“Everything Everywhere All at Once” is one of the few films in Oscars history to win Best Picture, Best Director and Best Editing plus prizes for acting and writing. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert won Best Director and Best Original Screenplay while they shared in the Best Picture win with Jonathan Wang. Paul Rogers took home Best Film Editing while the film claimed three acting victories: Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, Best Supporting Actress for Jamie Lee Curtis, and Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan.
“Forrest Gump” was the last movie to win these top awards. it won Best Picture in 1995 for Wendy Finerman, Steve Starkey, and Steve Tisch while Robert Zemeckis won Best Director, Tom Hanks won Best Actor, Eric Roth won Best Adapted Screenplay, and Arthur Schmidt won Best Editing.

In a multi-screen digital world, Google’s search world has become increasingly key to marketing movies to a worldwide audience — especially in the run-up to opening weekends.
With Barbie and Oppenheimer making waves at the multiplex last summer, Barbenheimer had an unsurprisingly ripple effect for both tentpoles — as they topped the Google Trends table for the most movie queries made worldwide in 2023.
Google Trends tracks user searches, including on YouTube where trailers impact movie picks for cinema-goers. Much depends on demographics and regional appeal, of course, as this year’s table for Google Trends was topped by movies as disparate as titles about an iconic Mattel doll movie, the father of the nuclear bomb and a child trafficking drama.
So, let’s dig deeper into Google’s global search results for the past year, which are revealed to have tracked pretty well in box office trends.

Chelsea Handler has agreed to return as host of the 29th Annual Critics Choice Awards set to air live on The CW on January 14, 2024. Handler did a terrific job of hosting the 2023 awards show, and the Cca is pleased she agreed to handle the hosting gig for the second consecutive year.

Exclusive: Last year’s awards cycle was a big one for indie public relations firm EBComs, which specializes in behind-the-camera talent. Out of the year’s five cinematography Oscar nominees, three were EBComs clients, and the company ultimately walked away with two wins —James Friend and Paul Rogers. This month, the company, headed by Aussie native Meredith Emmanuel, celebrates its 25th anniversary.
Emmanuel launched the indie firm in 1998, which has quietly grown in size and ambition. The company, headquartered in Los Angeles, now spans a network of offices in Sydney, and London. In 2022, Emmanuel expanded the leadership team, promoting three senior team members to partners: Ranjinder Hans, Vice President, Talent Relations and Awards; Mackinley Sullivan, Chief Operating Officer; and Mary Keeler, Chief Financial Officer. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the names of its newest round of invitees, increasing the number of voting members past 10,000, should everyone accept.
With the addition of the 398 artists and executives that the Academy extended invitations to (totaling one more invite than last year), the Academy now boasts a membership that is 34 percent women, 18 percent from underrepresented ethnic and racial communities, and 20 percent from countries or territories outside of the United States. Though their invites have a rolling deadline, they must accept them and pay dues in order to vote for the Oscars and gain access to benefits like the Academy Screening Room.
Among the list of possible new members are, predictably, many of the filmmakers behind Best Picture winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” including Best Supporting Actor winner Ke Huy Quan, Best Supporting Actress nominee Stephanie Hsu, Best Film Editing winner Paul Rogers,...

The Oscar-winning writing-directing unit of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, whimsically known as Daniels, have yet to trade in their golden chit and announce their next project. But with 2022’s juggernaut “Everything Everywhere All At Once” winning Best Picture, Best Director(s), Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress (for Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actress (for Jamie Lee Curtis), Best Supporting Actor (for Ke Huy Quan), and Best Editing (for Paul Rogers), plus four additional nominations, on top of being A24’s most successful outing at the box office with a $107 million worldwide gross, you can imagine the sky’s the limit for these two.
Wisely looking to alleviate some of the “what’s next??!” pressure, the pair already have their next credit in the pipeline, at least according to the trades. Similar to a recording artist following up their career-making hit album with “a live one,” Daniels has (have?) already completed...

The Daniels are already in the universe where they’re Oscar winners – now they’re journeying to the “Star Wars” galaxy. The “Everything Everywhere All at Once” filmmakers have directed at least one episode of the upcoming “Star Wars” Disney+ series “Skeleton Crew,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The news comes after the series, which began production in September, reportedly wrapped filming in late January. The show, which was developed by “Spider-Man: No Way Home” director Jon Watts and Christopher Ford for Disney+, has kept details about its production tightly under wraps; the only cast member announced so far is Jude Law, and no other directors or writers on the show have been disclosed.
IndieWire has reached out to Lucasfilm, which said there was “no additional info to share at this point.”
It’s unclear how many episodes of “Skeleton Crew” the Daniels — or Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — have directed from the show.

