Mathew Rhys is Welsh by birth. But the Emmy-Award winning actor and star of the upcoming Babak Anvari-directed thriller, Hallow Road spent a good portion of his life in and around London’s West End.

He moved to the capital city at the tender age of 17 to attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and fell in love with the local pub scene not long thereafter.
More than three decades later, the actor — who’s married to Keri Russell, star of London-based Netflix series The Diplomat — has had plenty of time to consider his most cherished haunts.
Below Rhys, who’s also one of the voice cast members of the new film If, highlights a few for The Hollywood Reporter.

Prime Video is gearing up for the heist of the century with Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner. The streamer has given a series order for the new drama Haven, about an ordinary office worker who finds herself at the center of a high-stakes crime.

Comedy Central has handed a 10-episode order to Golden Axe, a new animated series based on the popular Sega video game. Produced by CBS Studios in association with Sony Pictures Television and Original Film, Golden Axe voice cast is led by Emmy winner Matthew Rhys (The Americans), Danny Pudi (Mythic Quest), Lisa Gilroy (Jury Duty), Liam McIntyre (Spartacus) and Carl Tart (Grand Crew).
Described as a hilarious and loving homage to Sega’s 1989 video game series, Golden Axe, from exec producers Mike McMahon and Joe Chandler, follows veteran warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they once again battle to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder who just won’t seem to stay dead. Fortunately, this time they have the inexperienced and underprepared Hampton Squib on their side.
Rhys will play Gilius Thunderhead, a grumpy battle dwarf with exceptionally poor hygiene and a chip on his shoulder.

“Between season 1 and season 5 is an entire life.” That’s a real understatement on the part of Sonequa Martin-Green in an interview with Den of Geek magazine, describing the five-season and seven-year journey of her character Michael Burnham, the protagonist of Star Trek: Discovery.
When we first met Burnham way back in 2017, she was the first officer on the USS Shenzhou, a Starfleet ship operating about a decade before the events of The Original Series, and under the command of Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). By the end of the two-part premiere, Georgiou was dead and Burnham was in prison for mutiny.
Things have certainly changed since then. We begin Discovery‘s fifth and final season with Captain Michael Burnham of the USS Discovery, but adventuring over 900 years after the events of the premiere. Yeah, it’s been a wild journey, one that incurred more than a little criticism early...

While it may have been quite some time since fans of The Office were asking for a reboot of the series with the original cast, there were no updates that would indicate it was ever in the cards. But recently, fans of the show were treated to the news that series creator Greg Daniels has a brand new offering for the audience in the form of his new project.
A still from The Office
While this is wonderful news, some people were still a little upset that they wouldn’t get to see Steve Carell reprise his iconic role as Michael Scott in the new series.
Yet again, fans were treated to good news when Daniels revealed that while his new creation might be completely original, it will be set in the same universe as his previous show, which has got fans hopeful for some of the iconic characters to return on screen.

Everything’s coming full circle with Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley). You will return for its fifth and final season on Netflix with your favorite serial killer back in New York City for one last round of mayhem. But will Ed Speleers be back as Rhys Montrose, the devil on Joe’s shoulder and figment of his imagination? “I would absolutely love a Rhys return,” Speleers tells TV Insider. “But as it stands, there’s nothing yet. If it ends up being Rhys isn’t involved, I feel very honored that I got so much from that and so much time to play because Rhys was a great part to play. Again, I’m privileged and grateful to Netflix for giving me that chance because it was a different way for me to work. But at the moment, no, I’ve not heard.” Speleers first appeared as Rhys in You Season...

