If Renate Reinsve hadn’t been offered the lead in Joachim Trier’s 2021 feature The Worst Person in the World, she was planning to quit acting and become a carpenter. After years of frustration with the roles being offered her in Norway, Reinsve had decided to try out Plan B: Learn woodworking and set up a carpentry school for young girls and women.
“I had just finished renovating my house,” Reinsve recalls, “and I really loved it, doing things with my hands, making something physical and real. So I thought: Maybe this is what I should be doing.”
But that call from Trier put Plan A back on the table. The Worst Person in the World, which Reinsve describes as an “anti-romantic romantic comedy,” premiered in Cannes and was an instant breakout. Reinsve’s performance as Julie, a funny and flawed, charming, chaotic and profoundly relatable 30-something who tumbles through jobs and relationships,...

Describing the warm, fuzzy optimism of an Idles record requires only the most pretentious adjectives — ebullience, exultation, jubilation — words that Idles frontman Joe Talbot would likely laugh at heartily before offering a pint to anyone who said them. This is a band who once titled an album, Joy as an Act of Resistance, and whose 2020 album Ultra Mono brightened the darkest moments of peak Covid lockdown with uplifting punk-rock mantras like, “Let’s seize the day … You can do it,” on “Mr. Motivator” and the chorus to “Kill Them With Kindness.

U.K. post-punks Idles enlisted Chris Martin — both the real one from now and the one from 24 years ago — to help them put together the video for their new song, “Grace.”
The clip is basically the same one Coldplay released all the way back in 2000 for their hit song, “Yellow,” with Martin walking along a dreary, empty beach in the rain. Only in the “Grace” clip is he mouthing along to the Idles song, a feat accomplished with a bit of AI deepfake technology.

Idles have shared a new music video for their song “Grace,” and it sure looks a lot like Coldplay’s famously melancholy video for “Yellow.”
In fact, it’s almost the exact same video — only in the “Grace” visual, Coldplay’s Chris Martin is singing the words to the Idles song instead. The video was created with deepfake AI technology to give the impression of a 23 year-old Martin mouthing the words to “Grace” in the same way he did in the “Yellow” video.
Idles frontman Joe Talbot claims that the idea for the video occurred to him in a dream, and shortly after having it, he brought the idea to Chris Martin himself. Martin not only approved, but later helped train the AI to make his lip-syncing look more realistic. To make things even more dreamlike, however, the video’s director Jonathan Irwin occasionally blurs Martin’s movement, offsetting the already uncanny presentation.

Through his lyrics, Idles frontman Joe Talbot often looks outward for love and healing amid the chaos of a broken world. By contrast, the British band’s fifth studio album, Tangk, sees him reaching inward to find it—despite the chaos around him.
One might expect a certain harshness or violence from an album titled Tangk, an onomatopoeia coined by the band themselves. But the very first sounds on the opening track, “Idea 01,” are lightly swirling piano loops and soft pulsing drums—trademarks of Nigel Godrich, who co-produced the album alongside Kenny Beats and band member Mark Bowen. “Idea 01” is a sleepy, slow opener, after which “Gift Horse”—whose tale of galloping freedom is accompanied by rich, clangy guitars and drums—offers a release in both sound and spirit.
“Pop Pop Pop” marks another quick shift in tone. “Freudenfreude, joy on joy, cheerleader, happy boy,” Talbot declares over a bed of dark synths and feedback.

The appearance comes one day after Idles’ electrifying show at The Bowery Ballroom in New York, where vocalist Joe Talbot dedicated “Gift Horse” to his daughter. The Fallon performance was just as high-energy as Idles’ usual live shows, and Talbot even changed the lyrics from “Fuck the king/ He ain’t the king, she’s the king” to “Fuck the king/ J Dilla is the king.” Watch their performance below.
Idles are gearing up to release their fifth studio album, Tangk, on February 16th. “Gift Horse” is the album’s third single, and followed the slow jam “Grace” and the LCD Soundsystem-featuring “Dancer.” The band has mapped out a lengthy 2024 tour throughout the US and Europe; get tickets to all US shows via StubHub and all international shows on viagogo.

