God doesn’t take the stage until the second song in Roman White’s good-hearted summer camp-set Netflix musical “A Week Away.” His sudden invocation hints at a cheeky sense of humor about the whole thing that is sadly lacking from the majority of the movie. There’s nothing really sneaky about the white bread Christianity — pretty plain stuff about how God loves everyone and it’s nice to be kind to people — at the soul of White’s film, but the sudden mentions of God, the Bible, and salvation are first introduced with a winking nature that hints at a funnier, fresher feature underneath. Yet even as “A Week Away” wears its relentlessly optimistic and cheesy soul on its sleeve, it’s hard to dislike.

Attempting to steal the mantel once held by the films of the “High School Musical” franchise, the new Christian-rock themed A Week Away, delivers a rewarding enough tale of a young man finding himself and partners it with somewhat catchy musical numbers that it makes the film’s running time not seem as though the end of the film is also seven days away.
The film follows troubled teen troubadour Will Hawkins (Kevin Quinn) after he is given the choice between attending Christian summer camp or being sent to juvenile detention after a run-in with the law. Of course, Will chooses camp and joins counselor Kristen (Sherri Shepherd), her son George (Jahbril Cook), and the camp’s director (David Koechner) as the fish-out-of-water character that just might find the redemption and family he has been searching for.
While some of the songs stray a little too much at times to the religiosity of the proceedings,...

Say you’re a wild, wayward but ultimately gold-hearted teen who gets busted for attempting to steal a cop car, and your weary, exasperated but ultimately on-your-side counselor offers you a choice of correctional penalty: an extended spell in juvenile hall, or one summer of singing, swimming and mild soul-searching at a Christian youth camp. Which do you choose? If it seems a no-brainer, the achievement of “A Week Away” is to make us collectively wonder, after 90 minutes of aggressively wholesome hijinks, if juvie would be so bad after all. A purposeful, programmatic attempt by Netflix to encroach on both the faith-based market and the Disney Plus demo, this innocuous but character-free tuner shamelessly copies and crosses the formulae of “High School Musical” and “Camp Rock” down to the last, sequel-prompting detail.

A cloying new sub-Disney Channel teen musical, packed with unremarkable performances and forgettable songs, feels oddly of another period
A Week Away, Netflix’s High School Musical-style play for the contemporary Christian teen market, feels strangely unrooted from our timeline. The musical about a week at a Christian summer camp, directed by Roman White, is ostensibly set in the present yet transparently derives its musical and choreography cues from mid-2000s Disney projects like the aforementioned series and Camp Rock, and lead Kevin Quinn looks eerily like Zac Efron circa 2009. It’s a coming-of-age (and faith) movie in which there are barely any phones to be found.

The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 28 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 28; last year only 21 TV movies were submitted.
All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until July 13 to cast their 2020 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. In 2017 that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. And, as opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

It’s a Larry Blamire film, and it’s composed of entirely New and Unique elements: a lonely mansion, strange servants, the reading of the will, weird heirs, death threats, snoopy reporters, a midnight seance, mysterious locked rooms, the clutching hands of a phantom menace, and the ultimate terror, Kogar the mighty ape. All new, right? This ‘nothing you’ve ever seen before’ is performed by Blamire’s nimble acting clan, all competing to immortalize some of the silliest dialogue ever written. Two versions of the screwball-nostalgic farce are present on this special edition disc, along with the usual disturbingly offbeat selection of Blamire extras.
