A Chiara (Jonas Carpignano)
Writer-director Jonas Carpignano completes his Calabrian trilogy with A Chiara, an enthralling drama about a teenage girl coming to terms with her family’s role in the mafia, which won the Europa Cinema Label at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. With a documentary-like authenticity, this is a touching, powerful film with a lyrical visual palette and a superb sense of time and place. As in Mediterranea and A Ciambra, which told stories about immigration and the Roma community, respectively, Carpignano takes us to Gioia Tauro at the southern tip of the Italian mainland. For ten years the director has embedded himself here, a place infamous for the penetration in all walks of life of the ‘Ndrangheta, the secretive...

For the second year running, Sheffield DocFest’s flagship pitching forum MeetMarket is taking place virtually. That’s not holding back the number of projects applying: MeetMarket has had more than 550 applications this year. From these, MeetMarket has selected 55 projects, which will have the chance to present to more than 300 international funders, broadcasters, distributors, festival programmers and exhibitors.
They will be seeking to follow in the footsteps of high-profile documentaries that have previously come through MeetMarket while looking for funding or partners, including Malik Bendjelloul’s “Searching for Sugarman,” Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The Act of Killing” and Nanfu Wang’s “One Child Nation.”
Sheffield DocFest head of industry Patrick Hurley says there were concerns about the number and nature of projects that might apply this year, given the background of the pandemic. Would the wheels still be turning on projects preparing to pitch? Would they qualitatively be different because of travel bans and restrictions?...

Crestone (Marnie Ellen Hertzler)
Exploring the bohemian lives of SoundCloud rappers who find their own oasis (or perhaps are living in a mirage of one) in the middle of the Colorado desert, Crestone is a brief, but complicated look at such a way of life. With a breezy Animal Collective score guiding the rather beautiful imagery, director Marnie Ellen Hertzler is also keen on showing the failures that come with such a life off the grid. Cuisines featuring terrible-looking bologna sandwiches and ketchup-infused ramen along with donation pleas for an $80K GoFundMe with $0 pledged show this escape from society may not be the luxurious, meditative experience as promoted on...

Deep in the desert of Crestone, Colorado live a group of Soundcloud rappers who live carefree off the land, growing marijuana, recording music, and posting goofy videos to Instagram? Crestone, Marnie Ellen Hertzler’s debut feature, journeys deep into the isolated, sandy abyss, placing her camera amongst an eccentric group of lost boys who have no use for the outside world, even as it steadily burns around them. If influential TikTokers can erect a California-based Hype House to stock up on “content creators,” Crestone is as appropriate a place as any to discover where these wild things are. The most intriguingly cinematic movies are often the ones in which the characters presented on screen and the filmmakers behind the camera are constantly reinventing themselves to adapt to any situation they find themselves in. That’s certainly the case for both the subjects and director of the new documentary, ‘Crestone.’ Helmer Marnie Ellen Hertzler, who […]

If someone were to ask you about Crestone, Colorado, you likely won’t have much to say about the town. It’s a fairly nondescript mountain town that is definitely beautiful. But honestly, it’s no Denver, right? Well, it’s the center of the universe for a group of SoundCloud rappers in the new documentary, aptly titled “Crestone.”

"There's not a point where we're not reinventing ourselves." Utopia has unveiled a trailer for an indie doc titled Crestone, made by filmmaker Marnie Ellen Hertzler. This premiered at the True/False Documentary Film Festival last year, and stopped by a number of other fests, arriving on VOD in February. In the desert of Crestone, Colorado (on Google Maps), a group of SoundCloud rappers live in solitude, growing weed and making music for the internet. When an old friend arrives to make a movie, reality and fiction begin to blur. The doc film is described in reviews as "the most fascinating intersections between form and content I can remember since Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze fucked with it in Adaptation." That one quote intrigues me more than the synopsis. To top it off, the film also features a score by Animal Collective's Geologist & Deakin. This looks like some wild, gonzo...

While there’s the chance Animal Collective may release a new album this year––their first in five years––first up they’ve scored a new documentary. Crestone––which is written, produced, and directed by Marnie Ellen Hertzler in her feature debut––follows a group of SoundCloud rappers in the Colorado desert.
Ahead of a release on February 16, followed by a soundtrack release via Domino on February 19, the first red band trailer has now been unveiled. With the score primarily by Animal Collective’s Geologist & Deakin, the first glimpse can be heard in this preview, which shows off quite an uninhibited life in the wilderness.
A selection at SXSW and True/False, Vox Magazine‘s Fiona Murphy said, “Hertzler’s style in this movie is reminiscent of Harmony Korine’s Gummo. Throughout the film, she captures crude moments of an exaggerated reality and reflects humanity in the souls of the lost and bizarre.

The coronavirus pandemic is still going on, and shutdowns are being lifted oh so gently. That generally means two things: go outside with a mask on while strafing away from passersby on the sidewalk, or stay in and watch stuff. Luckily, The Criterion Channel has announced its June 2020 lineup, which is full of things old and new.
June sees the streaming premiere of Bertrand Bonello’s fantasy-horror, Zombi Child, which originally premiered in the Director’s Fortnight section of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. The month also brings us the Channel’s addition of Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho, which comes with deleted scenes, a making-of documentary, and more. Meanwhile, they will also flesh out the service’s Chantal Akerman selection, adding features such as One Day Pina Asked…, Golden Eighties, and her penultimate feature, Almayer’s Folly. ‘The Eyeslicer’: Cult Variety Streaming Series Shifts Offline With New Festival and More — Exclusive
Cult variety TV show “The Eyeslicer” is gearing up for its second season, one that will move the streaming series into the terrestrial world with a brand new mini film festival, taking place in Brooklyn from September 14 to 17. The brainchild of creators Dan Schoenbrun and Vanessa McDonnell, the episodic series invites some of independent film’s most exciting directors to embrace their weird and experimental side in making a variety of short content, which is then weaved into thematic episodes.
The 13-episode Season 2 of “The Eyeslicer” will feature work from over 70 filmmakers, offerings that the co-creators describe as “a deep-dive into the strange, dark heart of our contemporary American hellscape, while also being an optimistic celebration of independent art-making within said hellscape.”
Starting with this new season, the internet will no longer be the series’ principal platform, but it will instead use a unique, zine-inspired mini-festival in Brooklyn and the...

Currently making the rounds with her Locarno/Rotterdam selected short Hi I Need To Be Loved, Baltimorean video artist/filmmaker Marnie Ellen Hertzler will likely be unpacking her feature debut sometime this year. Diverging from the traditional narrative storytelling, Hertzler truly imbeds herself in her feature debut Crestone, at once, a tale of day-to-day survivalism of a wolfpack and, an unflinching docu on ingenuity, creativity and how art fills the soul and belly. Crestone was among the quartet of projects featured at the 2018 Us in Progress – American Film Festival in Wrocław. Here is my sit-down with Marnie Ellen Hertzler.…...