Idles have shared “Grace,” the latest single from their forthcoming album, Tangk. Stream it below.
Co-produced by longtime Radiohead collaborator Nigel Godrich, hip-hop producer Kenny Beats, and the band’s own Mark Bowen, “Grace” is a slow-burning track that takes its time building to the crescendo. “No god, no king,” Joe Talbot sings on the chorus. “I said love is the thing.”
“The song came from nowhere and everything. It was a breath and a call to be held,” Talbot said in a statement. “The only words or singing that came from our sessions with Nigel and I needed it, truly. All is love.”
Tangk is out on February 16th and also includes the lead single, “Dancer,” featuring James Murphy. Pre-orders are ongoing.

Idles have announced their fifth studio album, Tangk. The LP is out February 16th via Partisan Records, and as a preview, they’ve shared “Dancer,” the lead single that features LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy and Nancy Whang on background vocals. Check it out below.
Idles drew from a wide swath of influences in making Tangk. The record was produced by the band’s guitarist Mark Bowen, as well as Radiohead’s go-to boardsman Nigel Godrich and Denzel Curry/Vince Staples collaborator Kenny Beats. A press release describes the project as more love-oriented than the post-punks’ previous efforts, which often dealt in political commentary.
“Tangk,” singer Joe Talbot said in a statement. “I needed love. So I made it. I gave love out to the world and it feels like magic. This is our album of gratitude and power. All love songs. All is love.”

Exclusive: A hot project just got hotter. Emmy-nominated Korean actress and model Hoyeon, who made waves with Netflix’s Squid Game, is set to make her feature debut in director Na Hong-Jin’s Korean thriller Hope, which we revealed earlier today.
She joins Oscar winner Alicia Vikander and Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender.
This is the first project from acclaimed Korean director Na since 2016 hit The Wailing, and it’ll mark Hoyeon’s first starring role in a Korean project since she made her screen debut in Squid Game.
The largely Korean-language film will follow the residents of Hopo Port, where a mysterious discovery is made on the outskirts of the remote harbor town. Before long, the residents find themselves in a desperate fight for survival against something they have never encountered before. Hoyeon will play a policewoman.
Additional casting and pre-production is underway for a shoot later this year in Korea.

Jonathan Majors is currently one of the hottest actors today. Majors joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Phase 4 as the next “big bad,” Kang the Conqueror. However, he has been in other productions before, and his notoriety grows with every project. The actor has a quirky trait involving holding a cup wherever he goes, even on red carpets. Majors reveals how his mother’s advice inspired this strange habit.
Jonathan Majors has had a rapid rise to the top
Majors’ first role was in the eight-part docuseries When We Rise. The actor landed the part while still at the Yale School of Drama, playing real-life gay activist Ken Jones. Majors met Jones to learn more about him before bringing his story to the screen. He also appeared in the revisionist Western Hostiles, which debuted in 2017.

Like many film fans, Tessa Thompson first noticed her “Creed III” co-star Jonathan Majors during the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, when he co-starred in Joe Talbot’s luminous feature debut “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” alongside Jimmie Fails. It's unsurprising how many have compared "Babylon," director Damien Chazzelle's super-charged elegy for early Hollywood, to "Boogie Nights" and "Singin' in the Rain." In its tensions -- talent and luck, apocryphal myth-making and the lesser-known truths, moral incongruity and creative spunk, and the critique of an apathetic business that nonetheless creates empathetic works -- Chazelle's "Babylon" bears some lineage to both films.
If you only focus on those influences, however, you will miss the primary tension: The fight between identity and assimilation. These politics, as viewed through the film's protagonist, Manuel Torres (Diego Calva), position Chazelle's behemoth vision closer to "The Last Black Man in San Francisco," "Medicine for Melancholy," and "Bamboozled" as an assimilation narrative affixed to a fable.

Adele has delighted fans by paying homage to a famous painting in the music video for her latest single.
On Wednesday (26 October), the singer released the video for her latest single “I Drink Wine”.
In it, Adele is shown floating down a river in an inflatable with a glass of wine in her hand, gliding past construction workers and men fishing while surrounded by synchronised swimmers.
Towards the end of the song, the camera pulls back, showing that the entire scene has taken place in a studio lot, with the sunset background really an animated screen.
In the last scene, she lies in the water surrounded by peonies in a gold sequin dress.
On Twitter, Adele thanked director Joe Talbot, writing: “Thank you Joe Talbot for creating a world for it and for putting the most incredible bunch of creatives together, you’re so talented and I’m honoured to have worked with you all!