To combat the ominous atmosphere of the Ides of March, Netflix has another Lindsay Lohan film, “Irish Wish,” which is now streaming. The follow-up to “Falling for Christmas” in Lohan’s deal with the streamer to make two films, “Irish Wish” focuses on love, luck and a little bit of magic in the rom-com that arrives right before Saint Patrick’s Day.
Lohan portrays a smart book editor, except when it comes to matters of her heart. It takes a wish granted by a mystical woman out in the beautiful Irish countryside to get Maddie to realize that what she hopes and dreams for might not be what she wants or should want in life.
Featuring music from Lohan’s younger sister, Aliana, and a guest appearance from her brother, Dokota, the cast is stacked with other familiar faces as well. We’ve rounded up the “Irish Wish” cast and...

Quick, who’s the most important person in Star Trek? Jim Kirk? Jean-Luc Picard? Morn?
No, no, and maybe, but not who we had in mind. The most important person in Star Trek is the character who has appeared in every series, except The Original Series: William T. Riker, the character immortalized by Jonathan Frakes.
Of course, Frakes played Commander Riker for seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation. His twin/clone/variant Thomas Riker showed up as a Maquis agent on Deep Space Nine, while Q shenanigans brought Will to the Delta Quadrant on Voyager. No one, not even Frakes, likes Riker’s appearance with Troi in the finale of Enterprise. But everyone loved Riker and Troi’s vocal appearances on Lower Decks. And, yes, it takes some fudging, but Star Trek: Very Short Treks allowed Riker to blast his trombone with the Star Trek: The Animated Series crew,...

The Inside Out 2Slgbtq+ Film Festival on Monday revealed 11 new recipients for its annual Re:Focus Fund, celebrating its fifth year of supporting filmmakers identifying as women, non-binary and/or trans.

Since its inception, the fund has been designed to respond to the immediate needs of filmmakers, and works to eliminate barriers to career advancement. There are no Black characters in Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ caustic family drama Appropriate, but they nevertheless haunt the play. They are the unmarked graves scattered over the grounds of the former plantation home in southeast Arkansas, where the story’s action takes place. They are the spirits, felt like a shiver by guests in the home. And they are the objects collected — hoarded, really — over decades by the estate’s patriarch.
He’s dead now, and Appropriate, which opened Monday at Second Stage’s Hayes Theater in New York, concerns the blistering reunion of his heirs. The production is the first of Jacobs-Jenkins’ original works to be on Broadway and is staged by Lila Neugebauer (Causeway), who directed the dramatist’s Everybody at Signature Theater in 2017.
Appropriate begins with the shrill whine of cicadas. As that noise quiets, others intensify: the sounds of bodies shuffling in the bushes and the grunts of physical exertion.

When I arrive, slightly late, at the small restaurant near Paul Rhys’s home in central London, there he is, all in black, camouflaged against the dark walls, a thick journal in front of him. “I have to write every day or my head explodes,” he explains, putting it to one side. He has 30 years’ worth of material, which surely would make a brilliant memoir. Bradley Cooper was supposed to team up with Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan briefly for this 2015 drama. But it was a collaboration that never came to be.

In the same year audiences saw him star in Fifty Shades of Grey, Dornan almost appeared in one of Cooper’s quieter films. In 2015, The Star Is Born actor played a tormented chef looking for redemption in the drama Burnt. The feature boasted an ensemble cast that included Daniel Bruhl, Alicia Vikander, and Uma Thurman. Dornan was initially recruited to be a part of the ensemble.
But Dornan’s scenes were soon cut from the feature, which led to a lot of speculation. In a 2015 interview with Entertainment Weekly (via Cinemablend), Burnt director John Wells cleared the air about Dornan’s lost scene.

There are numerous laugh-out-loud moments in Saltburn, Emerald Fennell’s darkly comic and voyeuristic exploration of the British aristocracy being released on Friday by Amazon MGM Studios. Despite the hugely impressive efforts of Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant, however, most don’t belong to the lead cast, but to Paul Rhys.
As Duncan, the imperious and terrifying butler, the Welsh actor silently steals scenes from under the toffee noses of both those he dutifully serves at the Saltburn mansion (including Pike, Grant, Jacob Elordi and Alison Oliver) and the lower-class interloper he’s keeping a beady eye on (Barry Keoghan) each time he appears with hilariously po-faced magnificence.

