In FX’s Clipped, we first meet Doc Rivers (Laurence Fishburne), the real-life basketball coach of the L.A. Clippers, in 2013 just as he’s taking over the so-called “worst franchise in NBA history.” He has his doubts about the team, especially the presence of their volatile, self-important owner, Donald Sterling (Ed O’Neill), but he knows that his legacy will be sealed forever if he can put a ring on the finger of L.A. basketball’s ugly sister.
The scenes of Rivers whipping these perennial losers into shape are pure shots of sports-drama pathos. After a bracing defeat to a hardier team, the players begin the next training session with Rivers viciously trash-talking each of them. He goes after their personal lives and their partners, hitting them all in their most vulnerable spots. They start barking insults back at him, and then at each other, and he smiles. From that point on,...

Clipped, the dramatization of the real-life 2013 racism scandal of former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling adapted from both the real-world events and the ESPN 30 for 30 podcast covering them entitled The Sterling Affairs, presented a unique challenge for me as a critic because I don’t follow sports. I never have and what familiarity I do have is mostly related to Philadelphia teams, not Los Angeles.
So, having no prior knowledge or investment in the real-world story, though as far as I can tell it is largely accurate, the LA Clippers, or even professional basketball, would I be able to even follow the narrative, let alone get invested in it? The answer, shockingly enough, is yes. Clipped is a remarkably strong drama with some brilliant performances and a surprising amount of biting political commentary. How did they pull it off? Let’s discuss.

Of L.A.’s two NBA teams, the Clippers have always been like the neglected little brother next to the more glamorous and celebrated Lakers. So it’s fitting, then, that FX’s new Clippers chronicle Clipped — premiering Tuesday, June 4 exclusively on Hulu; I’ve seen all six episodes — pales in comparison to HBO’s superior Lakers saga Winning Time. A gaudy and campy basketball docudrama sung in the key of Ryan Murphy (though Murphy isn’t involved in this production), Clipped bites off far more than it can chew. It’s part underdog sports drama, part overheated soap opera...

"I need to show them that I have the power." FX on Hulu has revealed an official trailer for a series called Clipped, about the other Los Angeles basketball team known as the Clippers. Hot on the heels of the HBO Max series Winning Time about the L.A. Lakers, this one is also about a controversial moment in this other Los Angeles team's (recent) history. FX's Clipped takes you behind the scenes of a notorious NBA owner's racist remarks, captured on a tape heard around the world. This series is based on the hit ESPN 30 for 30 podcast "The Sterling Affairs", charting the collision between a dysfunctional basketball organization & even less functional marriage, and the precipitating tape's impact on an ensemble of characters striving to win against the backdrop of the most cursed team in the league. Clipped features Laurence Fishburne as Doc Rivers, Jacki Weaver as Shelly Sterling, Cleopatra Coleman as V. Stiviano,...

Ten years ago today, TMZ published an audio recording of former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling saying racist things surreptitiously captured by his mistress, V. Stiviano. The recording led to his downfall, and changed the NBA forever.
If you’re not a basketball fan, you might not remember the story. But FX’s limited series “Clipped,” which just got its first trailer today, makes a case for the Donald Sterling saga as a “People v. O.J. Simpson”-style story about race, class, power, and that unique corner of America known as Los Angeles.
Per FX, “Clipped” “charts the collision between a dysfunctional basketball organization and even less functional marriage, and the precipitating tape’s impact on an ensemble of characters striving to win against the backdrop of the most cursed team in the league.”
“Clipped” stars Ed O’Neill as Sterling, a man who made his fortune building an L.

HBO had the Lakers, now FX has the Clippers. Will the series’ fates differ (as the real-life teams’ have), or will “Clipped” face the same quick, quiet end as “Winning Time”? We’ll find out this June, when FX’s latest ripped-from-the-headlines adaptation premieres exclusively on Hulu. The trailer was released Thursday, April 25 — just under six weeks prior to the premiere — and now you can watch the first footage below.
Set in 2013, the six-episode limited series stars Ed O’Neill as L.A. Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling and Laurence Fishburne as the team’s head coach, Doc Rivers. Formerly with the Boston Celtics (who won an NBA title in 2008), Rivers had just joined the Clippers when the owner’s racist comments went public, sending the organization into a tailspin and Sterling into a power struggle with Rivers, players, and the NBA at large. Key players in the tumultuous saga include Shelly Sterling...

