It must have been a tough blow to see the newly minted Man of Steel bow out of a project that potentially had franchise capabilities five days before shooting was to commence, but that’s exactly what happened when Henry Cavill left Stratton over “creative differences.” I have to give him credit for doing so, though, since interviews circa late 2014 have him sounding pretty excited about the prospects of bringing to life a book series (written by former Special Boat Service commando and current pseudonym Duncan Falconer) of which he seemed a genuine fan. You have to then wonder if Falconer’s own adaptation was the issue or that from Warren Davis II. Whoever’s to blame, the final result confirms Cavill’s decision. There’s little here to conjure any excitement.

Directed by Simon West (Con Air), this British spy thriller clearly fancies itself as the basis of a lucrative action franchise in the Bond or Bourne mould. Unfortunately, the action is decidedly sub-par and the central character is as dull as dishwater, which doesn’t bode well for its chances of future instalments.
Based on a series of novels by former Special Boat Service commando Duncan Falconer (who co-wrote the screenplay), Stratton centres on pint-sized Sbs commando John Stratton (Dominic Cooper), who’s tasked with capturing evil Russian agent Grigori Barovsky (Thomas Kretschmann), before he unleashes a deadly terror attack on central London. The mission has a personal edge for Stratton, as Barovsky is the man responsible for the death of his former partner,...

Dominic Cooper flexes his action hero muscles as a globe-trotting trouble-shooter in Stratton. Hired as last-minute replacement for Henry Cavill shortly before shooting began, the Preacher star does a serviceable job as the eponymous hotshot commando with the Special Boat Services, Britain’s equivalent to the U.S. Navy SEALs. But he is mostly firing blanks thanks to a creaky script and dim-witted plot. Screenwriter Duncan Falconer, himself a former Sbs officer, adapted this fast-paced Eurothriller from his own novels. Director Simon West aims for a kind of Jason Bourne or Mission: Impossible feel, but he falls short in budget, star power...

Dominic Cooper stars in the action thriller, Stratton. Any good? Er...
It says a lot about a film when its most memorable moment is an incorrect use of geography. The moment when a character is on a bus leaving Camden and is then suddenly in Piccadilly evoked the same noise from the audience of London-based critics that I imagine would have been emitted at the response to Thor’s ‘How do I get to Greenwich?’ question in The Dark World. It was a cacophony of snort-sigh-laugh that connoted that the audience had officially given up on the film. Even more unfortunately, that was also the film’s most entertaining moment, for Stratton is otherwise a pretty unremarkable caper: a by-the-numbers movie about a macho-maverick-man doing macho-maverick-man things.
Based on The Hostage - book number one of eight in the John Stratton series by Duncan Falconer – Stratton is about John Stratton (surprise!

Dominic Cooper is kicking ass in the Queen's name as the first trailer Stratton hits the web. The film is based on the popular book series by author Duncan Falconer and the film is directed by Simon West (Con Air). The story follows a British Special Boat Service commando as he tracks down an international terrorist cell. Check out the trailer and get rattled by Cooper not speaking with a southern accent like he does in Preacher below:
No release date is set for the film in the U.S. as of yet, but U.K. readers can expect to watch it September 1st. Would you watch this film? ...

Ian Fleming’s character James Bond was ostensibly a commander in the Royal Navy, but we rarely saw him get much action on any sea vessels aside from the odd shag after blowing up an island base. John Stratton, likewise, maintains a somewhat tenuous connection to boats, despite being a Special Boat Service operator in the British Secret Intelligence Service. At least so far as we can tell from this trailer. Maybe 90 percent of Simon West’s new spy thriller Stratton takes place on the deck of ships, and they just chose not to focus on that for this trailer. Fair enough.

