Scores of attendees at the 2019 White House Correspondents' Dinner donned a small, yet meaningful accessory to Saturday night's event.
Red, white and black pins reading "#FreeAustinTice" were distributed at the annual dinner by the White House Correspondents' Association and its president, Olivier Knox. The pins, Knox said, were provided by Reporters Sans Frontiers and brought attention to missing journalist Austin Tice. Tice, a freelance journalist, was kidnapped when he traveled to Syria in August 2012.
Thank you @whca and President @OKnox for putting these #FreeAustinTice pins at every seat at tonight’s #Whcd. Austin is the only American journalist ...

The Whca will host its annual dinner Saturday at 9:30 p.m. Et. President Donald Trump will not be attending the dinner for the third year in a row.
American presidents and statesmen biographer, Ron Chernow, will be the featured speaker this year. Chernow wrote the biography of Alexander Hamilton that inspired Lin-Manuel Miranda to write the hit Broadway musical. Chernow’s hosting marks the first time in decades the event has not been hosted by a comedian.
C-span will livestream the event on its website.
“The White House Correspondents’ Association has asked me to make the case for the First Amendment and I am happy to oblige,” Chernow said in a statement. “Freedom of the press is always a timely subject and this seems like the perfect moment to go back to basics.”
Instead of attending the dinner, Trump will host a rally Saturday night.

When Nasa announced earlier this month that it would be conducting its first all-female spacewalk in honor of Women’s History Month, featuring female astronauts Christina Koch and Anne McClain, people were like, “Awesome! Good job, Nasa!” In fact, one might even say, if one were so inclined, that the move was one small step for female astronauts in Nasa, and one giant leap for womankind. (Sorry.)
That enthusiasm was curbed, however, when Nasa said that nope, sorry, it was calling off that whole all-female spacewalk thing. In a statement released on Monday,...

Updated, with SAG-AFTRA reaction: The BBC has requested a White House review of security arrangements at Donald Trump rallies following an incident in El Paso on Monday in which a BBC camera operator was shoved hard enough to capture the president’s attention from the stage.
“President Trump condemns all acts of violence against any individual or group of people – including members of the press,” said White House press secretary Sarah Sanders in a statement this afternoon. “We ask that anyone attending an event do so in a peaceful and respectful manner.”
“You all right?,” Trump can be heard asking reporters at the rally in video below, posted on Twitter today by reporter Jacob Rascon of Houston’s Kprc.
Shouting “f*ck the media,” the Trump supporter at last night’s rally blindsided BBC camera operator Ron Skeans with two hard shoves, Skeans says. In the video, a man wearing a Maga hat,...

There may be a few less laughs at this D.C. dinner party. Earlier this morning, the White House Correspondents' Association announced the speaker for their annual dinner. Before you take a guess, we'll give you a big hint: It's not a comic. As it turns out, biographer Ron Chernow will be the featured speaker at the dinner scheduled for April 27, 2019. "I'm delighted that Ron will share his lively, deeply researched perspectives on American politics and history at the 2019 White House Correspondents' Dinner," president of the Whca Olivier Knox shared in a statement. "As we celebrate the importance of a free and independent news media to the health of the republic, I look forward...

This year’s White House Correspondents’ Association will be no laughing matter. The organization has decided to forgo a comedian as emcee this year – historian Ron Chernow will be the featured speaker.
In a statement released today, the Whca announces Chernow as the featured speaker for the annual dinner on Saturday, April 27, 2019. The statement does not address the absence of a comedian as emcee.
Last year’s dinner was hosted by comedian Michelle Wolf (above).
“I’m delighted that Ron will share his lively, deeply researched perspectives on American politics and history at the 2019 White House Correspondents’ Dinner,” said Olivier Knox, Chief Washington Correspondent for SiriusXM and president of the Whca. “As we celebrate the importance of a free and independent news media to the health of the republic, I look forward to hearing Ron place this unusual moment in the context of American history.”

The 2019 White House Correspondents’ Dinner will be headlined by historian and author Ron Chernow, the White House Correspondents’ Association announced in a press release on Monday.
The move breaks with the historical precedent of the organization to feature a comedian, like Michelle Wolf last year. In the release, Chernow made it clear that the decision to have him was explicitly in order to promote the First Amendment.
“The White House Correspondents’ Association has asked me to make the case for the First Amendment and I am happy to oblige,” Chernow said. “Freedom of the press is always a timely subject and this seems like the perfect moment to go back to basics. My major worry these days is that we Americans will forget who we are as a people and historians should serve as our chief custodians in preserving that rich storehouse of memory.”
Chernow added that while he was no comedian,...

CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta on Monday ripped President Trump as “just a dishonest, deceptive person.”
During a CNN panel discussion in New York, Acosta also dissed White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders: “I wouldn’t put productive and a Sarah Sanders briefing in the same sentence.”
Sanders and reps for Acosta did not immediately respond to request for comment.

The veteran broadcaster lamented the atmosphere at Trump’s campaign rallies.
“If you want to ask me what makes me the most depressed about my job, it’s covering the rallies,” Acosta said. “At rally after rally after rally, having the President of the United States whip people up into a frenzy and attack the press is the most depressing thing that I’ve ever witnessed as a journalist.”

Washington — CNN correspondent Kaitlan Collins was denied access to cover an open press event in the Rose Garden in retaliation for asking President Donald Trump questions earlier in the day, the network said on Wednesday.
“We demand better,” CNN said in a statement.
The network said Collins “was told by deputy chief of staff for communications Bill Shine and press secretary Sarah Sanders that her questions were ‘inappropriate.’ They were not. Just because the White House is uncomfortable with a question regarding the news of the day, doesn’t mean the question isn’t relevant and shouldn’t be asked. This decision to bar a member of the press is retaliatory in nature and not indicative of an open and free press.”
Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Collins “sorted questions and refused to leave, despite being repeatedly asked to do so. Subsequently our staff informed her she was not...

Washington — The Washington publication the Hill said that it will not participate in future White House Correspondents Association dinners unless “major reforms” are made.
The decision to drop out came in the aftermath of Michelle Wolf’s controversial, at-times profane monologue, in which she attacked not just President Donald Trump but administration officials who were in the ballroom, including Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway.
James Finkelstein, the chairman of the Hill, said in a letter to the Whca that Wolf’s jokes “were out of line for an event that is supposed to be fun — and fair.”
“Based on what Americans witnessed on national television at Saturday night’s dinner, a once-fine evening celebrating the strong, free press the Whca speaks of has turned into an angry display and ad-hominem attacks.”
Other journalists also criticized Wolf’s remarks in the immediate aftermath of the dinner,...

A day after comedian Michelle Wolf’s routine at the annual White House Correspondents Awards dinner sparked outrage, Whca president Margaret Talev said the routine was “not in the spirit” of its mission. However, she stopped short of an apology for a performance that many felt crossed the line.
Talev claimed she was responding to member complaints that Wolf’s performance, filled with anger at the current administration and causing an uproar and soul-searching among both sides of the aisle in the fourth estate, did not reflect well on the organization.
“Last night’s program was meant to offer a unifying message about our common commitment to a vigorous and free press while honoring civility, great reporting and scholarship winners, not to divide people,” Talev said. “Unfortunately, the entertainer’s monologue was not in the spirit of that mission.”