On Friday, Lakers forward LeBron James finally addressed the Kyrie Irving situation, a day after the Brooklyn Nets guard and former teammate on the Cleveland Cavaliers was suspended for anti-semitic comments.
James, who has quickly spoken out many times on various race-related controversies, finally got around to addressing the Irving situation after days of silence.
“He caused some harm, and I think it’s unfortunate,” James said to reporters. “But I don’t stand on the position to harm people when it comes to your voice or your platform or anything. So it doesn’t matter what color your skin is, how tall you are, what position you’re in. A week after the Phoenix Suns’ primary owner was suspended by the NBA for “clearly” violating its workplace standards, Robert Sarver said today that he is “beginning the process of seeking buyers” for that team and the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury.
Sarver’s yearlong suspension and 10 million fine came after an independent NBA probe into allegations, fueled by an ESPN exposé, that he used racist language and mistreated employees. The investigation also found that he was involved in “instances of inequitable conduct toward female employees,” including “sex-related comments” and inappropriate comments on employees’ appearances.
But the league and Commissioner Adam Silver immediately took flak for what many considered a too-lenient penalty.

“Our league definitely got this wrong,” wrote LeBron James today just hours after NBA Commissioner Adam Silver went before the media to try and contain the fallout over what many consider too-mild sanctions on Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver for his reported sexist, racist and abusive behavior toward subordinates.
James, like many former players and pundits, feels that “there is no place for misogyny, sexism, and racism in any work place. Don’t matter if you own the team or play for the team.”
Possibly even more crucial, Suns all-star point guard, locker room leader and former president of the NBA Players’ Association Chris Paul just posted a statement on Twitter that reads in part, “I was and am horrified and disappointed by what I read…I am of the view that the sanctions fell short in truly addressing what we can all agree was atrocious behavior.”

HBO has released the first teaser trailer for Adam McKay’s forthcoming Lakers scripted series, fresh with an official new title: “Winning Time: The Rise of The Lakers Dynasty.” Previously titled “Showtime” for the powerhouse team’s “showtime era,” during which they won five championships, the new title doesn’t pack quite the same punch but is perhaps less confusing considering it’s an HBO show. McKay is fresh on viewers’ minds right now as his star-studded satire “Don’t Look Up” hits theaters December 10 and Netflix December 24. Whether that momentum will propel him through a fruitful awards season is yet to be seen.
The teaser trailer offers an exciting look at the period sports drama, complete with a nostalgic 1980s palette and fashion sense. It also features newly revealed cast members Gaby Hoffmann, Jason Segel, Adrien Brody, Tamera Tomakili, Julianne Nicholson, Tracy Letts, and Rob Morgan. They join previously announced...

The untitled HBO series about the Los Angeles Lakers has added five to its cast, with Bo Burnham also exiting the series.
It was reported in March that Burnham had been cast in the role of Celtics legend Larry Bird. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Burnham is no longer involved with the project due to scheduling conflicts.
Sean Patrick Small will instead play Bird. Bird is described as a basketball star who hates the spotlight; preferring instead: Budweiser, ratty jeans, and brutally, ruthlessly destroying his opponents on the court. He and Magic Johnson, who have been pitted against one another since their legendary NCAA championship duel, continue their rivalry for the next decade.
Additional castings include: Olli Haaskivi as Phil Knight, the founder of Nike; Rachel Hilson as Cindy Day, the girlfriend of Magic Johnson; Newton Mayenge as Jim Chones, a veteran NBA forward; and Jon Young as Brad Holland,...

Additional new castmembers announced Friday include Rachel Hilson as Cindy Day, a girlfriend of Magic Johnson, Newton Mayenge as veteran NBA forward Jim Chones and Jon Young as Lakers’ player Brad “Potsie” Holland.
Bo Burhnam had been in consideration for the role, but an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap that the actor-director was not able to be involved due to scheduling conflicts.
