Not bad for a story of a bored but determined girl who followed a nervous rabbit, moaning that he was getting late, into a bizarre underground world, and then, climbed through a mirror into a parallel world, set out like a chess board.
And in her peregrinations through these strange illogical worlds, she meets the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the King and Queen of Hearts, the Gryphon, the Jabberwock, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, Humpty Dumpty, the White Knight, and a host of many more.
‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ (1865), or ‘Alice in Wonderland’, as it is more popularly known, and its sequel ‘Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There’ (1871-2) (‘Through the Looking-Glass’ more commonly) stand high both by themselves, and the adaptations that they have inspired across various media.

This post contains spoilers for the season 2 finale of "Yellowjackets."
The second season of Showtime's "Yellowjackets" ended last night, and while all the characters — both the adult and teen versions — have certainly been through more than a few trials and tribulations, Natalie — played by Juliette Lewis as an adult and Sophie Thatcher in the '90s storyline — arguably gets the worst of it.
Adult Natalie, of course, tragically dies in the finale after Misty (Christina Ricci) accidentally injects her with a fatal dose of phenobarbital. But teen Natalie isn't doing so great either, and it all started in episode 8 after she draws the fatal Queen of Hearts in the girls' new cannibalism ritual, marking her as the next Yellowjacket to be served up for dinner.
It turns out that Natalie drawing that ill-fated card was a surprise to Thatcher as well. And when /Film's Ben Pearson interviewed her for "The Boogeyman,...

This article contains spoilers through Yellowjackets season 2 episode 8.
The Yellowjackets pilot hinted at the ritualistic cannibalism that the titular girls soccer team was forced to adopt after being stranded in the wilderness for nineteen months, but we’ve yet to see the girls fully become the cult-like group we see in the series’ opening. The “Doomcoming” episode from season 1 showed the girls chasing Travis (Kevin Alves) through the woods while high on mushrooms and fermented berries, but they were stopped before things escalated any further.
After Jackie (Ella Purnell) was eaten at the beginning of season 2, however, it was only a matter of time before the teens were forced to resort to cannibalism once again to survive the harsh winter. To help Lottie (Courtney Eaton) heal from the life-threatening wounds inflicted on her by Shauna (Sofie Nélisse) in a post-partum fit of rage, the teens decide to sacrifice someone from...

“‘What this place wants from us is violence. I know what’s required from us,’ is what she’s thinking,” says Liv Hewson of their character, teenage Van, in this devastating eighth installment of Yellowjackets. In our latest episode of The Buzz on Yellowjackets (be sure to watch the whole thing!), Hewson tells us it was Van who came up with the idea to use the card-drawing ritual (already in place to assign chores) to randomly decide who the group would kill and eat. Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) pulls the designated death card (the Queen of Hearts that Javi [Luciano Leroux] found while he was alone in the wilderness). The others’ cards may hold meaning, too, but on a different level. Hewson says, “The cards that we pull are in the scripts. When we got there on the day and were planning how to film it, it was like ‘Ok, do...

Many things have influenced Paul McCartney‘s songs over the years. Sometimes a single tune had multiple inspirations, including The Beatles‘ “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer.” Here are all the references in the Abbey Road song.
The Beatles’ Paul McCartney | McCarthy/Getty Images Alfred Jarry inspired Paul McCartney to write an obscure lyric in The Beatles’ ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer’
In his book The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul explained that while he was driving down the highway one day, he heard a broadcast of Ubu Cocu on BBC Radio 3.
Ubu Cocu is one of three plays, including the better-known Ubu Roi, by the French dramatist Alfred Jarry. It’s subtitled “a pataphysical extravaganza.” Paul said “pataphysical” is a word Jarry made up to “poke fun at toffee-nosed academics.”
Paul liked the word and decided to add it to The Beatles’ “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer.” He was thrilled when he could rhyme “quizzical” with “pataphysical.
