The last cork has been popped and the final flute of Kirkland Signatures sparkling wine drained down to the last drop. Old Man 2023 has gathered his sash about his withered frame and slunk into the night, clearing the way for cherubic New Year 2024–giggly, chubby and brimming with promise.
Or something. In reality, years don’t flip on and off like a light switch. They smear into each other like paint, until everything is the same weird shade of brownish-purple. But still: we all strive to make each new chapter in the Gregorian filing system a fresh start–a chance to break bad habits and begin good ones.
The traditional way of kickstarting these self-improvement reboots is through the maddeningly self-deceptive ritual of setting New Year’s Resolutions–80% of which are inevitably abandoned by February 1, according to most studies. But hey! A sustainable 20% is still pretty good. And for cineastes,...

Netflix has scored a First Amendment victory against a law firm that advises the rich and powerful throughout the world. On Wednesday, a California federal judge granted the streamer’s motion to strike libels claims made by the law firm of Mossack Fonseca over The Laundromat.
Mossack Fonseca is the Panama City firm that had millions of its client documents exposed back in 2016. The so-called “Panama Papers” shed light on international off-shore tax maneuvering, and many investigative journalists followed with exposes. Scott Z. Burns, writer-director of “The Report” and writer-producer of Steven Soderbergh’s “The Laundromat,” built his career with the Oscar-winning filmmaker. They’ve now collaborated on five films, with these last two tackling the Panama Papers and torture reform via screwball comedy and a CIA procedural, respectively. If that seems a little schizophrenic, it’s only because most of us don’t have a history of working with Soderbergh.
“That’s the price of admission for me if I want to come back,” said Burns. “I come back with something new.”
The approaches to Netflix’s “The Laundromat” and Amazon’s “The Report,” a deep dive into Dan Jones’ massive and controversial 2012 Senate Intelligence Committee report on CIA torture, seem very different. However, both rely on Burns’ unique capacity for diving into the weeds so that, as he says, “the audience doesn’t have to.”

Netflix has shared a final trailer for director Steven Soderbergh’s latest film project The Laundromat. The movie has an incredible cast that includes Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman, Antonio Banderas, Sharon Stone, Robert Patrick, David Schwimmer, and Jeffrey Wright.
The film is a satire that uncovers a global conspiracy involving the elite and how they keep the power and money that they have acquired. It’s based on Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jake Bernstein‘s nonfiction book, Secrecy World: Inside the Panama Papers Investigation of Illicit Money Networks and the Global Elite.
The film tells the story of a widow (Streep) as she investigates insurance fraud, “chasing leads to a pair of Panama City law partners (Oldman and Banderas) exploiting the world’s financial system.”

Steven Soderbergh has crafted a sharp and funny tale about rapacious greed and the exploitation of the working class — it’s called “High Flying Bird,” and you should check it out on Netflix if you haven’t already. Also coming to Netflix is Soderbergh’s second feature of 2019, “The Laundromat,” and it’s a well-intentioned hot mess.
Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns (the “Contagion” writer adapts Jake Bernstein’s non-fiction book “Secrecy World”) attempt to follow the “Big Short” playbook of taking complicated financial concepts and breaking them down for a mainstream audience, complete with actors talking to the camera. For all their good intentions, though, “The Laundromat” flails about, with an excess of bad ideas that undercut the justifiable outrage over the events depicted.
A reminder: In 2016, a whistleblower released more than 11 million documents from the law firm Mossack Fonseca, detailing the labyrinth of shell companies and holding...

Remember when Steven Soderbergh retired from moviemaking? There was a brief moment when the 56-year-old writer-director declared he was done trying to jam his square-peg projects into a one-size-fits-all landscape. The guy who helped kickstart the Sundance Revolution, who reinvented himself via a meta-masterpiece (we’re talking about Schizopolis and yes, we’re willing to die on this hill) and reinvigorated George Clooney’s career, who’s made movies starring Julia Roberts and a KFC employee from West Virginia (respectively), and made us take Channing Tatum seriously — he was happy to go paint.

Frontrunners are already forming in the Oscar race for Best Adapted Screenplay, according to early combined predictions at Gold Derby. While most films in contention have not yet been released, many were seen by film critics and industry insiders at the recent Toronto, Telluride and Venice Film Festivals. Hopping into the top 10 for the first time is “Toy Story 4” while “Downton Abbey” drops out. We’ve confirmed category placements with studios or campaigners, but — as awards season veterans know — such labels can change later.
Here are the current top 10 adapted screenplay picks according to racetrack odds based upon our users’ predictions as of Sept. 17:
1. “The Irishman” (opens Nov. 1): Oscar fave Steve Zaillian, who previously worked with director Martin Scorsese on 2002’s “Gangs of New York,” based his script on Charles Brandt‘s book, “I Heard You Paint Houses,” about Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro), a mob hitman with...