David Jenkins, creator and showrunner of Max's pirate comedy "Our Flag Means Death," didn't know that episodes four and five would be released together at the same time when the show's creative team was first dreaming them up, but he tells Popsugar the pairing "makes sense" to him. "With a half-hour show particularly, the episodes can kind of build on each other in a nice way," he explains. And four and five do that really well since the relationship between Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard, aka Ed Teach (Taika Waititi) goes through some big changes during that time.
"Four is kind of them coming back together and talking again and even working through some of the issues and seeing a more f*cked up couple than them," Jenkins explains, referring to the relationship between Minnie Driver's Anne Bonny and Rachel House's...

This post contains spoilers for the first three episodes of "Our Flag Means Death" season 2.
The second season of "Our Flag Means Death" has premiered on Max, and if you've watched, you know that one of the newcomers to the cast, Ruibo Qian, is playing someone who has a few run-ins with our beloved, Muppet-like pirates.
Qian also has something in common with the show's two leads — Rhys Darby, who plays Stede Bonnet, and Taika Waititi, who plays Blackbeard — in that her character, Zheng Yi Sao, is based on a real-life pirate who once sailed the seas.
Like the show's Blackbeard and Stede, however, Qian's Zheng Yi Sao differs from her real-life counterpart. "There's about a 100-years' time difference between Zheng Yi Sao and Blackbeard and Stede, so we're already inventing that they're all together in the same world," series creator David Jenkins told me an interview. "There's about a 100-years' time difference between Zheng Yi Sao and Blackbeard and Stede, so we're already inventing that they're all together in the same world," series creator David Jenkins told me an interview. "Zheng Yi Sao's...

The second season of "Our Flag Means Death" is about to set sail on Max, and fans of the show are more than ready to see the estranged pirate couple Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard (Taika Waititi) deal with their breakup at the end of season 1.
"Something got set into motion there that I think has to impact the entire world of the show in a big way," series creator David Jenkins told me in an interview. "It's hard to walk back from that, and there'd be no reason to. It's a joy to write to it."
Without getting into spoilers, "Our Flag Means Death" season 2 hones in on that romance as well as other relationships among the pirate crew of the Revenge. I talked with Jenkins about how guest stars like Minnie Driver and Rachel House came to be part of the second season, as well as who...

A sequel to this year’s Winnie the Pooh slasher movie, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 is on the way and in production now, and IGN shares new imagery today.
The sequel will feature Winnie the Pooh, Christopher Robin, Piglet, and Owl, we recently learned, and IGN confirms this week that Tigger will also be brought into the mix.
“Tigger is incredibly violent. He loves to torture his victims before killing them,” producer Scott Jeffrey tells IGN, teasing the twisted version of Tigger we’ll meet next year.
IGN also reveals that the reason Tigger wasn’t used in the first movie is because the character wasn’t in the public domain at the time. In 2024, however, he will be.
See more images over on IGN now.
“Bigger and Badder. The sequel will feature new creature designs, a new cast, and a high death count,” said writer/director Rhys Frake-Waterfield.

Made on a budget of less than $100,000, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (watch it Here) earned more than $6 million during its global release earlier this year. So it was no surprise to hear that a sequel was on the fast track, with Premiere Entertainment having secured multiple international distribution deals for Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, which would have a substantially larger budget than its predecessor. The sequel is now in production, and The Hollywood Reporter has unveiled a batch of first look images that feature Pooh and Piglet, as well as Christopher Robin and Owl! You can check them out at the bottom of this article.

Pooh Bear is back, but not the cutesy, softly-spoken and honey-guzzling children’s variety. This one comes with sledgehammer and a penchant for bloody murder.
The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively reveal the first stills from Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, the follow-up to the micro-budget British slasher that went viral last year for its childhood-bludgeoning premise, became one of the most talked about films of 2023 and would earn $5.2 million in the global box office after costing under $100,000 to make.

