Netflix is notorious for its perfect teen shows, and we bet you’ve seen at least one of them, probably Sex Education, Ginny & Georgia or Heartstopper. However, such series get even more interesting when they’re adapted from popular novels, with fans of the book ardently comparing the adaptation with their favorite nostalgic YA book.
The new underdog show titled Geek Girl is also based on a novel, and it does full justice to its best-selling original. It is now receiving so much hype that it’s holding the first place in Netflix’s global chart, topping Netflix’s bigger projects, including Bridgerton.
What Is Geek Girl About?
The show’s plot revolves around Harriet, an awkward 16-year-old geek, whose life is complicated by bullying and the feeling of not belonging to society. She struggles a lot to make it through coming of age, luckily, her life is about to be drastically changed.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Geek Girl Season 1.] Geek Girl, based on Holly Smale’s novel of the same name, finds Harriet Manners (Emily Carey) balancing two vastly different worlds. One day, she’s just a teenager in a small town, and the next she’s thrust into the world of high fashion modeling after being discovered on a school trip. Throughout the first season of the Netflix series, Harriet tries to navigate her new life while not forgetting her old one. Toby (Zac Looker) has been a friend of Harriet’s for as long as they can remember. He’s always been a constant in her life. When Harriet is feeling lost and unsure of her future, she turns to her longtime neighbor. In a monumental scene from Episode 9, Harriet asks Toby if he’s ever felt “out of place,” like a “polar bear in a rainforest.” Harriet admits she feels “alone” in the world,...

What Does 'Geek' Mean in Netflix's Geek Girl? Exploring the Series Title - Main Image
Exploring the 'geek' in Netflix's Geek Girl title is far beyond the literal meaning of the term.
Harriet Manners (played by Emily Carey) is described as an 'awkward' and 'neurodivergent' teenager whose normal life as a secondary student turns upside down when she gets spotted (and recruited) as a runway model in the series.
The main character of the story has always found it difficult to come to terms with the word 'geek' whenever her bullies labeled her as such, so what is the significance of it in the series?
Don't Take 'Geek' in Geek Girl Literally
Harriet first discovered the term 'geek' when her bullies called her that in the hallway and the first thing she did was search for its meaning in her carry-on dictionary.

I don’t generally intertwine my two jobs as a hustling Gen-Zer who is incapable of keeping her life together, but I’m making an exception for Geek Girl because it’s a show that centers on the fashion industry. An industry that is so remarkably unforgiving that I had to immediately leave my brain behind while watching Geek Girl. It’s how some of us felt after watching Emily in Paris. Nobody has it that easy, and nobody is going to be handing things to you on a platter that way. Geek Girl tells the story of Harriet Manners, a high schooler, whose life suddenly changes when she happens to be at London Fashion Week, thanks to her class winning a competition. She’s scouted by one of the industry’s biggest agencies and then taken on a journey into the world of all things fashion. Adapted from the best-selling novels by Holly Smale,...

Netflix’s Geek Girl is all things teen-drama fun. The English show starring House of The Dragon’s Emily Carey does require some suspension of disbelief. Especially if you have any knowledge of the workings of the fashion industry. However, it’s still an amusing coming-of-age story about finding one’s true self and owning up to your distinctiveness. The fashion industry is surely not as forgiving as it is in this show. Geek Girl tells the story of Harriet Manners, an intelligent straight-a student whose life is upended when she gets scouted as a supermodel by one of London’s biggest fashion agencies. Harriet’s not the kind of girl who likes attention. In fact, she’s the kind of kid who hates the spotlight and would rather hide in the corner. Harriet’s never been interested in fashion; it’s always been her best friend Nat, who obviously...

One of the trickiest aspects of HBO’s House of the Dragon was the way viewers spent roughly half of the drama’s first season with “younger” versions of our two heroines — Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower — before a time jump brought longer-term stars Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke to the screen.
That put a lot of pressure on Milly Alcock and Emily Carey to anchor those initial episodes, which they did extremely well. Alcock had the greater visibility, quickly becoming a red carpet favorite and setting herself up for the opportunity to play Supergirl. Carey’s first major House of the Dragon follow-up, Netflix’s adaptation of Holly Smale’s coming-of-age Geek Girl series, isn’t as high profile as joining DC’s House of Zor-El, but it’s a solid showcase for its 21-year-old star.

Despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, sales agents and distributors are convening in Santa Monica this week in the hopes of reconnecting with buyers and kicking off deal discussions at the American Film Market.
After an underwhelming Toronto Film Festival, which saw little deal activity, there’s hope that a few of the starry packages being shopped at AFM will get picked up. But given the climate in Hollywood, many projects won’t officially hit the market until February at the European Film Market in Berlin. The marketplace is not only strained by the strike but the shifting appetites and belt-tightening at the major studios and streamers. At the same time, the return of buyers from China to AFM after several years away is seen as a positive sign.

Emily Carey of House of the Dragon, Claes Bang of the recent Dracula mini-series, and Suki Waterhouse of Daisy Jones & the Six have signed on to star in the psychological thriller Walk With Me, which will pit them against “a nightmarish creature from Celtic mythology”. According to Deadline, this is a European co-production with a European cast and will be filming in Europe sometime in early 2024 – so it’s not being made under a SAG contract and will be able to go into production if the Screen Actors Guild strike is still going on by then.
Jonny Blair (River City) will be directing Walk With Me from a screenplay by Benjamin Farry (Cosmos Within Us). Here’s the synopsis: Teenager Ellie (Carey) struggles to connect with her emotionally distant father Simon (Bang) who has raised her alone since her mother died in childbirth. Oscar Wilde is known as one of the greatest wits in literary history. But he has brought some delightful eeriness, too, with works like The Picture of Dorian Gray and more. This month, one of his finest combinations of the two, the 1887 short story “The Canterville Ghost”, will arrive in animated form on the big screen. Now, we have a clip from The Canterville Ghost courtesy of Blue Fox Entertainment and Shout! Studios that, like the movie itself, is aimed at the whole family.
In the clip, host Hiram Otis (David Harewood) shows off “the new wonder of the modern world” – electricity – to his dazzled guests, only to be pranked by those channeling the spirit of Sir Simon de Canterville (Stephen Fry), who soon commandeers the spook….

Martin’s book Fire & Blood, which chronicles the history of House Targaryen, the dragon-riding dynasty that ruled Westeros for centuries before the events of Game of Thrones. The first season, which aired in 2022, focused on the reign of King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) and the conflict between his children Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) over the succession to the Iron Throne. The season ended with a bloody civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, which decimated the Targaryen family and their dragons.

Oscar Wilde’s short story is the basis for this energetic family cartoon, with a spirited ghost voiced by Stephen Fry and a brief visit from confrere Hugh Laurie
Here is a sprightly and good-natured pre-Halloween animation, based on the 1887 short story by Oscar Wilde; in vocal terms it reunites Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, though not for a double-act exactly – and it should be said right away that Laurie really isn’t in it much.
At the end of the 19th century, wealthy American Hiram Otis (David Harewood) and his family take possession of an English stately home: Canterville Chase, hoping to install a new-fangled thing called “electricity”. They’ve got it for a bargain price, because all the other owners have been scared away by the resident ghost, Sir Simon Canterville, played with genial aplomb by Fry. He now turns the frighteners on these wretched colonials, only to...

This story about Olivia Cookie in “House of the Dragon” first appeared in the Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
In HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon,” Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower are dueling heroines who ascend to a level of power previously unknown to the female characters in the world created by George R.R. Martin.

After a 10-year leap forward, they are played as adults by Emma D’Arcy (as Rhaenyra) and Olivia Cooke (as Alicent) and remain adversaries torn apart by ambition. Emma D’Arcy was feeling like a bit of a cheat. It was July of 2022 at the world premiere of House of the Dragon in Los Angeles. Stylishly dressed in an oversized suit and drop earrings, D’Arcy worked the red carpet like an old pro but never felt completely at ease among the hundreds of eager fans who packed the Academy Museum theater. “It’s like finding yourself in someone else’s life,” recalls the actor, who plays Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen in the HBO drama that’s based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. “It’s quite wild having never done that before, and certainly not on that scale, obviously, with one of the biggest shows in the world. And I am quite camera shy, which is obviously a disaster.”