Steven Soderbergh’s “The Laundromat” is a fluky contradiction that works. I’m tempted to call it a brain-teaser — not because it’s some sort of clockwork mystery caper that toys with your expectations, but because it’s a true-life journalistic drama about the new world order of offshore financial corruption, and it’s a movie you’ve got to put on your thinking cap to watch. But then, Soderbergh knows how to make using your head fun.
Made for Netflix, “The Laundromat” flashes by in a brisk and buoyant 90 minutes, but it’s about something that can seem, at times, ludicrously complicated: the scandal of the Panama Papers, which revealed, with a detail that hadn’t been reported in the mainstream media, the staggering network of shell companies, many located on tropical islands, in which the global financial elite conceal their assets to avoid paying taxes, or just to stash the funds,...

Steven Soderbergh excels at exploring the complex systems governing modern society with a delicious ironic tone. With “The Laundromat,” that tendency reaches a grandiloquent extreme. The director’s funny, searing look at the Panama Papers scandal unleashes a cavalcade of goofy fourth-wall-breaking explanations about shell companies, corporate tax laws, and offshore accounts. It has a gun-toting Meryl Streep shooting up a fraudulent insurance company, primitive cavemen to explore the origins of supply and demand, and a cameo by Will Forte as “Doomed Gringo #1.” There’s no telling where this movie will go in its quest to shake up a dense subject.
Needless to say, “The Laundromat” stuffs a lot of information into 95 minutes. The slapdash narrative doesn’t always click, and some of the devices are so on-the-nose one can practically hear Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns cackling at their cleverness. At the same time, , so that even the...

Benicio Del Toro in Traffic, Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich, Michael Douglas in Behind the Candelabra–Steven Soderbergh has directed a great many stars to career peaks and the statuettes that follow. While Meryl Streep is probably the last person in need of help with such things, her first collaboration with the shape-shifting pioneer of American independent cinema can’t help but stand out amongst her illustrious career. A new entry into the financial satire sub-genre of Soderbergh’s filmmaking, his new movie The Laundromat is an air-tight, tumultuous info-graph about our rotten to the core financial systems and, in particular, the 2016 Mossack and Fonseca leak, when millions of the Panamanian law firm’s files were anonymously leaked to the press.

Steven Soderbergh, Meryl Streep and Gary Oldman took to the dais this afternoon at the Venice Film Festival to talk with the press about The Laundromat. The film is a dark comedy that centers on the uncovering of the Panama Papers. Streep is a widow who investigates an insurance fraud which leads to Panama City law partners, Mossack & Fonseca, who are exploiting the world’s financial system by creating hundreds of thousands of shell companies to help the wealthy avoid paying taxes. The Netflix title is presented in a sort of anthology form that’s linked throughout by Oldman’s Jürgen Mossack and his partner Ramón Fonseca (Antonio Banderas).

“The Laundromat” is the story of a terrible joke “that’s being played on all of us,” Meryl Streep, one of the film’s stars, said Sunday.
Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the Netflix movie takes a blackly comic look at the investigation into the Panama Papers, a trove of documents that were leaked to journalists in 2016 and that revealed global schemes set up by a Panamanian law firm to help companies and rich clients around the world avoid billions of dollars in taxes. Streep plays a middle-class woman who is cheated of money she’s owed and starts asking uncomfortable questions.
Although the approach is humorous in many ways, the subject matter is deadly serious, both Soderbergh and Streep said Sunday in Venice, where the Netflix film is having its world premiere. “This is an entertaining, flash, funny way of telling a very, very dark, black-hearted joke, a joke that...

There aren’t a lot of things Hollywood loves more in a film than the retelling of true-to-life events or the on-screen portrayal of the real life of a complicated or inspiring person. Steven Soderbergh is a festival favorite, having won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1989 for “Sex, Lies, and Videotape.” The director’s “The Laundromat” debuts at the Venice fest Sept. 1, plays Toronto, then opens in theaters before being streamed by Netflix. Starring Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas, the fact-driven film — based on Jake Bernstein’s nonfiction book “Secrecy World” — centers on the Panama Papers and legal scheming to avoid financial responsibilities (such as paying billions of dollars in taxes). As Streep’s character says, it’s a tale of “massive, pervasive corruption.” And, by the way, it’s a comedy.

Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas look like they’re having a blast in the first trailer for “The Laundromat,” living the high life while Oldman puts on a thick accent that makes him sound like Lawrence Welk.
But who said he could have this much fun? “The Laundromat” is Steven Soderbergh’s story of the Panama Papers, a massive conspiracy of the uber-wealthy that involved money laundering, bribery, extortion … you name it. But Soderbergh has taken the route of his screwball comedies like “The Informant! instead, making the Panama Papers story into a lavish farce.

Netflix has debuted the trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s “The Laundromat,” a dark comedy starring Meryl Streep.
An adaptation of Jake Bernstein’s non-fiction book “Secrecy World,” “The Laundromat” follows a group of journalists who uncover the illicit money networks at the heart of the Panama Papers — documents that exposed a huge international system of legal swindling. Companies had been setting up offshore shell companies that allowed them to avoid paying billions in taxes, and the biggest victims, of course, are ordinary citizens with low incomes.

