Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch shows the difficulties of crab fishing on the Bering Sea. Through 19 seasons of the show, fans have seen injuries and deaths occur on the crab boats — and the F/V Cornelia Marie was no stranger to this. Here’s a ranking of the worst injuries on the Cornelia Marie.
5. A crewmember sprained his ankle after getting hit with 80,000 gallons of water
One Deadliest Catch crew member aboard the Cornelia Marie experienced multiple injuries while fishing. One such injury occurred while the boat attempted to outrun an ice pack. The weather conditions were extremely difficult for the crew, thus creating unsafe conditions.
Ultimately, Taylor, one of the crew members dealing with the crab pots in the harsh weather, was tossed across the deck by 80,000 gallons of water. He sprained his ankle and couldn’t continue working for the evening.
Captain Casey McManus commented on the boat entering the rough waters.

With 19 seasons and multiple spinoffs, Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch is a reality TV institution. The show, which premiered in 2005, follows crab fishermen working in the icy and treacherous waters of the Bering Sea. The popular show reels viewers in with its unvarnished look at the rough-and-tumble world of commercial fishing. But not everyone who participates in the show was initially sold on the idea. Captain ‘Wild’ Bill Wichrowski has said that when he first heard about the series, he wasn’t eager to sign on.

These days Wichrowski is a fixture on Deadliest Catch. But he actually wasn’t part of the show’s initial cast. He joined the series in season 6, which aired in 2010. The Great Recession had just happened, and the economic downturn prompted him to say yes to filming.

Deadliest Catch fans have seen many captains and crew members come and go since it premiered in 2005. Some have made a bigger impression than others, including Phil Harris, one of the show’s most memorable cast members. The captain of the F/V Cornelia Marie was a fixture on the Discovery Channel series in its early seasons, but he died suddenly in 2010 at the age of 53.
After Harris’ death, his sons Jake Harris and Josh Harris took over the family fishing business. Their efforts to carry on their late father’s legacy were chronicled on Deadliest Catch. But both Josh and Jake have since left the show. Josh’s exit came after some disturbing information about his past resurfaced in 2022, but Jake left Deadliest Catch much earlier.

Discovery Channel’s reality series Deadliest Catch has been going strong for 19 seasons. The show, which follows fishermen as they head out into the harsh Bering Sea to hunt for crab, has also spawned several spinoffs, including Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove, Deadliest Catch: The Viking Returns, and Deadliest Catch: Bloodline. The latter followed two Deadliest Catch cast members – Josh Harris and Casey McManus – as they fished Hawaii’s Kona Coast. But the show, which premiered in 2020, is no longer available to stream on discovery+ and likely won’t return for season 4. Here’s why.

Fishing is a family business for many of the people who appear on Deadliest Catch. But carrying on that legacy can be difficult and dangerous. Perhaps it’s no surprise that Captain Phil Harris, who appeared on the Discovery Channel reality series until his death in 2010, urged his son to give up crabbing.

If the Discovery Channel was angling for a hit show, then they hauled it in with the “Deadliest Catch,” which premiered in 2005 and has aired every year since.
The documentary series, narrated by Mike Rowe, follows crab fishermen and crab boats as they ply their dangerous and sometimes deadly trade in the Bering Sea during the Alaskan king crab and snow crab fishing seasons. The base for the crab fleet is the Aleutian Islands port of Dutch Harbor, Alaska.
Through the years of the TV show’s airing, it has proven popular around the globe, making the skippers, their crewman, and their boats, celebrities in their own right.
This year’s season, which kicks off with a two-hour premiere on April 19, finds the crews of nine crab vessels trying to cope with the Alaskan government shutting down red king crab catching for the season. You’ll also find them contending with the usual treacherous seas,...

The title “Deadliest Catch” wasn’t just pulled out of a hat for Discovery’s hit deep-sea crabbing series.
On Tuesday’s season finale episode, Cody Rhodes (not to be confused with Aew’s Cody Rhodes) must be helicopter-lifted off of the F/V (Fishing Vessel) Karie Marie’s deck — but first, a Coast Guard rescue swimmer must get to him first.
Two hours earlier, Rhodes “took the falling force of a 1,000-pound steel crab pod to his left leg, twisting the flesh and bone, resulting in a gruesome spiral fracture of his fibula and tibia,” series narrator Mike Rowe tells us.
