their civilization might be like. What little we know is based on seeing a few of them as intergalactic big-game trophy hunters, but is this true of their entire society? Is their civilization centered around the hunt? Or are the Predators we've seen pariahs, the Yautja equivalent to big-game trophy hunters like Walter Palmer, widely criticized for his participation in the controversial killing of both Cecil the lion and a protected ram in Mongolia?
In 2010's "Predators," Royce (Adrien Brody) quotes Hemingway, "Certainly there is no hunting like the hunting of man and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never really care for anything else thereafter." Like us,...

Who would have guessed the author of A Song of Ice and Fire novels George R.R. Martin, to be a Marvel fan? Usually, writers of his stature often claim to be neck deep into von-Goethe, Hemingway, and the obvious Shakespearean dramas. But Martin broke stereotypes after claiming to be an avid comic book fan, particularly inclined towards Marvel, more than DC.

During an interview with The Independent, George R.R. Martin spoke highly of Marvel Comics and its impact on his writing. While explaining why his preference particularly shifted towards Marvel over DC, Martin praised Stan Lee’s Spider-Man to be more refreshing than DC’s Superman.

One of the world’s great true-life train heist stories is set to return to the big screen in China. Filmmaker DaMing Chen and veteran producer Chris Lee have partnered to develop a feature adaptation of James Zimmerman’s acclaimed nonfiction book, The Peking Express: The Bandits Who Stole a Train, Stunned the West, and Broke the Republic of China.
The new film, like the book, will recount the improbable saga of a 1923 incident once known as the “Lincheng Outrage,” which was sparked when Chinese bandits raided a luxury express train bound for Beijing and took over 300 international hostages — captivating the world and stirring up a six-week geopolitical showdown. A subject of popular fascination a century ago, the event inspired no less than Josef von Sternberg’s 1932 romance/adventure classic Shanghai Express, starring Marlene Dietrich and Anna May Wong, as well as two later Paramount Pictures remakes.

The singular voice of Charlie Ergen, long an outspoken figure willing to express unconventional views on the media business, fell silent Friday as he was absent for EchoStar’s quarterly earnings call.
The Dish Network parent, of which Ergen is executive chairman, reported a loss of 314,000 Dish subscribers in the quarter, leaving it with 8.53 million. The downturn in pay-tv was blamed for causing an 8% slide in total revenue, to $4.16 billion from $4.53 billion in the prior-year period. Dish and EchoStar completed a merger in January, so the financials and year-to-year comparisons were provided on a pro-forma basis.
While the satellite firm is continuing to pivot from pay-tv to wireless, it faces a significant challenge regarding its debt load of $26 billion. In an SEC filing on Thursday ahead of earnings, the company noted that it “expects to use a substantial amount of cash” to make debt payments this year, including one in March.

In the opening scene of In Her Car, a young Ukrainian woman stands before the bombed-out wreckage of her family home, screaming her sister’s name. There’s been a Russian missile attack, and the house, like the woman’s life, lies in ruins.
Two years into the Ukraine war — the second anniversary of the Russian invasion is this Saturday — the world has become accustomed to, some would say numbed to, an endless stream of similar scenes of destruction coming out of Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Donetsk. The devastation wrought by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war has become horrifyingly commonplace.
But this is not the nightly news. In Her Car is a drama series, conceived, produced, and shot in Ukraine in the wake of the Feb. 24 invasion that explores the psychological impact of the war on ordinary Ukrainians.

[This story contains spoilers from the fourth episode of Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, “It’s Impossible.”]
For Diane Lane, the entire premise of Feud: Capote vs. the Swans is full of complexity and layers.
As the FX series depicts the fallout from Truman Capote’s “La Côte Basque” — a chapter from his unfinished novel, Answered Prayers, that was excerpted in Esquire‘s November 1975 issue that caused a giant rift between the acclaimed writer and his “Swans” — the actress can’t help but notice the irony that she’s playing socialite Slim Keith, one of the Swans that was outraged by Capote’s thinly veiled portrait of the elite milieu in which she was a part. “I imagine them sitting on a sofa, enjoying champagne and popcorn, and having the last laugh on all of us,” says Lane, who laughs at the meta nature of the show’s depictions of the secrets, lies and gossip shared between Keith’s wealthy cohort.