Newly minted Oscar winners Daniels have set a course for the Star Wars galaxy. The filmmakers behind Everything Everywhere All at Once are working on the Disney+ series Skeleton Crew, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
The series began filming over the summer and wrapped in recent months, but as with all things Star Wars, the show has been shrouded in secrecy, with the directors unknown. The complete list of helmers of The Mandalorian season three, for example, was not revealed until a trailer drop two months ahead of the premiere.
It is not known if Daniels are directing just one episode, or multiple, of Skeleton Crew. Lucasfilm could not be reached for comment on the story, which the site One Take News first reported.

For Paul Rogers, whose work on Everything Everywhere All at Once won him the Oscar in film editing on Sunday, the night was particularly special because he spent it with dozens of people who helped make the A24 hit.
“Everyone who was nominated [from Everything Everywhere] used their additional tickets to bring crew members. So we had a ton of crew at the Oscars, which is why whenever you would see Everything Everywhere announced, you would just hear this eruption,” Rogers says on the latest episode of the Behind the Screen podcast. “We had, I don’t know, 40, 50 crew members in the audience.”
Following the Governors Ball, the team boarded a party bus for the “surreal” Vanity Fair party, followed by the A24 celebration.
He admits he’s still “pretty starstruck” around best actress recipient Michelle Yeoh and “it’s been really nice to get to know her through this whole process, and...

No shenanigans as Academy went with experience and expertise.
In urgent need of a credibility reset after last year’s shenanigans the 95th Academy Awards delivered a reassuringly conventional, star-laden show that harkened back to days gone by yet at its heart seemed to offer a glimpse of generational shift.

Jimmy Kimmel returned to preside over the 95th Academy Awards on ABC Sunday night. It marked the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host’s third time emceeing. He previously hosted the telecasts in 2017 and 2018, the former of which featured Envelopegate, when “La La Land” was mistakenly announced as the Best Picture winner instead of “Moonlight.”
According to our recent poll, Kimmel’s experience paid off. He received a 64% approval rating, with 38% of our readers saying he was brilliant from start to finish. The full poll results are below.
38% A – Brilliant from start to finish!
27% B – I liked him for the most part.

11% C – He was just okay.
8% D – Somewhat forgettable.

Michelle Yeoh is using her star power to impart some wisdom on the world. Yeoh took home the award for best actress for her performance in "Everything Everywhere All at Once" at the Oscars on March 12, and backstage after the show, she spoke about the importance of self-confidence and her faith in the inevitability of change.
When asked about taking up space in Hollywood as a person of color, Yeoh had some clear advice. "You should never be afraid," she said, per Buzzfeed. "If this is your passion, if this is your love, you have to stand up for yourself, and for what you believe, and for what you want to do. I'm still here today. Finally, after 40 years, I get this! It just goes to show we will win the battle. And that's what we're doing. So don't give up."

Vanity Fair’s annual Oscar party took place Sunday at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills. I have all the details from inside the event, which as usual attracted the most elite of the Hollywood set who poured in after watching Everything Everywhere All at Once score seven Oscar trophies including Best Picture.
We managed to get our hands on the guest list for the event, held in a 3,000-square-foot indoor reception area, with additional courtyards and other outdoor lounge spaces. The main bar, a prime gathering spot, was 40 feet long. The guests danced into the early-morning hours.

Go figure: The ugliest Oscars ceremony ever was followed a year later by perhaps the warmest celebration ever.
The 95th edition — which was held Sunday night, at a perilous moment for the motion picture industry and the Academy, the latter now under the new management team of CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang — was dominated by Everything Everywhere All at Once, a film that certainly isn’t for everyone, but apparently is for enough of the 10,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to prevail over formidable competition on the preferential (read: weighted/ranked-choice) ballot that the organization uses to determine its best picture.
This film from the warped minds of the Daniels — as in, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, colorful characters who were previously best known for “the farting corpse movie,” 2016’s Swiss Army Man — was made by a diverse and lovable company of artists...

