It’s a weekend of well-reviewed indie openings with Bleecker Street’s Out Of Darkness, The Monk And The Gun (from the directors of Lunana: A Yak In The Classroom) and limited openings for The Taste Of Things, Perfect Days (Best International Feature nominated), Anthony Chen’s Drift, Bas Devos’ Here and Ennio by Giuseppe Tornatore, which premiered in Venice in 2021 and is finally getting a U.S. release.
Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days, Japan’s official Oscar submission that nabbed a nom, opened at six locations in New York and LA Wednesday, adding additional cities next week. The film written by Wenders and Takuma Takasaki stars Hirayama, a public toilet cleaner in Tokyo who seems utterly content with his simple life until a series of unexpected encounters reveal more of his unearthed past. Neon had a qualifying run in November.

After posting giant per screen numbers at four theaters last weekend, A24’s Beau Is Afraid jumps to 926 for the distributor’s third outing with Ari Aster. It’s a very different film from his horror favorites Hereditary and Midsommar but one the distributor hopes will cement the director’s place as a modern auteur.
According to one influential fan, it has. Martin Scorsese, at a Q&a after an Imax screening in New York this week, called Aster a “unique and powerful” risk taker and “one of the most extraordinary new voices in World Cinema.”
Beau is scary in parts, like an opening Scorsese described as “the best scene I’ve seen of its kind. Absolutely terrifying.” There’s comedy, animation, a conflation of past, present and future, of reality and fantasy, of guilt, innocence, fear and self-loathing and an ongoing play within the movie. At age 29, Kyle Westphal is an emerging fashion designer with a degree in design from Drexel University, a vast knowledge of fashion history, and work that has been featured on Refinery 29 and Instyle.com.
But there was a time when his parents couldn’t imagine such a bright future for him, back when Kyle was a child of six first diagnosed with autism. At that time, as revealed in the documentary Let Me Be Me, Jenifer and Jeff Westphal struggled with how best to support Kyle, who had gone from being an outgoing toddler to a hypersensitive young boy.

Documentaries about a da Vinci and a dictator, a Pablo Larraín drama with Gael Garcia Bernal, a Donnie Yen martial arts thriller by the late Benny Chan, and Coda — Apple’s record-busting Sundance acquisition — make specialty bows this weekend as the arthouse sector fights through a slow reopening.
“The market is still finding a balance right now,” said Kyle Westphal, theatrical sales manager for Music Box Films (and programming associate for Chicago’s Music Box Theatre). The distributor debuts Larraín’s Ema in 11 theaters in nine markets with plans to expand thereafter — to maybe another 20, but it’s hard to say. “The normal [criteria] like what’s your opening per-screen average right now, those are all upside down,” Westphal tells Deadline.
He said a strong perf by Anthony Bourdain doc Roadrunner (Focus Features) and The Green Knight (A24) “doing as well as it has over the past few weeks, are good signs.
