In 2017, like a lot of Louis C.K. fans, filmmaker Caroline Suh wasn’t sure what to make of the allegations of sexual misconduct against the comedian that were detailed in a New York Times story. The report included female comics’ accounts of C.K. exposing himself to them, which he admitted to, and led FX, Netflix and C.K.’s management company, 3Arts, to drop him.
“I watched his show religiously,” Suh says. “And when the article came out, I was surprised and honestly thought, ‘Is it really that bad that he should be banished from the scene?’ I didn’t really know how to think about it.”
Nearly six years later, now that C.K. has sold out Madison Square Garden and won two Grammys for his comedy albums, Suh and her co-director, Cara Mones, interrogate questions about sex and power raised by the comic’s downfall and comeback in their new documentary,...

Chris Redd says he doesn’t know who was behind the assault last week that left him with a broken nose and cheek bone — or what their motivation might have been.
But the former “Saturday Night Live” star doesn’t think he was just mugged and is nearly certain a weapon was involved, he told The Daily Beast.
“This man hit me in the face with something metal,” Redd said about the assault that happened last Wednesday night as he was approaching the doors of New York City’s Comedy Cellar. “I thought it was brass knuckles because of the way it cut my nose to the bone.”

Update: Comedian Chris Redd has opened up about the attack outside a New York City comedy club last week that left him bloodied and hospitalized.
“This man hit me in the face with something metal,” Redd says in a new interview with The Daily Beast. “I thought it was brass knuckles because of the way it cut my nose to the bone.”
The attack outside the famed Comedy Cellar occurred on Oct. 26 as Redd was heading inside to perform a show. The unknown assailant quickly approached the former Saturday Night Live cast member and sucker-punched him in the face, then fled the scene.
Redd tells The Daily Beast does not think the incident was an attempted mugging, and that he was less concerned about the pain than the amount of blood flowing from his face..

Former “Saturday Night Live” regular Chris Redd was punched in the face Wednesday night by an unknown assailant outside the Comedy Cellar in Manhattan, TMZ reported on Thursday.
He was then rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was treated and released. Witnesses said police took photos of Chris’s injuries, which included a deep cut on his nose.
The assailant was reportedly wearing a security guard uniform. Noam Dworman, the owner of the club, told TheWrap that none of their employees wear uniforms and that the assailant was “not an employee.”
The suspect fled by the time police arrived on the scene.

In 1978, ACLU executive director Ira Glasser had to explain to the press and to the public the ACLU’s choice to defend the free speech rights of neo-Nazi protestors marching in Skokie, Illinois. Over 40 years later, the new documentary “Mighty Ira” shows Glasser looking back on that choice in the light of similar protests and riots that rocked Charlottesville, Virginia.
“Mighty Ira,” for which TheWrap has the exclusive first look trailer, profiles Glasser and explains how he is one of the unsung champions of civil rights and liberties. As the executive director of the ACLU between 1978-2001, becoming the director in the immediate fallout of the Skokie case, Glasser helped expand the organization from being on the verge of bankruptcy into the civil liberties juggernaut it is today.

Louis C.K.’s first advertised stand-up performance at Manhattan’s Comedy Cellar Monday night drew two protesters, lots of tweets and a fairly lukewarm sorta-review in The New York Times.
Though there was talk that C.K. would return to the Cellar tonight, his name is not listed on the comedy club’s website roster.
“We’ve taken a lot of criticism for surprising people with his unannounced performances,” said Comedy Cellar owner Noam Dworman to The New York Times culture writer Sopan Deb. “I’m afraid now we will be criticized for the opposite.”
C.K.’s two Monday evening sets at the Greenwich Village club were not his first since the sexual harassment allegations that torpedoed his career, but they were the first announced by the comedy club on the sign outside.

Louis C.K. made a surprise appearance at the Comedy Cellar in New York City during the evening of September 30. According to the New York Post, the comedian prompted some audience walkouts. C.K made a similar surprise appearance at the same venue on August 26, which was notable for being his first high profile stand-up gig since admitting to sexual harassment last fall.
“A few women walked out,” a comedy source told Page Six about C.K.’s latest appearance. “He didn’t address [the #MeToo allegations against him]. He was a little arrogant…he made some comment like, ‘I’ve been off for a while, ‘cause everyone needs a break.’”
IndieWire reviewed audio of C.K.’s performance and the reaction at the start of the set was enthusiastic. Audience members could be heard clapping and cheering for the comedian. A source told Gothamist two people walked out of the Comedy Cellar when C.K. appeared.

Noam Dworman, the owner of New York City’s Comedy Cellar, spoke out against Louis C.K.’s surprise comedy set in a new interview with The Huffington Post. C.K. made headlines for appearing at the famous comedy club on August 26. The comedian’s 15-minute set was one of his first public appearances since admitting to sexual misconduct last fall and sparked backlash against the Cellar for providing C.K. with a potential comeback.
“I’m very upset with him because my life has been substantially affected and his life has not, and I’m not sure he’s aware of it,” Dworman said, noting C.K. surprised even him by showing up to the Cellar unannounced that evening. “I’m not sure that he gave it sufficient thought. On the other hand, I think he’s been disconnected from the world and didn’t realize. I am upset.”
Dworman continued by criticizing C.

“SNL” “Weekend Update” host Michael Che is the latest comedian to weigh in on Louis C.K.’s surprise stand-up set.
Che said that the online reaction and outrage over C.K.’s appearance had to do with how important fame and celebrity is to observers.
“omg! Can you believe that guy went on with his life?! Yes Megan. I can.” Che said in an Instagram story Tuesday night. Che then responded to an article written about C.K. and potential #MeToo comebacks, saying that what drives most of the articles he reads on similar subjects is a desire and value of fame.

Louis C.K. made a surprise appearance on August 26 at New York’s Comedy Cellar, and two women who were in the audience for the comedian’s 15-minute set told Vulture it was deeply uncomfortable. The women, one of whom asked to be identified with the initials S.B. and the other who wished to remain anonymous, said it was clear several female audience members were not happy when C.K. took to the Cellar stage unannounced. The performance was C.K.’s first since admitting to sexual misconduct last fall.

How soon is too soon? That’s the question on a lot of people’s minds following Louis C.K.’s surprise appearance at the Comedy Cellar in New York City over the weekend for his first stand-up routine since last November, when he admitted to multiple instances of sexual misconduct.
While some crisis management experts called the Emmy winner’s return to the stage premature, others told TheWrap it was as smooth a re-entry as anyone could have predicted less than a year after a very public disgrace.
“Nine months is not long enough — he came back a little too soon,” Richard Levick, chairman of crisis management firm Levick, told TheWrap. “Even Betty Ford spent more time out of circulation.”
Susan Tellem, a partner with Tellem Grody PR, Inc. in Malibu, California, agreed, telling TheWrap: “While as a crisis manager, I would have said, ‘No, do not do that’ to Louis Ck,...

Back in November Louis C.K. admitted that the sexual allegations lodged against him were true, and faded from the spotlight as many of his shows and future projects were scrapped. Now, for the first time since admitting what happened, C.K. appeared at the Comedy Cellar on Sunday night and did a stand-up performance.

Dworman added that C.K. was “very relaxed” and the sold-out audience of about 115 responded well to his appearance, including an ovation before he even performed.
The Cellar has a tradition of surprise comedy guests, and Dworman said one member of Sunday’s audience called the club Monday to express unhappiness over the lack of notice of C.
