Reese Witherspoon: Actress/producer Reese Witherspoon is developing a movie based on the origin story of the wildly popular Barbie doll. The source material is Robin Gerber's book Barbie and Ruth, revolving around the woman who created the doll as inspiration for her daughter; Witherspoon might star. The project is separate and distinct from a live-action movie based on the doll itself, which is scheduled for release on June 21, 2017; Diablo Cody is writing a new version of that script. [The Tracking Board] Mission: Impossible 6: Christopher McQuarrie has confirmed that he will be returning to direct the sixth installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise. Reese Witherspoon's production company has acquired the rights to Barbie and Ruth: The Story of the World’s Most Famous Doll and the Woman Who Created Her, a book about Barbie creator Ruth Handler written by Robin Gerber. The film is being eyed as a starring vehicle for Witherspoon, who has had a string of mixed efforts recently. This reminds me a bit of another female-centric project: the Jennifer Lawrence biopic Joy, which opens later this month and tells the story of the creator of the Miracle Mop; both sound like they have strong roles for women who start their own empires.
This project shouldn't be confused with the live-action Barbie movie Sony is currently developing. That one, which is being written by Juno scribe Diablo Cody and slated for a 2017 release, is actually going to center on the character of Barbie, not her creator. We'll see which one...

In what has become something of a recurring trend in Hollywood lately, Reese Witherspoon is producing and may star in an origins film documenting the creation of Barbie. Not to be confused with the live-action project in the works over at Sony and Mattel, Witherspoon’s project is to be based on Robin Gerber’s novel, Barbie And Ruth: The Story Of The World’s Most Famous Doll And The Woman Who Created Her.
Production house Bold Films is behind the new feature, according to Screen International, which joins Big Beach’s Monopoly picture and Brett Ratner’s Tetris flick in the growing pile of atypical origins tales. It’s understood the latter of which will be stylized after David Fincher’s excellent The Social Network, documenting the legal fallouts that plagued the creation of the seminal brick-breaker.

They look kind of similar! Anyone could have made that mistake! Reese Witherspoon, Pacific Standard, and Bold Films have reportedly optioned the Robin Gerber biography Barbie and Ruth: The Story of the World’s Most Famous Doll and the Woman Who Created Her. Witherspoon could possibly star as Ruth Handler, creator of the original Barbie. Handler was inspired to make the doll by her daughter Barbara, a seven-foot-tall astronaut/veterinarian/figure skater with a 16-inch waist and a hot-pink plastic mansion. Or so I assume. Guess we'll all have to watch and find out!

The Reese Witherspoon-aissance has had mixed success so far. The actress produced global hit “Gone Girl,” and won an Oscar nomination for the well-received “Wild,” as well as cropping up in “Inherent Vice;” but “The Good Lie” disappeared without a trace, and this summer’s “Hot Pursuit” failed to give her a comedy smash to sit with earlier films like “Legally Blonde” and “Sweet Home Alabama.” Nevertheless, the actress continues to mix work with top auteurs and self-developed projects, and she’s just found a potential doozy in the second category, as The Hollywood Reporter reveal that the actress is developing a movie, through her Pacific Standard company, about Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie. The actress has optioned the 2010 Robin Gerber book “Barbie And Ruth: The Story Of The World’s Most Famous Doll And The Woman Who Created Her,” with Witherspoon likely to both produce and star.