Stage and screen star Callow, who has also appeared in “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “The Witcher” among other fare, is set to play a character called Cavendish, who is described by the filmmakers as “a pivotal character with a dark past somehow tied to Christopher Robin.”
“Cavendish’s tragic life, marked with alcoholism, violence and regret, not only brings significant depth to the story, but revelation as well,” the producers tell Variety.
Variety understands Callow was approached via his agents and, liking the character, agreed to sign on for the role.

Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi premiered their latest movie, Nyad, at the Telluride Film Festival on Friday. The Netflix film, which stars Annette Bening as long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad and Jodie Foster as her coach, Bonnie Stoll, is the first narrative film from the married couple of co-directors, who won an Academy Award for their 2018 documentary Free Solo, about rock climber Alex Honnold, and also made the docs The Rescue in 2021 and Wild Life in 2023.
Chin and Vasarhelyi spoke with THR about working with actors vs. athletes, grappling with Nyad’s complex history, which included exaggerating some claims earlier in her career, and rolling out their film in the midst of Hollywood’s dual strikes. Nyad will also screen at the Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 12, before hitting theaters Oct. 20 and hitting Netflix’s streaming service Nov. 3.

A Canadian comedy podcast has come up with a novel way to promote their show- turn listeners into walking billboards. Canadian Politics Is Boring is paying its listeners to have their artwork permanently tattooed on their body.
After running for 3 years, the podcast wanted to find a novel way to advertise, and so far one listener has taken them up on the offer. Kyle Moist, of Fort St John decided that a space on his leg was prime real estate for the show's artwork.
“Having the chance to represent the work that Jesse and Rhys do to educate and entertain Canadians, while getting paid, was an opportunity I couldn’t let pass by. As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, for better and for worse, companies like Netflix are trying to find new ways to stay relevant and keep people coming back to watch their movies and TV shows over the competition’s. Netflix is well known for making the binge-watch model of release popular, with entire seasons dropping on the streamer at once to encourage viewers to consume a series as fast as they can. But now that weekly episode releases are becoming popular again for TV shows on services like Hulu, Disney+, and Max, Netflix seems to be trying to find a way to keep up hype for their shows beyond the first week a season drops.
Rather than entirely scrapping the binge-watch model, Netflix has instead chosen to adopt a hybrid of sorts where they split seasons into two parts and release them separately.

The clip starts off with Burham facing off against two smugglers, L’ak and Moll (recurring guest stars Elias Toufexis and Eve Harlow), who are in possession of a powerful alien artifact. Character actor Richard Brake has a lot of success in his career, racking up almost 90 screen credits over the last thirty years. Those credits include roles in Cold Mountain, Batman Begins, Doom, Munich, and Hannibal Rising, so he started getting cast in major productions with some frequency rather early on. But it’s interesting to see how much more prolific he has gotten since playing The Night King in Game of Thrones and Doom-Head in Rob Zombie’s 31. About half of his credits have come just in the seven years since 31 was released. Next up for him is The Gates, where he co-stars with John Rhys-Davies of the Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings franchises (in addition to over 250 other projects). The film is scheduled to receive a digital and VOD release in the US and Canada on June 27th, and a trailer for it can be seen in the embed above.

Welcome to My Favorite Scene! In this series, IndieWire speaks to actors behind a few of our favorite television performances about their personal-best onscreen moment and how it came together.
When Cate Blanchett first guest-starred in “Documentary Now!”, the two-time Oscar-winner played a part suited for her elite status. Directors Alex Buono and Rhys Thomas needed to cast for Izabella Barta, a Marina Abramović-inspired performance artist whose renowned work includes everything from sitting inside a rotating clothes dryer to flinging her paint-soaked body against a blank wall. Blanchett, no ordinary thespian, was the logical choice. If she can bring immediate veracity to both Lydia Tár, a pseudo-fictional character, and Katharine Hepburn, a very real Hollywood legend, then she can instill comedic credence to a legend of the art world, while perfectly serving the episode’s winking parody.
Her return to “Documentary Now,” however, somehow extends the actor’s range even further.

