After weeks of speculation, Cannes Delegate General Thierry Frémaux confirmed Thursday morning that Sam Levinson’s Euphoria follow-up The Idol will screen out-of-Competition at the festival.
Frémaux said he expects to see lead actor and co-creator Abel Tesfaye, who performs music as The Weeknd, on the Croisette for the premiere alongside co-star Lily-Rose Depp. The Starboy singer, Frémaux said, is a regular at the festival and has often traveled incognito to screen films playing in Competition.

HBO has released the second teaser for music industry drama series The Idol, starring Lily-Rose Depp and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye. (Watch it above.)
The teaser debuted last night at the Weeknd’s concert in Las Vegas, a bit of meta-positioning as the series delves into the world of pop music and all of its excesses. The quick-cut teaser flashes plenty of skin and hints of debauchery. “That’s sex,” one character says with eyes glued to her smart phone. “That’s what we’re selling.”
Co-created by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, The Idol is set against the backdrop of the music industry in Los Angeles. It follows a female pop singer who starts a romance with an enigmatic L.A. club owner who is the leader of a secret cult.
The series underwent a creative overhaul in late April, with director Amy Seimetz exiting.

Hulu’s new anthology horror series “Monsterland” isn’t about the things that go bump in the night. It’s about the things that go bump within us, what makes us tick, what makes us monsters. It’s a vision of horror that showrunner Mary Laws was drawn to — in spite of her attempts to move outside the genre. Laws burst onto the scene in 2016, writing the script for the Nicolas Winding Refn feature “The Neon Demon.”
“The Neon Demon” set up Laws as a horror director, but she didn’t want to thermatically repeat herself. “I wasn’t really interested in anything that was like the slasher, blood and guts kind of horror,” she told IndieWire. Laws wanted to investigate character, and that’s when she discovered Nathan Ballingrud’s book “North American Lake Monsters: Stories.” Found within Ballingrud’s book were elements that spoke not just to Laws...

The uptick in horror anthologies over the last few years has been interesting to deconstruct. Seemingly gone are the days of productions like “Tales From the Crypt” which always winked at the camera while sating audiences’ thirst for blood. While that sentiment remains in the likes of Shudder’s “Creepshow,” most anthologies in that vein blend in social commentary, turning the horror inward to leave us with the message, more often than not, that the true monsters are within us.
It’s trite, it’s simplistic, and it’s at the center of Hulu’s new anthology series “Monsterland.” Based on Nathan Ballingrud’s novel “North American Lake Monsters: Stories,” “Monsterland” tells eight different stories about people dealing with loss, regret, guilt, and loneliness with a slight tinge of actual monsters thrown in. Those seeking more overt scares, a la “Channel Zero,” the aforementioned “Creepshow” or even AMC’s “The Terror...

The horror genre is a fun one in that it can go in many directions, but it is often dominated by men in front of and behind the camera. Hulu’s new anthology series Monsterland, which debuts Friday, subverts that expectation with a female showrunner and a cast and crew dominated by women.
Monsterland creator and showrunner Mary Laws was joined by actress Kelly Marie Tran and director of photography Anka Malatynska and director Desiree Akhavan at the virtual PaleyFest Fall TV Previews event to talk about the new series and how it champions female narratives.
“I think that its safe to say that as forward-moving as Hollywood is, I don’t think there are opportunities for women’s stories on screen, for women in leadership roles and for women protagonist roles,” said Laws. “I think so often I found myself in a room with a lot of men making...

Kicking off a month of streaming horror offerings that includes “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” “Welcome to the Blumhouse,” and “Books of Blood,” Hulu’s “Monsterland” enters the horror anthology world via an acclaimed collection of short stories, “North America Lake Monsters,” by author Nathan Ballingrud. Created by Mary Laws, who also wrote all of the best episodes, “Monsterland” is deeply melancholic, philosophical horror, the kind that imagines a world of creatures in closets and under beds, but posits that humans may be the greatest monsters of all.

Every streaming channel needs their flagship horror anthology series. Netflix has, at least, the ‘Haunting Of’ franchise which becomes “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” this fall and Amazon is going a slightly different route with a film anthology series that’s a partnership with Blumhouse Productions. Fear not, Hulu subscribers, the Disney-owned streamer has its own anthology series from Mary Laws called, “Monsterland.”

