Production on MaXXXine, the sequel to director Ti West‘s films Pearl (watch it Here) and X (watch that one at This Link), wrapped way back in May of 2023, and just last month we heard that it has earned an R rating for strong violence, gore, sexual content, graphic nudity, language and drug use as it heads toward its July 5th theatrical release date. With that date just two months away, last week, USA Today unveiled a new image from the film that dropped Mia Goth into an ’80s party scene:
Not to be outdone, Entertainment Weekly, in their annual Summer Movie Preview, has also dropped a bunch of new pics for the movie, revealing our first looks at Goth’s co-stars, including a very bloody Kevin Bacon, Yellowjackets star (and horror super fan) Sophie Thatcher, and Elizabeth Debicki. The third installment in Ti West’s trilogy, A24 will be releasing X and Pearl follow-up MaXXXine in theaters July 5, and Entertainment Weekly has shared four new images today.
With her past catching up to her, Maxine attempts to make it big as a superstar in mid-80s Hollywood in the upcoming MaXXXine. Check out the brand new images down below.
Trilogy director Ti West tells Entertainment Weekly in their preview piece, “The thing that the other two movies don’t have is that sort of scope. To try to do a big, sprawling Los Angeles ensemble movie is what the movie was, and that’s just a big undertaking. There’s a kind of noir-ish mystery vibe to the movie that’s very fun.”
Mia Goth stars alongside Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, Sophia Thatcher, and Kevin Bacon.

Filmmakers often say that they have to personalize their work. After all, they painstakingly devote at least two years of their lives to bring a film to fruition, but in the case of Tarot co-directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, they turned what would normally be a genre exercise into something from the heart.
Tarot — which serves as the writer-directors’ feature directorial debut — is a supernatural horror film involving a group of college friends who, during a weekend getaway, crack open a cursed deck of tarot cards to learn their ominous horoscopes. The tarot card reading is reluctantly led by Harriet Slater’s Haley, who, like Halberg, is a Minnesota native, and shortly after the friend group returns to their Boston-area university, all hell breaks loose as each individual reading comes true in lethal fashion.
Haley’s sole reason for originally getting into tarot as a child was based on...

“Ted Lasso,” “Yellowjackets,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and Renee Rapp were just a few of the winners from the 35th annual GLAAD Media Awards, held Thursday night at the Beverly Hilton.
It’s the first of two dual ceremonies — the second happens May 11 in New York City — but we’ll go out on a limb and say it’s the best one because it’s first, and in Los Angeles (just kidding). And prior to the awards actually being handed out, the stars were out in force with some absolutely iconic looks for the Red Carpet.
Among them were Sydney Sweeney, Wayne Brady, Chlöe, Jason Sudeikis, Niecy Nash, and that’s barely a sample. Read on and see some of the best outfits and fiercest attitudes from the GLAAD Media Awards 2024.

While fans of the Showtime series Yellowjackets (read our review of season 2 Here) patiently wait to see the bonus episode that’s going to air sometime between the second and third seasons, showrunners Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson, and Jonathan Lisco have let it be known that season 3 – which was, of course, greatly delayed by the strikes that hit the entertainment industry last year – is finally going to start filming in May, aiming for an early 2025 premiere!
Christina Ricci and Juliette Lewis star in Yellowjackets, which is is described as “equal parts survival epic, horror story, and coming-of-age drama.” The story centers on a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the Ontario wilderness. Fans of supernatural cannibal drama Yellowjackets are facing a long wait for season 3 which won’t grace our screens until 2025 now.
In 2023, Hollywood came to a standstill for several months while writers and actors went on strike for better terms and conditions. The effects of those strikes are still being felt.
Yellowjackets is one of the many shows that faces a long delay in getting a new season out. Showtime’s drama aired its second season earlier in 2023, which ended on a pretty shocking note – you’ll have to watch the series to find out exactly what that note was.
Deadline now reports that Yellowjackets season 3 is looking at a 2025 release. The pre-production of the new season was interrupted by the writers’ strike just one day in, and writing only got back underway in September 2023.
The series follows a girls football team that find themselves stranded in the woods after a plane crash.

The third season of Yellowjackets will not be premiering until 2025, Yellowjackets executive producers Ashley Lyle, Jonathan Lisco and Bart Nickerson told Deadline on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards on Monday night.
Following the writers and actors strikes that delayed production for most scripted series, the writers room for the Showtime psychological thriller reopened in September. Pre-production for the series was shut down just one day after the WGA strike began last May.