From 2013 to 2018, Joseph Weisberg’s “The Americans” thrilled audiences by telling a gut-wrenching story of a marriage dissolving against the backdrop of the Cold War — but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t time for fun in the writers’ room.
During a panel at the Paley Center for Media held on Wednesday to commemorate the show’s 10th anniversary (via People), producer Joel Fields recalled a prank that star Matthew Rhys played on his co-star Keri Russell and the show’s writers.
“Joe [Weisberg] and I walked in [the writers’ room] one day and someone had on Matthew and Keri’s pictures – they’d been defaced. There’s a devil on Matthew and a funny mustache on Keri,” Fields said. “And we called the assistants in and we called the staff in and we go, ‘Guys, it’s all good to have fun it’s fine, but this is a professional and respectful place...

Kate Stables has readied a new This Is the Kit album called Careful of Your Keepers. The LP arrives on June 9th via Rough Trade, and as a preview, new single “Inside Outside” is out now.
Careful of Your Keepers is named after the seventh track on the record, which refers to, as Stables put it in a press release, “The fragility of things. Of situations. Of relationships. Of humans. What we do to look after each other and ourselves. The passing of time and what that does to us, and how we live our lives going forward.”
Stables teamed up with her usual band for the LP, as well as Jesse D. Vernon, who arranged a horn quartet. Super Furry Animals’ Gruff Rhys produced the project, and both Stables and Rhys himself spoke excitedly about the collaboration in a statement.
“I’ve always loved the idea of working with him somehow,...

Penn Badgley has effortlessly played serial killer Joe Goldberg in Netflix’s You since 2018. The actor used his psychopathic character to introduce fans to his TikTok and has been making a splash on the platform since then. Badgley recently commented on being the “King of TikTok.”
Penn Badgley had the perfect song for his first TikTok
Badgley has always been notoriously private about his personal life and mostly kept to Twitter and Instagram. However, that changed when he joined TikTok out of the blue in October 2022 and used a viral Taylor Swift song to introduce his fans to his account.
Pulling double duty as Joe Goldberg, Badgley lip-synced to Swift’s ‘Anti-Hero’ in a video that the pop star herself commented on. Later that day, Badgley made a follow-up video responding to a fan who commented, “Screaming, crying, throwing up.” The star responded with “Me too” and posted a video...

HBO's "Perry Mason" is in many ways a collision of modern and classic sensibilities. It's a 1930s-set series that has the pulp and murky ethics of a late-40s noir and carries all the glossy prestige of a 2010s premium cable show. It's no surprise, then, that the vehicle at the center of the law procedural reboot also smashes together the modern and the classic in the form of Mason's (Matthew Rhys) souped-up motorcycle, a Harley Davidson that got some major updates on set despite being nearly a century old.
In an interview with Collider, Rhys gave the inside scoop on the motorcycle, which Mason crashes during a particularly memorable scene in the season 2 premiere in which he's haunted by the memory of a client whose life he didn't save. The actor revealed that the crew of the often painstakingly period-accurate show originally brought a Harley from the era to...

Netflix has renewed You for a fifth and final season and promises fans will receive a satisfying “killer” ending to Joe Goldberg’s story. While Netflix did confirm the charismatic serial killer will return to wrap things up, the streaming service didn’t provide any hints as to what’s in store for Joe.
Sera Gamble, who developed the series with Greg Berlanti and served as showrunner for the first four seasons, will be stepping back from showrunner for the final season.
“As I step back from day-to-day showrunning to focus on new projects, I’m immensely grateful to co-creator and all-around genius Greg Berlanti, Caroline Kepnes, my friends at Berlanti Productions and Alloy Entertainment, and our steadfast partners at Warner Bros and Netflix. Making the show alongside our writers, producers, directors,...
