“Problemista” has hit a problem with its theatrical release.
Distributor A24 has officially delayed the August 4 premiere of Julio Torres’ film, which debuted at 2023 SXSW. A new release date will be determined later; the news comes after Amazon pushed back Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” and Lionsgate delayed the release of “White Bird.” Deadline first reported on the “Problemista” delay, which IndieWire confirmed.
Deadline first reported that A24 opted to release “Problemista” once the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved so writer/director/actor Torres and co-star Tilda Swinton could be available to do press promoting the indie film. The rollout was slated to begin with a limited release while Torres was doing a press tour with screenings and Q&As. The film will still play at a sold-out Outfest showcase on Saturday in Los Angeles.

Exclusive: In light of the current strikes, A24 is pausing the release of Julio Torres’ Problemista which was set to launch limited on Aug. 4. The new release date will be determined down the road. The studio is doing this to support filmmaker Torres, furthermore these awards-type indie movies need their stars, Tilda Swinton here, available to do press and raise such fare’s profile.
Problemista is the second August release after Lionsgate’s White Bird to move off its opening date; that pic originally scheduled for a limited release on Aug. 18. It’s obvious the SAG-AFTRA strike is having a more immediate upending impact than anticipated. Studios are able to pivot with these movies at the last minute as they do not have long-lead tentpole campaigns with big TV spends.
The movie made its world premiere out of SXSW where it notched 91% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

In the film Problemista, Tilda Swinton played the eccentric art critic who drags the immigrant toy designer Alejandro, played by writer and director Julio Torres, around to archive and catalog her late husband’s artwork, played by RZA. Greta Titelman played the character Celeste.
In an exclusive interview with uInterview at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, Titelman revealed the most ‘Julio Torres’ moment of the movie.
“I guess in a sincere way like how collaborative he is always a very Julio moment,” she said. “He wants to collaborate with all of us. And when he was like, ‘yeah, we’re going to talk through the scene with Tilda,’ and I just went into his office it’s just me and Tilda like sitting there and I was like, ok very casual, cool, calm, that kind of vibe.”

Half of the jokes in “Problemista” fell on deaf ears at the film’s SXSW world premiere, but not because the audience didn’t want to hear them. Rather, the Austin crowd covered up several lines of dialogue with howling laughter seemingly every other time writer-director-star Julio Torres opened his mouth as Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer in New York City doing his best not to get deported back to El Salvador.
Catalina Saavedra, who played Alejandro’s mother, Dolores, pointed out the uproar during the post-screening Q&a. When asked if it felt good to hear the reactions to the film, she joked that she didn’t get anything from it. Speaking in Spanish, she said that American audiences react that way to everything they see.

The show initially premiered in 2019, then went on a pandemic-induced, three-year hiatus before premiering its second season this past September.

Angela Trimbur, Grace Kuhlenschmidt, Greta Titelman, Joe Castle Baker (The Other Two), Larry Owens, Michelle Badillo and Aparna Nancherla have joined the Season 5 cast of HBO’s acclaimed comedy Search Party in recurring roles.
Trimbur, Kuhlenschmidt, Titelman, Castle Baker, Owens and Badilloare will portray Dory’s (Alia Shawkat) “disciples,” who join her in her grand existential pursuit, and Nancherla joins as Tunnel Quinn’s (Jeff Goldblum) head scientist.
Created by Charles Rogers and Sarah-Violet Bliss, Search Party stars Shawkat, John Reynolds, John Early and Meredith Hagner. The first three seasons followed best friends Dory (Shawkat), Drew (Reynolds), Elliott (Early) and Portia (Hagner) through a messy private investigation, semi-accidental murder, absurd cover-up and sensational trial. In Season 4, Dory was held prisoner by her psychotic stalker (Cole Escola), forcing Drew,...

Nikole Beckwith’s “Together Together” has all the trappings of your basic rom-com, but it takes a decidedly nonromantic approach to such timeless material. A hit out of the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the movie stars Ed Helms as a single 40-year-old man named Matt who, out of luck in love, hires Anna (Patti Harrison) as the surrogate to father his child. While Matt is eager to welcome his newborn baby into the world, Anna isn’t so keen on the prospect of pregnancy. Bleecker Street Films releases “Together Together” in theaters April 23. Watch the trailer below.
At the Sundance Film Festival, Beckwith told IndieWire, “A lot of surrogacy movies there’s this dour, sad, ominous thing of, like, ‘I can’t believe I have to give up this baby.’ I think that’s also really connected to the way we view women as ‘women are meant to...

Some of the best TV shows are the ones that are just about impossible to describe. Shows that are wild and weird, pushing the confines of what TV has been and “should” be, TV that proudly plants its freak flag in your face and dares you to question it. For all that — plus the important fact that it’s very, very funny — “Los Espookys” had my full attention from the jump.
The new comedy follows a group of horror enthusiasts who turn their passion into a collaborative profession, taking commissions for spooky events like faking a sea monster sighting or enacting a “basic inheritance scare”. Goth obsessive Renaldo (Bernardo Velasco) leads the charge with his pure devotion to all things creepy; ethereal chocolate fortune heir Andrés (co-creator Julio Torres) dreams big and talks bigger; frank dental assistant Úrsula (Cassandra Ciangherotti) provides the reality checks neither of them will. Whenever their...

Renaldo (Bernardo Velasco), the hero of HBO’s new comedy Los Espookys, is a study in contradictions. He dresses in Goth fashions and is obsessed with horror movies, but his most natural expression is a broad and welcoming smile. He starts up a business with best friends Úrsula (Cassandra Ciangherotti) and Andrés (Julio Torres) to provide creature effects for specific situations — a struggling beach town in need of a sea monster to attract tourists, an aging priest hoping to stage an exorcism to upstage his dashing young colleague — but the...