Based on the Duncan Falconer book series, Stratton began life as a vehicle for Superman himself, Henry Cavill, before the Man of Steel bowed out of the project and Dominic Cooper took over. With his performance in AMC's Preacher getting a decent reception, the change up may not have been such a bad thing in the end. In the film, Cooper plays a Special British Boat Service commando tasked with tracking down a terrorist cell. Stratton is directed by Simon West (Expendables 2, Con Air) who's no stranger to big action and the screenplay was writer by novelist Duncan Folconer. Along with Cooper, the film stars Gemma Chan, Austin Stowell, Tyler Hoechlin, Tom Felton, Thomas Kretschmann, Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen and Jake Fairbrother. There is no official...

Once packaged as a Henry Cavill vehicle before the current Man of Steel was forced to bow out due to scheduling conflicts, Simon West’s (The Mechanic) MI6 thriller Stratton is still barrelling down on its 2016 release date, only this time it is Dominic Cooper that takes up arms as the titular agent.
Thanks to AMC’s live-action Preacher series, Cooper’s stock is rising and rising fast, and this time he’s delving into the secretive world of espionage action and biochemical weapons. Loosely based on Duncan Falconer’s novel of the same name, Stratton reads like your typical flick of a one-man-army going up against the odds, pitting Cooper’s Special Boat Service operative – yes, that appears to be a real job title – against a band of unruly terrorists.
Rounding out the casting docket are Gemma Chan, Austin Stowell, Tyler Hoechlin, Tom Felton, Thomas Kretschmann, Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen,...

Move over Reacher, Bourne, Bauer and to a lesser extent Christmas, because Stratton has stormed in. Who needs first names when you're an armed-to-the-teeth special forces operative? Dominic Cooper, as this first still demonstrates, certainly doesn't. He's in name-taking mood as the film's Sbs trooper tackles a range of terror threats.Stratton sees Cooper's titular hardman teams up with a Us Navy Seal (Austin Stowell) to battle an international terrorist. He's the hero of an eight-book series by pseudonymous ex-military type Duncan Falconer - the man also behind the screenplay - and an experienced member of the elite Special Boat Service (like the Sas, only with extra canoeing) seconded to a cutting edge corner of the British intelligence network. The movie, which originally had Henry Cavill in the title role, has been shooting in Italy and gets underway in London next month. Sounds like the Man of Steel can’t always please everyone. Henry Cavill has reportedly pulled out of spy thriller Stratton less than a week before production was set to kick off, leaving the Simon West-directed pic in a highly unenviable position.
Shooting was due to take place in London and Rome starting June 2 on the adaptation of Duncan Falconer’s novel series, about a Sbs (Secret Boat Service) agent for MI5 who embarks on a mission to stop a dangerous terrorist cell.
Everything had apparently been going well for Stratton as it locked down distribution deals at Cannes, but problems arose soon after, according to Gfm Films’ Guy Collins, who spoke to ScreenDaily about the shake-up:
“But just before leaving Cannes last Friday we were informed by the production company that they wanted to push the start date back by around three weeks to finalise some additional casting...

Before we catch sight of Henry Cavill reprising his Man Of Steel role in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, he’s committing to a variety of different projects, including this latest on from the director of Con Air. Variety reports that Simon West has signed to direct Cavill in Stratton, a special forces action thriller based on Duncan Falconer’s series of novels.
In the title role, Cavill will play a Special Boat Service operative who’s repeatedly sent into dangerous scenarios when British Intelligence are at their wits end. There are eight of Falconer’s books that chronicle Stratton’s adventures, but the movie is said to be based on the first, entitled The Hostage.

Back in November, it was revealed that Henry Cavill, not content with being the current wearer of Superman’s cape, had formed a production company and picked up a project about a special forces officer called Stratton. Things have moved on since then and now Simon West will direct the film. Cavill will star in the title role, which finds the military man and his team tracking down a pesky international terrorist. It’s all based on the novels by Duncan Falconer, a pen name for a former Special Boat Services operative who has channelled his experiences into the eight-book series. West will start the cameras whirring this summer in the UK.“I’ve long wanted to tell a story about the British Special Forces and finally the opportunity has come around. Duncan Falconer’s work is fantastic and we are incredibly fortunate to be working with him so closely.