Exclusive: Leaping from last week’s Season 1 finale of Evil, Mike Colter is wasting no time getting truly scary in Monsterland. The star of the latest CBS series from Michelle and Robert King has joined Hulu’s horror anthology series.
The Annapurna TV-produced anthology series — which is full of encounters with mermaids, fallen angels and other strange beasts — follows broken people driven to desperate acts in an attempt to repair their lives, ultimately showing there is a thin line between man and monster.
Monsterland is based on the short stories from Nathan Ballingrud’s collection, North American Lake Monsters.
Colter will play Brian in the episode, titled “Newark, New Jersey.” It centers around Brian, a grief-stricken husband (Colter) who blames himself after his daughter disappears under his supervision. Guilty and despairing, he refuses to believe she is dead and is unable to move on with his life or be emotionally available to his wife.

The WGA Awards boosted a pair of movie screenplays into Oscar frontrunner status on Saturday night, handing its marquee Original Screenplay award to Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won for Neon’s Parasite, and its Adapted Screenplay award to Taika Wiatiti for Searchlight’s Jojo Rabbit. Both of the winning scripts are nominated for Oscars on February 9.
This year the guild wasted no time in its 72nd edition, awarding its marquee prizes early in the night in simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York. Many of the film-side nominees gathered in the Edison Ballroom in NYC, so as to make the shorter jump to the BAFTAs which are Sunday in London.

The Writers Guild of America revealed its winners for the 72nd annual edition of its awards, which were held simultaneously at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and at the Edison Ballroom in New York City on February 1. About 15,000 WGA members vote on the best writing of the prior calendar year in an array of genres.
But beware Oscar predictors: Often a few film scripts nominated for an Academy Award are deemed ineligible. Only screenplays written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for the WGA Awards. That accounts for its relatively low success rate at previewing the eventual Oscar nominees compared to the other guilds.
Among those ineligible for consideration this year are some of the leading Oscar contenders, including the original screenplays for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Pain and Glory.” The former is by Quentin Tarantino,...

Hulu is set to develop a supernatural anthology series based on the short story collection by Nathan Ballingrud, North American Lake Monsters.
According to Variety, the first season will consist of eight episodes and the stories will revolve around vampires, fallen angels, and other monsters that force Louisiana natives to re-examine their broken lives.
The series is being created by Mary Laws, who will write and executive produce it. She previously co-wrote the screenplay for Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2016 film The Neon Demon. She also went on to write for and produce the fantastic AMC series Preacher.
This is the kind of show that I know I would enjoy. I love these kinds of stories and they’ve got a talented person on board to bring it to life.

European filmmakers seem to favor theme and concept over actual execution which may be one reason why American audiences appear so resistant to the overseas offerings. For example, Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn had a fairly interesting idea about exploring female villains, inspired by the real life doings of mass murderer Countess Elizabeth Báthory. He coupled that notion with the universal themes of youth and beauty, setting his tale in Los Angeles and the fashion model field. Unfortunately, despite a strong American cast, the European sensibilities failed to bring the ideas to life and The Neon Demon arrived cold, sterile, and thoroughly uninvolving. The film is out no on home video courtesy of Broad Green Pictures.
We open with a striking visual of a blood-soaked Jesse (Elle Fanning), attired in blue, prone atop a settee. Of course, it’s for a shoot and the 16 year old has arrived on the...

Jesse is discovering that the power of The Voice is a dubious one in this quieter but no less impressive episode of Preacher...
This review contains spoilers.
1.7 He Gone
Jesse Custer has had a sudden realisation as to the full abilities he has within himself. Not as a criminal or a person or a fighter, but as the carrier of Genesis, Aka The Voice. He can use it for good, as when he ordered Mrs. Lorch to forgive Eugene, and he can use it for bad like, you know, sending Eugene to Hell for annoying him with some righteous indignation regarding Jesse's abuse of his power. It's interesting to watch him come to terms with what he's done, as he does throughout this episode.
Of the characters on Preacher, the one that kind of draws the least attention is Jesse Custer himself. He's the lead, and yet...
