Called the Bookkeeper of Auschwitz, he was convicted in Lüneburg, Lower Saxony on 15 July 2015.
His on-screen contribution to the BBC documentary series Auschwitz: Inside the Nazi State (2005) ironically led to his prosecution for complicity in Nazi crimes against humanity.