While not quite autobiographical, Klaudia Reynicke’s third feature, “Reinas,” which world premieres at Sundance’s World Cinema Dramatic Competition, taps her own childhood memories of leaving her home in Peru for another country.
The Swiss-Peru-Spain co-production is set in the summer of 1992 when social and political unrest is roiling Lima, prompting Elena (played by Jimena Lindo), a mother of two young girls, to accept a job offer in the U.S. However, she needs the consent of her estranged husband (Gonzalo Molina) to take their daughters abroad. The girls, who barely know their father, are reluctant and wary at first but warm up to him, complicating matters further as conflicting emotions jeopardize their plans.
“It’s not exactly my story but the feelings are,” said Reynicke, who left for Switzerland with her mother at the age of 10 and had to adjust from living in a crowded family-packed house to...

Fade up on a mountain of rocks in a quarry — raw material for construction, for literal nation-building, yet mining also destabilizes the land. The shot tracks along, as we hear a distant rumble – is it a storm on the horizon, far-off construction, or something more ominous? The camera comes to rest on an empty frame. The protagonist, Lim Cheng Soon (Peter Yu) and his brother Cheng Boon (Johnson Choo) rise from below, where they've been digging for rocks, up into frame.
An opening that encapsulates a film where everything important is operating under the surface, a film that needs one to excavate it for a meaningful experience. Hemingway-esque in its sparseness but also in its hidden richness and depth, much like the films of Edward Yang. We think we know what's going to happen, because we're familiar with the tropes. Yet at every turn, we're...

Amigo the Devil has announced his third studio album, Yours Until the War Is Over, arriving February 23rd. The lead single “Cannibal Within” can be heard now.
As Amigo the Devil, singer-songwriter Danny Kiranos has garnered a significant following with his disarming, lyrically uncompromising brand of dark folk. “Cannibal Within” fits that description with its sparse banjo, haunted clink-clank percussion, and gripping poeticism: “All the parts we hate start adding up/ Until we find ourselves with more regret than blood.”
“There’s a tiny little cannibal inside of us all and it feeds on our insecurities,” commented Kiranos in a press release. “The more it feeds on doubt, jealousy and self devaluation, the bigger it grows until it becomes bigger than we ourselves are. And then we’re left with nothing. We lose the war.”

Those who play the popular game Lucky Lady’s Charm are no strangers to lucky symbols such as timeless rabbit’s foot, classic horseshoe and elusive four-leaf clover. These iconic charms have long been associated with good fortune and positive energy.
It is not surprising to discover that famous people, too, have the lucky charms they hold dear. Beyond mere superstition, these objects hold sentimental value and unique stories that offer a glimpse into the lives of those who carry them.
Hemingway’s pocket of luck
Ernest Hemingway, affectionately known as “Papa,” sincerely believed in luck and carried several good luck charms throughout his life. While living in Paris as a journalist and budding novelist, he believed in bringing a horse chestnut and a rabbit’s foot in his right pocket for luck.

Eight decades ago, the United States was in the second full year of World War II. And there was little escape from the horrors of the global conflict. The war even dominated cinema-seven of the top ten films of the year were war-themed. The second highest grossing film of the year was “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” which opened on July 14, 1943, earning $6.3 million-nearly $3 million more than the beloved Oscar-winner “Casablanca,” which placed No 6 that year.

Across The River And Into The Trees, the long-awaited Ernest Hemingway adaptation starring Liev Schreiber (Spotlight), Matilda De Angelis (The Undoing), Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right) and Danny Huston (The Aviator), has set North American release plans with Bleecker Street. The film based on the last full-length novel published by Hemingway in his lifetime, which award-winner Paula Ortiz (The Bride) directed, will bow exclusively in theaters this fall.
Adapted for the screen by BAFTA Award winner Peter Flannery (The Devil’s Mistress), Across the River follows Richard Cantwell (Schreiber), an American Army Colonel in post-wwii Italy. This post contains spoilers for the "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" season 2 finale.
Knowing that the imprisoned Clones are being taken to Dr. Hemlock's (Jimmi Simpson) secret facility, and that's where Crosshair is being held as well, the Bad Batch (Dee Bradley Baker) decide they need to mount a rescue. With no indication of where Hemlock's top-secret facility is, they decide they need to find Hemlock and plant a homing beacon on his ship. They work to infiltrate a summit being held by Tarkin (Stephen Stanton) on his home planet of Eriadu. As they make their way to Eriadu and begin infiltrating Tarkin's base, they realize there are other anomalies that make them believe the base has been infiltrated by others. They plant the homing beacon successfully, but Saw Gerrera's partisans are hell-bent on destroying the base, regardless of the importance of the Bad Batch's mission. With the base...
