Hopes for a Gaza ceasefire dwindled Thursday in the aftermath of a brutal attack in Gaza City in which Israeli soldiers shot into a crowd of civilians, killing dozens.
Health authorities in Gaza reported that Israeli soldiers shot at a busy crowd that had gathered to grab food off an aid convoy, the first delivery to the region in a month and that more than 100 people were killed and approximately 760 were wounded in the attack.

Update, 6:21 a.m. Pt: President Joe Biden said that he would ask the Congress to pass an “unprecedented support package for Israel’s defense.”
Speaking during his visit to Israel, Biden said that the U.S. will “keep Iron Dome fully supplied so that they can continue standing sentinel over Israeli skies, saving Israeli lives.”
As of now, nothing can move through the House of Representatives because Republicans have been unable to elect a new speaker. Another vote on Jim Jordon’s bid is scheduled for this morning, but there are doubts that he has the vote and increasing talk of empowering speaker pro tem Patrick McHenry with the ability to move legislation on a temporary basis.
The president also said that Israel had agreed that humanitarian aid can be transported from Egypt to Gaza. He said that is Hamas “diverts or steals the assistance, they will have demonstrated...

A viral clip shared online shows Vladimir Putin waiting to meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi during the second annual Russia-Africa summit. In the video, Putin paces around the room silently before straightening items on a table.
Anton Geraschchenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s minister of internal affairs, tweeted the video on July 27. Since then, it has received 15,000 likes.
Putin had to wait for quite some time for the president of Egypt.
This is not the first time that foreign leaders have made Putin wait for their meetings. pic.twitter.com/WSaO1UWayN

This isn’t the first time that Putin was made to wait before meetings. In July 2022, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan left the Russian president alone for about 50 seconds in Tehran, Iran while in September 2022, Erdogan and the leaders of Azerbaijan, India and Kyrgyzstan delayed their meeting with Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Exclusive: Multiple sources tell Deadline that the woman who filed the complaint against NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell for inappropriate conduct was CNBC anchor and Senior International Correspondent Hadley Gamble.
NBCU parent Comcast announced earlier today that Shell is leaving after an investigation by outside counsel; Shell acknowledged that “I had an inappropriate relationship with a woman in the company, which I deeply regret.” We have reached out to Gamble for comment; there has been no response yet.
Deadline has learned that Shell had a relationship with Gamble which started about 11 years ago and continued sporadically up until a couple of years ago when it ended. Shell was chairman of NBCUniversal International from 2011 to 2013 before becoming chairman, Universal Filmed Entertainment and eventually NBCU CEO in 2020.
The complaint was lodged within the past month, Deadline has learned. The matter went all the way to Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts through the...

One year ago, Lt. Col. Paul-Henri Damiba was a military leader on the rise. The 41-year-old officer had just overthrown Burkina Faso’s democratically-elected government and was about to be sworn in as the West Africa’s nation’s new president. Wearing a red beret and military fatigues, he appeared on TV and threw down a gauntlet. “To…gain the upper hand over the enemy, it will be necessary… to rise up and convince ourselves that as a nation we have more than what it takes to win this war,...

Egyptian heart surgeon-turned-satirist Bassem Youssef left Egypt in 2014 and relocated to the U.S. after his megahit show “El Bernameg” (“The Program”), on which he snarked at top pols of all stripes, became too dangerous to produce under the country’s current president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
Youssef has since kept busy stateside. But he recently returned to Arab TV with “Ask Bassem,” a non-political, yet revolutionary, show in which viewers meet with guests who learned how to use a plant-based diet to treat their illnesses. At the end of its 20-episode run, Youssef spoke to Variety about being back in front of Arab audiences and what he’s got in the pipeline in the U.S. Edited excerpts.
What have you been up to in the U.S. since leaving Egypt?

Egypt has had a serious problem with sexual harassment for a long time: Speak to nearly any woman in the capital and you’ll hear horror stories of verbal and physical abuse. Just last year, Cairo topped a survey of the world’s most dangerous cities for women, and the third most dangerous for sexual violence. Public attention was drawn to the issue in the waning days of the Hosni Mubarak presidency before the 2011 Revolution (it’s the subject of the 2010 feature “Cairo 678”), thanks to brave protesters who’d had enough. After the Revolution, activists were inspired to rally for change, yet when Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood was elected president, there was widespread fear that his conservative brand of Islam would roll back any gains made.

CBS News veteran Scott Pelley has egg on his face this week after falsely claiming on social media that the Egyptian government had issued a warrant for his arrest. The posts to both Twitter and Instagram were swiftly deleted Thursday morning.
“The post was made in error, it has been taken down,” a rep for Pelley told TheWrap on Friday.
In his original post, Pelley said the arrest warrant was a direct result of his recent hard-hitting interview with Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on “60 Minutes.”
