AMC Networks and Toronto-based Shaftesbury have entered into a new strategic partnership that, through an investment in Shaftesbury, will grant AMC access to the production company’s slate and expand its content and development capabilities in Canada.
The partnership, which builds on AMC and Shaftesbury’s existing production ties, was forged with the intention of growing Shaftesbury’s content slate across genres and creating more opportunities for Canadian creators both in front of and behind the camera. Shaftesbury is known as the studio behind Acorn TV titles such as “Murdoch Mysteries”; Acorn TV is a subsidiary of AMC Networks.
Shaftesbury CEO and chairman Christina Jennings will continue to lead the company’s creative focus and day-to-day operations alongside executive vice president Scott Garvie.

The first Middle East and North Africa edition of the SundanceTV Shorts competition, held in partnership with beIN Media Group and the Doha Film Institute, has received more than 300 submissions from across the Arab world, as the deadline closes today.
The SundanceTV initiative to foster indie filmmaking in the Middle East and North Africa – which follows editions of this competition in Europe and South Africa – has seen the bulk of shorts coming from Qatar, Tunisia, Morocco, Lebanon, and Egypt, with entries also arriving from Yemen, Libya, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Iraq, among other countries.
The Arabic shorts, all under 15 minutes long and with English subtitles, unless English is their spoken language, will be judged by a panel presided by AMC Networks Intl. exec VP programming Harold Gronenthal.

The film will be the first original from AMC U.K. and bow on the British channel on May 4 and on AMC channels internationally later in the year.