Frontrunners are already forming for the adapted screenplay race, according to early combined predictions at Gold Derby. While most films in contention have not yet been released, enough teaser trailers are out there, ranging from “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” and “The Irishman” to “Little Women” and “Ford v Ferrari” to provide some sense of what at least feels like a worthy contender. We’ve confirmed category placements with studios or campaigners, but — as awards season veterans know — such labels can change later. And once the fall film fests commence, the standings will likely rapidly shift.
Here are the current top 10 adapted screenplay picks on the Gold Derby site, in order, as of Aug. 21:
1. “The Irishman”: Oscar fave Steve Zaillian, who previously worked with director Martin Scorsese on 2002’s “Gangs of New York,” based his script on Charles Brandt’s book, “I Heard You Paint Houses,” about...

The Venice Film Festival has embraced Netflix movies in its 2019 lineup, despite fierce criticism from local and European cinema bodies unhappy about the presence of the streaming giant on the Lido.
Netflix movies set to debut at Venice in main competition this year include Steven Soderbergh’s Panama Papers pic The Laundromat and Noah Baumbach’s Scarlett Johansson starrer Marriage Story, while David Michod’s The King, starring Timothée Chalamet, will debut out of competition. Amazon will be represented out of competition by Kristen Stewart pic Seberg.
The International Union of Cinemas (Unic), which reps cinema operators in 38 territories in Europe, immediately criticized Venice’s decision, stating this morning, “The inclusion of films in official selections that are within the reach of everyone – and not only that of streaming platform subscribers – benefits the audience as a whole. Where films are available solely on these platforms, or receive only a limited ‘technical’ release in cinemas,...

I’m a big fan of Robert Patrick, who is best know for his roles in Terminator 2 and The X-Files, so it’s great to see him join Steven Soderbergh’s new film project The Laundromat.
Patrick joins an already impressive cast that includes Gary Oldman, Meryl Streep, Antonio Banderas, David Schwimmer and Will Forte.
The story centers around one of the largest money laundering schemes ever. “The Panama Papers refers to the documents that linked money laundering to politicians and powerful higher-ups such as U.S. President Donald Trump. The documents came to light due to a whistleblower with knowledge of the Mossack Fonseca law firm.”
Schwimmer will take on the role of Matthew Quirk, an attorney who speaks on behalf of one of the insurance companies after 20 elderly passengers die on a boating excursion. “The boating company learned its insurance isn’t the large company it thought it was,...

Red Sparrow’s Matthias Schoenaerts has joined the star-studded cast list on Steven Soderbergh’s Panama Papers feature, The Laundromat.
Also joining the cast as filming kicked off this week was Jeffrey Wright, Chris Parnell, James Cromwell and Melissa Rauch. It was already confirmed earlier in the year that Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman, Antonio Banderas, David Schwimmer and Will Forte had signed up for the Netflix feature. Riley Keough has dropped out of the project due to scheduling conflicts.
Who each of the A-list cast will play remains a little sketchy but we do know that David Schwimmer will play an attorney in the film. Cromwell will play Meryl Streep’s husband, with Rauch coming along as their daughter.
The film is based on the book by Jake Bernstein titled Secrecy World: Inside the Panama Papers Investigation of Illicit Money Networks and the Global Elite. It has a screenplay by...

Steven Soderbergh crime drama The Laundromat heads to Netflix, featuring a stacked cast.
Steven Soderbergh’s next film, The Laundromat, is headed to Netflix. However, don’t expect the film to be lacking in high-profile headliners, since it will star Meryl Streep, who plays a middle-class woman bilked out of her money by financial fraudsters Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas, joined by several other notables.
The Laundromat is based on Jake Bernstein’s book Secrecy World: Inside the Panama Papers Investigation of Illicit Money Networks and the Global Elite, which chronicled the international money laundering scheme revealed in the Panama Papers. Soderbergh directed the film off a screenplay by repertory collaborator Scott Z. Burns.
The film heads into its October streaming premiere amidst controversy, with its depicted subjects, Jürgen Mossack and Ramón Fonseca, having filed a libel lawsuit on October 15 against Netflix for the way they were depicted.

Surprise, surprise: famous people and big companies have an interest in the latest Steven Soderbergh picture. The Hollywood Reporter reports from Hollywood that his Panama Papers movie, The Laundromat, has secured Meryl Streep as “the emotional throughline,” which could mean literally anything depending on the source’s perspective — per Deadline, possibly “an anonymous whistleblower” — while Antonio Banderas and Gary Oldman have been engaged in early talks. Juicing up this project a bit more, though evidence you might not see this in a movie theater, is word that Netflix has taken active interest in production.
Said project comes from a script by Scott Z. Burns and Jake Bernstein’s Secrecy World: Inside the Panama Papers Investigation of Illicit Money Networks and the Global Elite. (Nice work on reading that and extrapolating from it “the laundromat.”) A Soderbergh-ready lesson in how rich and powerful people use riches and power to fuck over those less rich and powerful,...

Netflix previously set a movie on the scandal by German journalists Frederik Obermaier and Bastian Obermayer, who broke the story and wrote the book Panama Papers: Breaking the Story of How the World’s Rich and Powerful Hide Their Money. John Wells is producing that one.
The drama is the story of the revelations of reams of documents leaked from Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca in April by an anonymous whistleblower that...
