By the time Garth Brooks name-checked Chris LeDoux in his debut single, 1989’s “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old),” the real-life rodeo champ and balladeer was already a cult star. LeDoux wrote and sang detail-rich songs about the grueling rodeo circuit with a restless spirit and his own hard-won experience. His bronc-riding peers ate it up, buying LeDoux’s homemade tapes from the back of the singer’s truck.

Aaron Watson isn’t changing his tune anytime soon. The West Texas native has been nothing if not persistent in his 20-year climb to country music hit-maker, a fact that began to pay off when 2015’s The Underdog made him the first solo male performer since the dawn of the Nielsen Music Era in 1991 to earn a Number One country album without the help of a major label. Staying the independent course isn’t just practical — for Watson, it’s principle.

Aaron Watson gathers his band on the bus to give a breezy acoustic rendition of his current single “Kiss That Girl Goodbye,” which originally came out in February. Watson’s new album Red Bandana will be released June 21st.
Accompanied by cell phone video that frequently rotates around the Texas native’s tour bus with his live band, the performance has a spontaneous, loose feel. Guitar, banjo and fiddle get to shine in this new version, with some light, pattering percussion keeping time in the background. Stripped down from its original,...

Released four years after Shannon Haley and Ryan Michaels’ wedding, this hot-to-trot single finds the country duo returning to honeymoon levels of passion. Both singers take their own verses before harmonizing together during the chorus, whose rapid-fire rhythm mirrors the rush of a steamy make-out session.

Texas country’s reigning indie underdog Aaron Watson is gearing up to take on the majors again in 2019 with the premiere of his rowdy new single “Kiss That Girl Goodbye,” the first taste of his upcoming LP Red Bandana.
Fresh from releasing a live album and a Christmas album in 2018, Watson is currently prepping Red Bandana, his first collection of new material since 2017’s Vaquero. “Kiss That Girl Goodbye” makes for a foot-on-the-gas intro to the new material, as Watson leads the sing-along vocals over a careening mix of fiddle,...

Eric Church’s soulful “Heart Like a Wheel,” Jillian Jacqueline’s riveting duet with Keith Urban and Aaron Watson’s uplifting “Higher Ground” are among the 10 country and Americana tracks you must hear this week.
Eric Church, “Heart Like a Wheel”
For all its talk about wheels, Eric Church’s newest release from Desperate Man rolls forward at a deliberately relaxed pace. The song’s cruising speed is set by its drumbeat, whose casual swing is reminiscent of old Stax Records. Gospel harmonies, church organ and a cyclical, soul-inspired melody only strengthen those comparisons,...
