Bousman beckons you to step into a realm of fear this fall at Exiled: Crooked Rose Woods, an outdoor haunted house nestled in the sinister shadows of Bonner Springs, Kansas, just 25 minutes west of downtown Kansas City. “Those looking for traditional scares, be warned, this insidious event breathes, reacts, and transforms with your every interaction,” taunts Bousman.

When a horror film subverts your expectations, that’s almost always a recipe for success. One would be easily forgiven for assuming that St. Agatha would traffic in the same sort of territory as last year’s awful The Nun. Instead, while still thoroughly being a fright flick, this effort goes in a whole other direction. It gets pretty ridiculous towards the end, but for large swarths of the picture, it focuses on something grittier, more intense, and much more based in reality. By no stretch is this one of the genre’s best efforts, but it does way more right than it does wrong. The movie is a horror experience, tinged with religious extremism, or so it seems. Taking place in a small Georgia town during the 1950’s, we follow a pregnant con woman on the run named Mary (Sabrina Kern). Seeking refuge, she ends up in a convent...

On February 8th, St. Agatha will be making its way to theaters and VOD services and I recently caught up with director Darren Lynn Bousman to talk about his latest horror film. We discussed a range of topics, from updates to the film's story and working with his team from The Tension Experience, to fatherhood changing the types of stories he wants to tell, and creating an iconic villain in Carolyn Hennesy’s Mother Superior.
Can you talk about where the idea for this movie came from and what drew you to this project? Did you have any experiences with the Catholic Church or schooling growing up?
Darren Lynn Bousman: Ironically, no. One of the writers, Sara [Sometti Michaels], absolutely did, though. When I got the script, I was actually in the middle of doing The Tension Experience and the line producer of The Tension Experience says, "Hey, I've got this script.

For some people, the name Darren Lynn Bousman brings to mind the Saw franchise and his horror filmography. For those who love immersive experiences, myself included, I immediately think of Darren as a pioneer in immersive entertainment that is pushing the art form in new and exciting directions. Over the last couple of years, those in Los Angeles got to experience The Tension Experience and The Lust Experience, including it's all-year-running Arg (alternate reality game). This year, he's back with Theatre Macabre, along with producer Gordon Bijelonic and writer Clint Sears, creating an innovative venture with a new story that promises near-endless possibilities.
I recently had a chance to catch up with Darren Lynn Bousman to learn more about Theatre Macabre, and also got his thoughts on immersive entertainment, virtual reality, and learned about the challenges that these types of experiences face. We also have a brand new trailer for...

The best of the bunch in this anthology of vaguely interconnected shorts are the outrageous and uproarious genre pastiches “Friday the 31st” and “Bad Seed.” I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not impressed by most movies labeled “horror”
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Most horror movies don’t usually do much for me — I tend not to find gore frightening — and the ones that are supposed to be funny typically do even less: I tend not to find gore funny, either. But the little packages of horror and horror comedy that make up the new anthology Tales of Halloween offer among them a few gems that made me laugh out loud or shiver with their creepy atmosphere.
The ten stories here are vaguely interconnected: they’re meant to be occurring in the same Los Angeles neighborhood on the same Halloween night,...

To celebrate the recent release of the horror anthology Tales of Halloween (now available on iTunes and all VOD platforms), Daily Dead spoke to the filmmakers behind the movie to discuss the project, their individual contributions and more.
Darren Lynn Bousman exploded onto the horror scene in 2005, taking over the Saw franchise with Saw II and turning the series into a household name at the helm of the first three sequels. He has since balanced studio projects with fiercely independent, more personal cult films like Repo! The Genetic Opera and The Devil’s Carnival. His contribution to Tales of Halloween, “The Night Billy Raised Hell,” stars Barry Bostwick as Satan pulling a series of dark pranks on Halloween night. It’s the lightest thing Bousman has made yet, and also the funniest.

A good comedy can make people laugh until it hurts and a great drama can reduce an audience to tears, but nothing affects movies goers as profoundly as a terrifying horror story. The experience of watching a horror movie taps into the viewer’s most primal instincts, causing physical reactions like trembling, screaming and leaping out of one’s seat. Everyone has experienced at least one film that left them leering at dark corners and afraid to go to sleep. Horror stories and the anthology format are the perfect match. Anthologies allow for several features over the course of a single film, and each one can frighten,...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by an anonymous source. Directors/writers: Darren Lynn Bousman, Axelle Carolyn, Adam Gierasch, Andrew Kasch, Neil Marshall, Lucky McKee, Mike Mendez, Dave Parker, Ryan Schifrin, John Skipp, Paul Solet and Clint Sears. Tales of Halloween is an upcoming horror film anthology. Developed by Axelle Carolyn, this anthology offers ten tales of terror, from directors such as Lucky McKee (The Woman) and Ryan Schfrin. Each short tale creates either a creepy or comedic vibe. The best shorts, including "The Ransom of Rusy Rex," combine both of these tones. This viewer also enjoyed Lucky McKee's "Ding Dong," which is influenced by folk tales of old. Almost all of the tales are top notch. And, this film fan enjoyed the comedic ones the most. This is a film not to be missed by horror fans. There are simply too many tales to cover.

As a devoted lover of the current indie horror scene, there is no horror movie I was anticipating more this year than Tales of Halloween, an anthology film with contributions from 11 of the strongest voices working in the genre today. This is my event film. This is my Avengers. And it does not disappoint. Tales of Halloween isn’t just one of the best anthologies of the last 30 years, but also among the best Halloween-themed horror movies ever made. It’s funny and bloody and wicked and affectionate towards the genre in a way that few other films are. It’s the most fun I’ve had at a horror movie in a long, long time.
