I feel like I did this already, but that was a decade ago, so maybe I need to do it again.
Also, and probably more importantly, the last time I talked about this book, it wasn’t actually available at my end of the Pacific at all, which made my praise slightly beside the point for most people. But, luckily, the Trese books are now coming out from Ablaze: the third volume hit in January and the fourth (which is beyond where I saw the first time around) is coming in May.
But, here we are with Trese 2: Unreported Murders , collecting what were four issues of the floppy-comics series of the same name, originally published in the Philippines sometime in the mid-Aughts. (See also my post from last year on the first book in its Ablaze edition.) Trese is our main character: Alexandra Trese, who runs a bar in...

Based on the homonymous Filipino komik series written by Budjette Tan and illustrated by Kajo Baldisimo, which was first published in 2005 and has won a number of awards, “Trese” was promoted as an anime-influenced streaming television title, although its aesthetics point more towards an American style. Let us take things from the beginning though.
“When the sun sets in the city of Manila, don’t you dare make a wrong turn and end up in that dimly- lit side of the metro, where blood-sucking aswang run the most-wanted kidnapping rings, where gigantic kapre are the kingpins of crime, and magical engkantos slip through the cracks and steal your most precious possessions. When crime takes a turn for the weird, the police call Alexandra Trese.” (Ablaze Comics). This is exactly the world Trese inhabits, a world where creatures from the Filipino folk myths coexist with humans, in a precarious balance that...

Netflix continues to build their animation slate as they’ve announced five new anime titles that will produce. Two of those projects include anime series for Pacific Rim and Altered Carbon!
I love that Netflix is expanding on their animation projects. They’ve made some great animated films and series in the past and it’s exciting to see that we are going to get more of that. Alos, the projects that they are developing sound awesome!
Thanks to Deadline, we have details to share on all five the new anime projects:
Pacific Rim, “which expands the world of the two live-action movies of the same name, returns to the epic battle of Kaiju and Jaegers. The original anime series follows two siblings — an idealistic teenage boy and his naïve younger sister — who are forced to pilot an abandoned Jaeger across a hostile landscape in a desperate attempt to find their missing parents.

On Wednesday at its first ever Asian content showcase, Netflix announced five new anime projects, including a series based on “Pacific Rim,” a feature film set in the “Altered Carbon” universe, and a new series featuring the voice of Lakeith Stanfield.
At “See What’s Next: Asia” held in Singapore, Netflix also announced two Thai language originals, a Chinese language original, and a second season renewal for its upcoming Korean fantasy drama “Kingdom,” the first season of which premieres on the streaming service Jan. 25.
Heading up the anime slate is “Pacific Rim” from showrunners Craig Kyle (“Thor: Ragnarok”) and Greg Johnson (“X-Men: Evolution.”) The series will expand on the story of giant robots vs. kaiju from the first two live action movies and will follow two siblings, an idealistic teenage boy and his naïve younger sister, forced to pilot an abandoned Jaeger across a hostile landscape in a desperate attempt to find their missing parents.

There is a great urban-fantasy comic from the Philippines called Trese. I’ve written about the first three volumes here a few years ago — and there have been three more volumes since then, plus a seventh in progress.
The books are difficult to find on this side of the Pacific, though. And that’s a huge shame: this is damn good stuff, as fantasy, as detective stories, as modern reworkings of folktale material, and as comics.
Well, you’re finally in luck.
Trese creators Budjette Tan and KaJo Baldismo have launched an IndieGogo campaign for a global edition of Trese — starting from the beginning for those of you who haven’t seen it before.
A digital edition of the first comic is a measly two bucks. That’s a steal.
I’ve already backed it, and kicked in an extra donation to help out. Go check it out yourself , and...
