George Westinghouse was born on October 6, 1846 in Central Bridge, New York, USA. He was married to Marguerite Erskine Walker. He died on March 12, 1914 in New York City, New York, USA.
Enlisted at age 17 as a private in a New York cavalry regiment during the US Civil War. The next year he passed a special mechanical examination and was made an officer in the Navy.
Was awarded his first patent at age 19, for a rotary steam engine. He was such a prolific inventor he would average taking out one patent every month and a half for the next 48 years.
