Hunt Club
When a young woman (Mena Suvari) breaks up with her girlfriend (Maya Stojan) and is subsequently persuaded to go on a hunting trip with a father and son (Caspar Van Dien and Will Peltz) who witness the incident, nothing is as it seems. They haven’t told her that on this trip, she will be the prey, but there are a few things which she hasn’t told them either. When I met Hunt Club director Elizabeth Blake-Thomas, I explained that I’ve seen a lot of films about hunting humans over the years but that I couldn’t recall another one with a female director.
“It was important that we had a female director because of the subject. There was no choice, it could not be a male director. We had everything from a very strong female led team actually: the makeup, the designers, the wardrobe, the production.

Self-consciously tacky effort recalls the classic horror films that made a spectacle of women being murdered and abused
This is frankly a shonky bit of exploitative nonsense that, in a way, recalls the classic horror films that feminist film theorist Carol J Clover wrote about so perceptively in her foundational tome Men, Women and Chainsaws. Such films – in this case, on an island where vile rich men espousing misogynist views hunt down and kill the women they’ve trafficked there – only to turn the tables in the last act when the “final girls” triumph so that female viewers might experience a cathartic thrill of vengeance.
That said, one gets the impression that the film-makers on Hunt Club, starting with screenwriters David Lipper (who has a supporting role here) and John Saunders, and director Elizabeth Blake-Thomas, aren’t taking any of this that seriously. The film seems to revel in the low-budget tackiness of it all,...

Sometimes, there comes a movie that is shot on a low budget, but with its riveting dialogue and seriously good acting, it keeps the viewer engaged throughout its entire runtime. Unfortunately, Hunt Club, directed by Elizabeth Blake-Thomas, is not that kind of low-budget movie. It’s apparent that the budget for the film was pretty tight, and they spent most of it getting Mena Suvari and Mickey Rourke on board. The major flaw of the film is the dialogue written by David Lipper and John Saunders. The lackluster acting and editing don’t help elevate the movie at all. Sure, there are campy slasher moments that provide some pulpy fun, but the film doesn’t live up to its decent plot.
The narrative revolves around Cassandra, who befriends a suave gentleman and his son and agrees to go on a unique hunting affair on an island after they tell her about the hefty prize money.

"They brought us here to hunt – us." Uncork'd Entertainment has revealed a trailer for an indie action thriller titled Hunt Club, from a British filmmaker named Elizabeth Blake-Thomas. This is being dumped on VOD / DVD in April if anyone is interested in watching anyway. A gripping story of male hunters who lure women to their island with the chance to win $100K in a hunt, only to discover they are the hunted. But this time they have messed with the wrong girls and discover women can be better hunters than men. The film features a gnarly B-movie cast: Mena Suvari, Maya Stojan, Casper Van Dien, Mickey Rourke, and Jessica Belkin. Rourke and Suvari previously co-starred in Tony Scott's Domino back in '05. "We're extremely stoked to be releasing this very hot tale of survival and revenge, with it’s exciting storyline and an incredibly gritty performance by Mena Suvari in the lead role,...

Francesca Reale, Jaboukie Young-White, Catherine Cohen (High Maintenance), and Brian Muller (The Deuce) star in Dating in New York, an indie comedy from first-time feature helmer Jonah Feingold. Set in New York, the film explores modern dating tropes such as ghosting, orbiting, and profound concepts like an “I miss you” text. Jerry Ferrara, Arturo Castro, Taylor Hill (Broken Heart Gallery), Alex Moffat (SNL), Eva Victor (Comedy Central), and Yedoye Travis (Comedy Central) co-star. The story centers on Wendy and Milo (Reale and Young-White) who, both packing their own emotional baggage (literally), are thrown together to help navigate the city and each other’s dating lives. Their L-Train fueled-quest for love ultimately begs the question: can ‘happily ever after’ truly exist in the age of read receipts? Joaquin Acrich produced the pic with Mason Novick,...