Everything Everywhere All at Once got on a roll early Sunday night at the 95th annual Academy Awards, racking up early Best Supporting Actor and Actress wins for Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis respectively. By the time the ceremony was done three and a half hours later, the indie sci-fi movie about an immigrant woman and laundromat owner who saves the multiverse had racked up seven awards, including nearly all the heavyweights: Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Director (Daniels), Best Original Screenplay (Daniels), Best Editing (Paul Rogers), and, of course, Best Picture.
It felt in some ways like a sea change. Whatever you may think of it, Everything Everywhere All at Once was and is a genuine experiment in ambitious weirdness and unabashed genre filmmaking, a different animal altogether from conventional Best Picture picks of the past like Green Book or elevated arthouse fare like Nomadland. "Everything Everywhere All at Once" won best picture at the 2023 Oscars on Sunday, March 12, taking home the biggest award of the night. It wasn't exactly a surprise, though, since the movie also won best actress for Michelle Yeoh, best supporting actor for Ke Huy Quan, best supporting actress for Jamie Lee Curtis, best director and best original screenplay for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, and best film editing for Paul Rogers earlier in the night. The film had 11 nominations total, including another best supporting actress nod for Stephanie Hsu. Best actor went to Brendan Fraser for his performance in "The Whale."
Harrison Ford presented the group with the best picture award, which was appropriate since he worked with Quan on "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" in 1984. During his speech, producer Jonathan Wang thanked the movie's "brilliant and big-hearted" cast and crew - both...

Best Foreign Language Feature winner “All Quiet on the Western Front” won the Oscar crafts battle Sunday night, grabbing three prizes out of six for cinematography, production design, and score. That ties “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” for the most craft Oscar wins for an international feature. Edward Berger’s World War I epic from Netflix was also nominated for makeup/hairstyling, sound, and VFX.
Shockingly, Baz Luhrmann’s delirious musical biopic, “Elvis,” was blanked after also receiving six nominations, highlighted by Mandy Walker’s cinematography and the costume and production design of four-time Oscar winner Catherine Martin (“The Great Gatsby” and “Moulin Rouge!”). It was a particularly missed opportunity for Walker to break the glass ceiling again after her historic ASC victory. She represents only the third woman Dp to be nominated, following Ari Wegner (last year’s “The Power of the Dog”) and Rachel Morrison (2018’s “Mudbound”).

Everything Everywhere All at Once has taken home best picture at the 2023 Oscars, capping a remarkable journey for the scrappy indie film turned awards season juggernaut.
“This is for my dad, who like so many immigrant parents, died young, and he is so proud of me — not because of this,” said producer Jonathan Wang, holding his statuette, “but because we made this movie with what he taught me to do, which is: No person is more important than profits, and no one is more important than anyone else.”
The feature from Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) debuted a year ago at South by Southwest and became a surprise box office hit, grossing $106.3 million on a $15 million budget.
Dealing with multiple realities, the quirky A24 film centers on a laundromat owner (Michelle Yeoh) who transcends universes in order to defeat an ultimate evil. The martial arts-heavy project reinvigorated the career of Ke Huy Quan,...

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” capped off its run with the guilds by taking home a trophy at the Casting Society of America’s Artios Awards on Thursday. It had previously prevailed with eight of the other nine guilds at which it contended. It lost out only with the sound editors.
Two of its Academy Awards rivals for the top award — “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — did win over the sound editors. Those victories are among their overall hauls of four apiece. “Elvis” also prevailed with the cinematographers, costume designers, and makeup artists/hairstylists while “Top Gun: Maverick” scored with the actors, film editors and sound mixers.

The films in the running for the 2023 Best Film Editing Oscar are “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Tar,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Our current odds indicate that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10/3) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “Top Gun: Maverick” (37/10), “Elvis” (9/2), “The Banshees of Inisherin” (9/2), and “Tar” (9/2).
Five of the six individual cutters competing for the gold this year are first-time nominees, making for the category’s highest newcomer rate since 2018. In that case, Lee Smith emerged victorious on his third bid for “Dunkirk.” The current group of rookies consists of Eddie Hamilton (“Top Gun: Maverick”), Paul Rogers (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Monika Willi (“Tar”), and “Elvis” duo Jonathan Redmond and Matt Villa.

It’s incredible to consider that when the 37th South by Southwest Film Festival kicks off on March 10, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” will be just two days away from potentially winning a slew of Oscars one year removed from its own premiere in Austin. The A24 multiverse indie, nominated for a total of 11 Academy Awards, is currently leading our combined odds for Best Picture, Director (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert), Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan) and Editing (Paul Rogers).
“To Leslie,” the alcoholism drama about a single mom from West Texas starring Best Actress nominee Andrea Riseborough, also began its, albeit much quieter, road to the Oscars at the festival a year ago. But don’t think SXSW’s awards are any sort of harbinger, as the Narrative Feature Prize went to “I Love My Dad,” a dark comedy starring Patton Oswalt as a father who catfishes his son.