As Yellowjackets season two viewers now know, Juliette Lewis’ character met a tragic ending.
In the shocking May 2023 finale of the hit Showtime series, adult Natalie (Lewis) was — spoiler alert! — accidentally killed by Misty (Christina Ricci) during a wilderness reunion gone wrong between the adult survivors of the soccer team’s 1996 plane crash.
Lewis, who has remained relatively quiet about her arc since the finale released, reflected on exiting the series at the 2023 Emmys — though she left the door slightly ajar to return for season three.
“I thought they wrapped up the characters really beautifully, and I just love good writing, so I was happy to be a part of it,” she told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet. “And I’ll miss my cast. Such a good group of girls, I love them so much. They’re going to do amazing.”

While the industry as a whole felt more downs than ups this year, horror films continued to be a consistent attraction overall. While the studio hits were not quite as splashy as they were 2022, the year saw the birth of new franchises (M3GAN, The Pope’s Exorcist, Talk to Me, Thanksgiving), the revitalization of the reliable favorites (Evil Dead Rise, Insidious: The Red Door, The Nun II), and reminded us just how essential writers, actors, and the all the creatives both in front of the camera and behind it are to making any of this not only work, but sell.
As for the big horror trend this year, controversy was thy name. While there were a few entries critics and audiences were able to rally around, most of them drew conflicting opinions — which this list is surely proof of.
Skinamarink, The Outwaters, Cocaine Bear, Beau is Afraid, A Knock at the Cabin,...

The Yellowjackets will probably be literally hungry for quite some time, but the people who play them may not be for much longer, figuratively. After being overlooked twice in a row, “Yellowjackets” is predicted to cook up its first drama ensemble nomination at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, according to our combined odds, in which it currently sits in fifth place.
Unlike the last two times it was eligible — for the first seven episodes of its debut season at the 2022 awards and for the final three at the 2023 awards — the Showtime hit is now competing for a full season as all nine episodes of its second installment aired during the current calendar year. Not just that, as a two-time Best Drama Series Emmy nominee, it’s now an established awards player than could benefit from SAG-AFTRA voters trying to play catch-up, as they have done with many buzzy titles in...

There are a lot of Stephen King adaptations out in the world; some are fantastic, others are… not so great. One that lands in the not-so-great category is The Langoliers, the 1995 miniseries based on the novella by Stephen King. However, just because one adaptation failed doesn’t mean somebody can’t try again, and The Boogeyman director Rob Savage has previously expressed a desire to tackle a remake of The Langoliers.

While speaking with ComicBook.com, Rob Savage said that while the issue of the rights are still being dealt with, he thinks there’s a “good shot” he’s able to bring The Langoliers to life.
“There’s a bit of naughtiness when it comes to the rights, but I think hopefully we’ll be able to sort it out,” Savage said. “We’ve got such a great idea for developing that one out from the short story.

“There’s a bit of naughtiness when it comes to the rights, but I think hopefully we’ll be able to sort it out,” Savage said. “We’ve got such a great idea for developing that one out from the short story.

The Boogeyman still stands as one of my favorite horror films of the year. It’s a classic tale anchored by some phenomenal performances from both Sophie Thatcher and Vivien Blair. But it’s really the technical side that impresses the most, with its interesting usage of light and fantastic cinematography. So I couldn’t have been more grateful to pick director Rob Savage’s brain about all things Boogeyman. He couldn’t have been nicer, giving great insight into some of the best scenes of the movie. We talked about the possibility of a sequel (and who I want to see get their comeuppance), as well as Disney’s refusal of the usage of a toy lightsaber ended up being a blessing in disguise. This was a great chat that you won’t want to miss!

The new horror film The Boogeyman does something very unusual as compared to other recent horror movies. It places importance on both the characters in the film and the tropey jumpscares, which is why I think it is highly engaging and connects very deeply because of the well-written characters. This does not mean that it’s completely devoid of genre conventions. On the contrary, it is totally a conventional movie, and you might see the twist coming, yet there is something very tender about the film that has been wonderfully brought forward by the performances. The story revolves around the Harper family, which was grieving their mother’s death.
Will Harper lost his wife and now has to look after the two children. Sadie, the elder daughter, was growing distant from Will, and Sawyer, the younger one, was just too young, but she too missed her mother. She constantly reminded Will of this feeling,...