A "cheers" is most definitely in order as Adele has finally released another music video from her "30" album. It's been a year since we were treated to the visuals for "Easy on Me" and 10 months since "Oh My God", so fans were long overdue another hit single. Adele teased fans on Instagram on Oct. 25 with a snippet of the video for "I Drink Wine," revealing that it was actually the first one she shot from the album. A day later, the full version dropped, opening with Adele floating along a dream-like river holding, of course, a glass of rosé.
As the singer drifts on the water, she passes a range of scenes, including a couple chatting on the banks, a little girl who throws a toy boat in the water despite her mother telling her not to, and a group of male fishermen, including "Insecure" actor Kendrick Sampson. She tosses...

Photo: ‘The Last Black Man in San Francisco' A spectacle of an ever-evolving city, ‘The Last Black Man in San Francisco’ is a breathtaking film that captures the beauty of authenticity. Written by the director, Joe Talbot, and one of the main actors, Jimmie Fails, the story felt incredibly personal as it was written about an experience Fails has gone through. Coming out in 2019, the movie was released alongside popular A24 films such as ‘The Lighthouse’, ‘The Farewell’, ‘Uncut Gems’, and ‘Midsommar’. As 2019 was a great year for A24, ‘The Last Black Man in San Francisco’ was the unsung hero amongst the other releases that depicted absolutely beautiful filmmaking and storytelling. With the vital themes of separation, culture, and family, ‘The Last Black Man in San Francisco’ is a movie all should see. Idles appeared on The Late Show ahead of their performance at Coachella to showcase their raucous, gritty single “Crawl!” Playing in close quarters on a venue stage, the U.K. group offered a high-energy rendition of the song.
“Crawl!” appears on the band’s most recent album, Crawler, released in November via Partisan. The album is a follow-up to 2020’s Ultra Mono. Co-produced by Kenny Beats and Idles guitarist Mark Bowen, Idles recorded the record during the pandemic at Real World Studios in Bath, England.

Without question, one of the most striking and gorgeous directorial debuts of the last few years was filmmaker Joe Talbot’s Sundance-adored picture “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” starring Jonathan Majors. A24 released that picture, and given all the acclaim, it’s no surprise the indie studio is backing his follow-up sophomore effort. According to Variety, the film is based on the novel “The Governesses” by French author Anne Serre with Talbot co-writing the movie with poet-novelist Olivia Gatwood.

Following her Best Actress win at Cannes Film Festival last year, we knew great things were destined for Renate Reinsve, but the question of what The Worst Person in the World star will do next was up in the air. Now, it’s finally been announced.
Deadline reports Reinsve will star alongside Lily-Rose Depp and Squid Game breakout Hoyeon Jung in The Governess, the second feature from Joe Talbot (The Last Black Man in San Francisco). Reteaming with A24, the film is an adaptation of Anne Serre’s 2018 novel, following “three rebellious governesses who upend the household they work in—inspiriting the minds of the boys in their care, igniting the imaginations of the bohemian couple who employ them and abandoning their charges for erotic adventures.”

Whether a viewer in 1896 or 2020, cinema has always been a dynamic and variable experience. Cinema as an event—as a manifestation of a meeting point between the art of moving images and an audience, big or small—has never fit any one definition, and this last year, so severely disrupted by a global pandemic, has deeply underscored the versatility and resilience of our great love. Our viewing this year, like that of so many, has been strange: compromised, confrontational, escapist, euphoric, painful, revelatory—encompassing all of the reactions one can have to film. How we encountered our favorite movies and most meaningful cinematic experiences of the year was hardly new: A by-now-normal mix of festivals, theatres, various subscription and transactional streaming services, as well as private screener links and gems buried on over-stuffed hard drives. But for most of the year, the communal experience shrunk to living rooms and glowing screens.

In Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, actor Jonathan Majors joins a stacked cast that includes Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis, Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Chadwick Boseman. But he is no stranger to starring in acclaimed films and TV series alongside some of the best names in the biz.
Majors’s talent has been seen Scott Cooper’s Hostiles, the Yann Demange-directed White Boy Rick and the Dustin Lance Black docudrama miniseries When We Rise.