Tom Cruise's fighter pilot action hit Top Gun: Maverick was named Best Edited Film (Drama/Theatrical) at the Golden Eddies last night, in Royce Hall, Los Angeles. The appropriately named Eddie Hamilton won the respect of his peers for piecing together the action scenes from footage recorded in flight after Cruise said that CGI just wouldn't look real enough, and is considered largely responsible for the film breaking genre barriers and gaining Golden Globe and Oscar nominations.
Also having a good night was Paul Rogers, whose work on Everything Everywhere All At Once saw it win in the Comedy category. With its multiple montages and the precision needed to create different moods for different versions of the same characters, it was a stand-out entry and no-one was surprised by its success. Ace Eddies: ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ ‘Everything Everywhere’ win over Oscar rivals for Best Film Editing
“Top Gun: Maverick” got a big boost in its bid for Best Editing at the Oscars with a win at the Ace Golden Eddie Awards on March 5. It prevailed in the drama race at these awards bestowed by American Cinema Editors over two of its Oscar rivals –“Elvis” and “Tár ” — as well as “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Woman King.”
Another of the Oscar nominees, “Everything Everywhere All at Once ” won the comedy/musical category over the fifth Oscar contender, “The Banshees of Inisherin,” plus “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”, “The Menu” and “Triangle of Sadness.”
Since 1990, the film that came up with one of the ACEs went on to win the top prize at the Academy Awards 18 times, including the 2020 winner for best drama editing, “Parasite.” And in 10 of the 14 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, at least one of the Eddie champs was a contender for Best Picture.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” took yet another top film prize at yet another awards show on Sunday. At the American Cinema Editors (Ace) Eddie Awards, the maximalist movie directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert won Best Edited Feature Film for Paul Rogers’ work that stitched together all those multiverses. On the drama side of theatrical film releases, “Top Gun: Maverick,” edited by Eddie Hamilton, took top honors.
Surprises were few among the film winners, with “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” edited by Ken Schretzmann and Holly Klein, triumphing yet again. And “Fire of Love,” edited by Erin Casper and Jocelyne Chaput, followed up its recent DGA win with another victory in the documentary category.

Everything Everywhere’s Rogers thanked mentors, friends and family, including the Daniels, remembering cutting the movie during lockdown. He also urged diversity, saying, “We can choose what stories we get to tell.” Hamilton wasn’t in attendance and colleagues accepted, reading thanks to those including Tom Cruise and Chris McQuarrie.

Top Gun: Maverick took the marquee Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) honor and Everything Everywhere All At Once landed the top Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) award at the 73rd Ace Eddie Awards Sunday. Hosted by Ashley Nicole Black, the winners were announced live in a ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
Eddie Hamilton, Ace, edited Maverick, a film that earned Tom Cruise the Producer’s Guild’s David O. Selznick award at last week’s PGA Awards. The honor puts Hamilton and Top Gun: Maverick in frontrunner status in the Best Film Editing Oscar race, for which both Maverick and Everything Everywhere are nominated.
Since the turn of the 21st century, the Eddie winner for theatrical drama has gone on to score the Academy Award for Best Editing 13 of 22 times — but none of the past three years. In 2022, King Richard took that Ace trophy, but Dune went home with the Oscar.

Saturday saw awards season alight on the Independent Spirit Awards, which honours, as the title might clue you in, indie movies. And it was another big day for Everything Everywhere All At Once, which added seven prizes, including Best Feature, to its already impressive awards haul.
The awards — which used to be held the day before the Oscars, but shifted in 2021 – introduced gender neutral acting categories, leading to the likes of Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh competing against Paul Mescal and Jeremy Pope. Yeoh took the win for Eeaao, while the movie also scored Best Director for the Daniels, Best Supporting Performance for Key huy Quan (the latest in his apparent sweep of the category), Best Screenplay, Best Editing for Paul Rogers and Breakthrough Performance for Stephanie Hsu.
Elsewhere, Emily The Criminal's John Patton Ford took home Best First Screenplay, while Aftersun director Charlotte Wells won Best First Feature. Sarah Polley...