(Above, Karyn Kusama with Courtney Eaton and Samantha Hanratty of “Yellowjackets” at Variety’s TV Fest in June.)
Somehow, Season 2 of Showtime’s hit drama “Yellowjackets” managed to keep its sense of humor, even as the series’ story got darker and, yes, it finally went full cannibal. It’s all about balancing the tone, which is something executive producer Karyn Kusama helped set last season as director of the show’s pilot.
Kusama tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast that the “Yellowjackets” balance of shock and guffaw comes out of the visions of executive producers/showrunners Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson and Jonathan Lisco. “They’ve always understood a tone that I really love myself, which is a kind of adrenalized intense experience that sometimes makes you feel like you need to laugh because you’re so nervous.”

Here's some good news for horror fans who still embrace physical media: "The Boogeyman" is getting a Blu-ray release. The Stephen King adaptation is headed home, and soon, arriving on both digital and Blu-ray in the weeks ahead. The spooky film follows a family going through a hard time in the wake of a death. Their grief compounds itself through their shared trauma, but grief isn't the only thing they have to worry about. There's a supernatural entity lurking in the shadows, waiting to pounce on poor, helpless people who are wracked with grief. It feeds on misery and suffering — the worse off the potential victims are, the more danger they're in. Or something like that — it's all deliberately vague to help keep things mysterious and creepy.
As a physical media fan, I'm glad the folks at Disney are giving this a disc release. "Barbarian," an excellent Disney horror film from last year,...

The 2023 Emmy nominations are here. The slate of nominees include "Succession" (which aired its final season this spring), "Ted Lasso" (which also just wrapped up its last season), "Yellowjackets," and many more. And while there are some long-deserved Emmy nominations we're very excited about, there are also a lot of nominations that didn't happen, leaving viewers and fans surprised at these major misses. Ahead, these are the biggest snubs of the 2023 Emmy nominations.
Emmys Snub: The Cast of "House of the Dragon"
"House of the Dragon," the "Game of Thrones" prequel series that won fans' hearts last fall, was nominated for nine awards. None of them were for acting, despite a very strong ensemble. Most egregious in our eyes is the exclusion of Emma D'Arcy's leading performance as Rhaenyra Targaryen. D'Arcy's portrayal of the heir in an impossible position is full of nuance, pain, and tenderness. And if...

Showtime’s “Yellowjackets” has officially submitted 18 actors for Emmys consideration, and as part of the show’s campaign, the network has released several FYC posters for each character.

The latest to join the cast of upcoming sci-fi/horror Companion for New Line Cinema is Rupert Friend, Deadline reports today.
Friend joins previously announced cast members Sophie Thatcher, Harvey Guillén (“What We Do in the Shadows”), Lukas Gage (“You”), Megan Suri (It Lives Inside), and Jack Quaid (Scream, “The Boys”).
Announced back in February, Barbarian director Zach Cregger is producing Companion for New Line Cinema. Described as a sci-fi/horror movie, Companion will mark the directorial debut of Drew Hancock, who also wrote the script.
At this time, plot details remain under wraps.
Rupert Friend most recently starred in William Brent Bell’s 2021 horror movie Separation, pictured above, as Jeff, the single father struggling to piece together a new life for daughter Jenny (Violet McGraw) when the puppets from his comics seem to take on a life of their own. Rupert Friend, currently on screens in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, has joined Sophie Thatcher in Companion, the sci-fi thriller from the team behind last year’s horror hit Barbarian.
The New Line feature begins production this month and has been filling out its call sheet at breakneck speed. Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri and Harvey Guillén all have signed on in recent weeks.
Drew Hancock wrote the original script and is making his directorial debut with the feature, the many plot points of which are being kept hush-hush. It is, however, being described as self-contained, and Thatcher is set to play a character who is more than meets the eye.
Friend’s character information is being kept in the dark, but suffice it to say the actor won’t be living up to his last name.
Zach Cregger will produce the feature along with Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures.

A version of this story about Juliette Lewis and “Yellowjackets” first ran in the Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Every time Juliette Lewis finishes a project, she is reminded of Dorothy waking up from her dream in “The Wizard of Oz” and trying to explain the profound experience she just went through. “You have this magical journey. I always think of, ‘And the Tin Man was there and Toto and the lion!’” Lewis said, paraphrasing Dorothy. Waking up from her “Yellowjackets” dream at the end of Season 2 was particularly emotional. “The crew, our A.D. department, that cast — you could be weeping about it,” she said. (Spoilers ahead!)
For two seasons on Showtime’s addictive thriller, Lewis’ Natalie Scatorccio wore her trauma on her sleeve, grappling with survivor’s guilt and memories of the horror she and her soccer teammates lived through as teenagers stranded in the wilderness.