It’s no secret by now that Ryan Condal knew the pressure he faced when launching House of the Dragon.
While speaking to fans recently for the recent Deadline FYC House + HBO Max Series, the creator of the much-anticipated sequel to Game of Thrones recalled how he became a huge fan of George R.R. Martin’s work after college and how the epic novel series A Song of Ice and Fire taught him how to write.
“Fast forward 20 years and be put in this position to be in charge of the successor to the biggest television show in the history of the universe was a lot to take on,” said Condal, who was joined on stage by Martin and several Hotd castmemembers at the DGA Theater in March.
“And one that won the most Emmys,” quipped the author.

George R.R. Martin is no newcomer to transformation. After “Game of Thrones” revolutionized the fantasy landscape and paved the way for genre series to achieve mainstream acclaim, he and “House of the Dragon” showrunner Ryan Condal set their sights on another mighty challenge by crafting a female-centric spin-off.
“If you’re going to make a successful spin-off or sequel, it has to have a reason to exist,” Condal said. “There were great female characters in the original show, but really, other than Cersei, no [woman] really ascends to power the way that both Alicent and Rhaenyra do in their own ways.”

In the nearly twenty years that pass in the first season of House of the Dragon, King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) is afflicted by a mysterious illness that causes him to essentially wither away up until his death in episode 8 “The Lord of the Tides.” While the show never explicitly gives the condition a name, due to his symptoms many speculated that Viserys was infected with leprosy – an infectious bacteria that can cause muscle weakness, skin lesions, and painful or tender nerves among other things. In an interview with Variety, Considine seems to confirm this diagnosis saying Viserys’ infection was most likely “a form of leprosy.”
But it wasn’t just a physical illness that plagued Viserys all this time. According to Considine, Viserys’ guilt over losing his wife Aemma (Sian Brooke) contributed to his deteriorating health, saying “How she met her...

“I said, ‘Who’s turned this down?’ Because I’m cynical that way,” he says. “My agent was like, ‘I assure you, they’re just coming to you for it.’”
Part of Considine’s disbelief was due to his feeling that the industry at large had only ever seen him as the working-class striver he made his name playing in the 2000s, in films such as “In America,” “My Summer of Love” and “Cinderella Man.”
“I felt like I couldn’t break free from it,” he says. “I was happy to act.

“House of the Dragon” looks set to, uh, cook up a storm at this year’s Emmys including bids for many of the cast. Among those most deserving of consideration is Olivia Cooke, who plays the older version of Queen Alicent Hightower in the HBO epic.
Set a century before “Game of Thrones,” “House of the Dragon” depicts the blossoming conflict between several major Westeros families after Paddy Considine‘s King Viserys names his daughter Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock/Emma D’Arcy) as his heir. This leads to various parties vying for the Iron Throne in the ongoing Targaryen war of succession. Alicent Hightower marries King Viserys and births a son, Aegon Targaryen (Ty Tennant/Tom Glynn-Carney), who later challenges for the throne.
As such, Cooke is a major player in “House of the Dragon” and appears in the last half of season one, starting with episode six’s “The Princess and the Queen.

Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
“House of the Dragon” is now well established as a record-breaking HBO success, but there was a time when that was not a given. Back in 2015, when “Game of Thrones” was still going strong, HBO knew it needed to prepare a follow-up to the franchise. Here’s how Ryan Condal went from the creator of a failed Pedro Pascal pilot to becoming the “House of the Dragon” showrunner and crafting a series packed with bloody action spectacle, sexy royal intrigue, and a new suite of engaging characters.
Back in 2013, when “Game of Thrones” was two seasons in, Ryan Condal had nothing to do with it. He was on location in Santa Fe with Pascal on would-be NBC pilot “The Sixth Gun,...

Rhys Ifans is best-known for playing offbeat characters in major motion pictures. He first came to fame as Hugh Grant‘s oddball roommate in “Notting Hill.” Since then he has stolen scenes as Luna Lovegood’s spaced-out father in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One,” the comic book villain Lizard (Dr. Curt Connors) in “The Amazing Spider-Man,” and rah-rah-Rasputin in “The King’s Man.” Against this collection of colorful characters, his restrained performance as Otto Hightower in “House of the Dragon” stands in stark contrast.
Otto is the Hand of the King (to Paddy Considine‘s King Viserys Targaryen) and the father to Alicent (Emily Carey/Olivia Cooke). He is “House of the Dragon’s” answer to Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) from “Game of Thrones” — the politico trying to pull the strings from behind the scenes and position his own family as the most powerful in Westeros.