Last year’s breakout hit “Yellowjackets” swarmed awards season with seven Emmy nominations including Best Drama Series in 2022. The Showtime drama is looking to outperform those numbers this year by submitting 18 actors for consideration from its Season 2 cast. The Emmy ballots were officially unveiled on the Television Academy’s website on June 15, the same day nominations-round voting began (it will conclude on June 26 at 10:00 p.m.).

Sophie Thatcher, one of the breakouts from Showtime sensation Yellowjackets, has nabbed the titular role in Companion, the sci-fi thriller from the team behind last year’s horror hit Barbarian.
The project has been casting up ahead of a hoped-for summer start of production and has Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri and Harvey Guillén on the call sheet.
Drew Hancock wrote the original script and is making his directorial debut with the feature, the many plot points of which are being kept hush-hush. It is, however, being described as self-contained, and Thatcher is set to play a character who is more than meets the eye.
The feature is being produced by Zach Cregger, the filmmaker who made the twist-filled, pulse-rushing Barbarian, and his Barbarian companions Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures and Roy Lee of Vertigo.
BoulderLight’s Tracy Rosenblum and Vertigo’s Andrew Childs will executive produce.

“Yellowjackets” has served as a great career boost for actresses like Sophie Thatcher, who landed the lead in this year’s “The Boogeyman,” thanks to the hit series. The older actors, including Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis and Tawny Cypress, come to the hit Showtime series with their own rich filmography.
If you haven’t already seen some of their best, most macabre and mysterious movies like “Heavenly Creatures” and “Sleepy Hollow,” here’s a great place to start for your “Yellowjackets”-adjacent viewing.

Jasmin Savoy Brown in “Scream VI” (2023)
Brown, who plays Teen Taissa, has a bigger role as Mindy Meeks-Martin in this sequel to 2022’s “Scream.

"Yellowjackets" was renewed for season three before the second season even premiered this spring, promising fans more chaos, cults, and cannibalism. Showtime confirmed season three in December 2022. The show's creators, Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, have planned for the story of the ill-fated New Jersey soccer champs to be told over the course of five seasons, so the next season will put the story over the halfway mark.
But when the third season will finally air is, unfortunately, a huge unknown thanks to the ongoing writers' strike. Back in March, Lyle and Nickerson told The Hollywood Reporter that they were trying to start writing the new season before the strike began. "The possibility of the strike is very real. All we can do is keep moving forward until we have to put our pencils down," Lyle said. She added that the writers' room would begin officially meeting in April.

Step into the shadows in The Boogeyman (2023), a spine-tingling horror film based on the short story by the legendary Stephen King. Directed by Rob Savage and written by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman, this film takes audiences on a chilling journey that explores the depths of fear and the resilience of the human spirit.
The Boogeyman follows troubled high school student Sadie Harper, and her precocious younger sister, Sawyer, still grappling with the recent loss of their mother. Their father, Will, a therapist dealing with his own intense pain, provides little comfort and closes himself off to the girls emotionally. Little do they know that their lives are about to take a sinister turn when a desperate patient seeking help unwittingly unleashes a terrifying supernatural entity that just so happens to prey on families and feed on their suffering. Talk about unlucky.

The following contains major spoilers for The Boogeyman (2023).
Early Stephen King short stories have a particular kind of grit. Often called Vintage King, the twenty dark tales in the author’s first collection, Night Shift, vary wildly in subject matter and tone but nearly all convey a distinct nihilism and end with a shocking stinger or devastating twist. When adapting these nasty nightmares for the big screen, many directors amplify the unapologetic cruelty while others take the edge off of bleak endings by adding a more uplifting tone or reversing the cynical message with an outright happy ending.
Rob Savage’s 2023 adaptation of “The Boogeyman” falls somewhere in between. Working from a script co-written by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman, Savage maintains the story’s morbid tone by expanding the mental health element of the narrative, but presents a more hopeful ending by centering the story on the...

As 2022 proved to us over and over again, horror is just about the most reliable thing at the box office right now -- maybe even more than superhero movies in some ways. It's hard to have a flop as big as "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" when budgets are generally much, much lower. But they can't all be huge winners like "Smile" or "M3GAN." To that end, Disney's 20th Century Studios released "The Boogeyman" in theaters this past weekend, and the buzzy Stephen King adaptation had a middling debut amidst a sea of heavy competition. Even so, it would be hard to call this moderate disappointment a loss in any way.
Speaking of superheroes, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" made a staggering $120.5 million in its debut, taking the lion's share of attention from moviegoers over the weekend. With "The Little Mermaid" also in its second weekend, "The Boogeyman" had to settle...
